Is the "interesting-ness" problem worth defining? I feel like I've heard this described before but never given a specific name (that stuck) https://twitter.com/ShaanVP/status/1371972331095126019
#
@ShaanVP
Content creators are happy. But retention doesn't improve. Why not? You have a bad case of The Interesting-ness Problem. When a user opens an app (IG, youtube, TikTok) they need juicy content within 7 seconds (or they bounce) This is the "Interesting-ness" problem.

maybe also called the "cold start" problem
#
[tantek]
Could be applicable to any/all Social Readers for example

what is onboarding?
#
aaronpk
what is onboarding?
#
Loqi
Onboarding refers to the first experience a user has when first installing, logging into, configuring, and using a new site or application https://indieweb.org/onboarding
#
aaronpk
similar
#
[tantek]
that's part of it
#
[tantek]
or rather I feel like that's the first part of it
#
[tantek]
onboarding IMO is the process of installing, the app, "setting it up" etc.
#
[tantek]
the "cold start" / "Interesting-ness" problem is what happens *right after that*
#
aaronpk
hm yeah
#
[tantek]
the "empty screen" problem
#
[tantek]
(lol can you imagine that "problem" with a new email client though? 😂)
#
aaronpk
i mean

Might be worth defining because it does keep coming up in the context of silos. It’s only a problem because silos need eyeballs and engagement for advertisement and data collection.
#
aaronpk
actually now that you mention that, hey.com's is more like part of their onboarding
#
aaronpk
dropbox does this too, where they put some files in your dropbox folder when you first sign up so it isn't entirely empty, but the files are like little tutorials
#
[KevinMarks]
i covered that a bit in my twitter rant too - where they force you to follow famous people on sign up so there is something in your feed

do we have a good integration for emailing out new posts to a mailing list? Feels like a WebSub adjacent thing, but I am seeing a lot fo people wanting out of substack at the moment

we have a few examples but nothing I'd call "good integration": https://indieweb.org/email#IndieWeb_Examples
