sknebel mentioned http://bangbangcon.com/give-a-talk.html and that got me thinking. I've already prepared a 10-min-talk about Website Bloat that I'll hold at work in April. I'm planning to record it and share it on my site too. That could be something to share at bangbangcon, I guess. But you know what would be awesome? A demo of how a n00b can go
#
doosboox
from nothing to a website on their own domain in ten minutes. If I were to attempt that, what methods and tools would you recommend?
#
Loqi
doosboox: it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical, can you take it to #indieweb-dev?
#
doosboox
I'm thinking 1) a free domain from freenom, 2) something like the $3 VPS at ramnode.com, 3) ..., 4) profit!
#
doosboox
that was bound to happen :D

If you're looking at completely new user getting a website running, hosts like Netlify with generous free tiers, very little maintenance overhead, and drag'n'drop deploys might be a simpler option than a cheap VPS?
#
doosboox
[Murray]: quite possibly!
#
doosboox
I have no idea how any of the simple solutions work or which exist :D
#
doosboox
The less technical and fast, the better :) But the idea would be to get something as indieweb-y as possible up within the timeframe
#
[Murray]
yeah I guess IndieWeb-y becomes a little trickier when working with static-site hosts. Far from impossible (plenty of people on here uses SSGs and static sites), but maybe a little added complexity than going the WordPress plugin route

Micro.blog + domain is a pretty simple set up, especially for somebody new.

[kimberlyhirsh] great point! micro.blog + a paid domain could probably be set up in 10 minutes and they'd have sometime usable and sustainable.

kimberlyhirsh++ micro.blog is *way* better than a VPS or SSG for new/less technical people!

this is interesting - if you prompt people to think about accuracy, they're less likely to share partisan lies https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03344-2

HWC Americas is tonight at 6 pm PST! Hope to see many smiling faces there.
#

A small announcement: A few HWC participants have reached out to me saying they feel like they have trouble being heard during HWC Americas. In some cases this led directly to those members quitting their attendance of HWC.
#
maxwelljoslyn
It is perhaps no coincidence all of them ID as female.
#
maxwelljoslyn
We've gotten a lot of growth in regular membership lately. That's to be celebrated, but we also want to be mindful that quieter and less confident members get their chance to be heard.

As long as I keep regularly hosting HWC Americas I'll experiment with our format to try and address this.

TY the correction Tantek. it always gets me.

Final note: I encourage everyone to post discussion topics to HWC Etherpads not only during the session, but also throughout the week. = not having to "compete" for live Zoom airtime just to get help, ask questions. We all <3 websites; geeking out is encouraged, let's just not let every session constitute a random walk through more-talkative participants' personal interests ;)

also I think I might have contributed to that (I got really eager to speak on something and spoke forever). I'll do better to be more conscious of that

Something I want to work on is showing interest by asking questions - sometimes I have a habit of trying to make a connection by stating something related instead of asking a person to expound
#
[scojjac]
Can come off like I'm trying to redirect to myself when that's not at all my intention.

Thanks schmarty scojjac jacky. Just trying to live up to the host role; even as a volunteer if im gonna put that word by my name want to live up to it.
#

RE statements vs questions - questions definitely prove one is paying attention. but don't be afraid to bring up related topics; the way to do that well IMO is to make sure it's respnosive to something specific the person said. pretend you are a keyword scanner XD and try to comment on specific aspects of other person's demo, topic, etc.

lmaoo
#
jacky
I can dod that
#
maxwelljoslyn
I think part of the problem is technological - Zoom (at least our installation) doesn't make it easy to drift in and out of conversatios. furthermore online convos don't offer 'graceful exit' options the way you can, at a an IRL party or conference, excuse yourself to the bathroom or something if you need a break / want to reorient. I've been impressed with Gathertown and I'd like to try an HWC with that platform at some point
#
GWG
Do we want to try breakout rooms on Zoom?
#
jacky
We could! But I think that might require a bit more structure (like if we had a bit more organized)
#
jacky
like in the sense of us needing to possible have topic groups in advance

#
maxwelljoslyn
I'd love to try breakout rooms + topics as an experiment. break out for 20 and reconvene, or sth like that.
#
maxwelljoslyn
GWG if it's possible and not too difficult to add breakout to our Zoom for tonight (not sure how that works) culd you please do so?
#
maxwelljoslyn
Regardless of how topics are chosn, either async, or w/ writing/voting the first 10 minutes of HWC, I feel strongly that doing so increases the convo quality. but it does restrict free wheelingness which would be a shame, don't want to be totally subordinate to structures. we'll see how things play out. lahacker thought it would be cool to have a "submit a topic to HWC" frontend hosted somewhere, or a way to post a topic frm one's own site --
#
maxwelljoslyn
dunno what Etherpad admin work would be needed to accomdate that.
#
sknebel
we're running some events on a workadventure instance, which is a bit like gathertown. the splitting up is difficult for small events at least in my experience

#

oh that would be cool too
#
jacky
I think using the Wiki could be enough for that though
#

the etherpad is relatively low friction (if we update the template, we could also refer to it in the event)

The classic in person HWC is round Robin them loose discussion - maybe we need to formalise that a bit more.
#
lahacker
maxwelljoslyn i don't remember saying that but i like that you heard it! the event page accepts mentions not just for RSVP but comments as well. you can post topic suggestions (note) before the event and you can post topic summaries (note/article) after the event. we could even start "voting" on topics ahead of time by liking the various topic posts and bubbling those up to the event page.
