So every comment on a post was actually a 1:1 chat between you and that specific commenter? (Signed in with their own domain, they’d only see comments from their domain and your comments in reply to those)
#
[tantek]1
Idea: what if every commenter got their own comments thread that no one else besides you and they could see?
#
[tantek]1
Has anyone seen a site or setup that does this?
#
[tantek]1
It would reduce any “per formative” commenting because it would only be for you & them, not everyone else that might read the post
#
[tantek]1
“performative commenting” - commenting for the primary purpose of other people seeing your comment, besides the author of the post

Instagram does that!

Stories don't have public comments feeds, if you reply to a story it's a private message between the two people

not really, if you reply to a story, it puts it in you dms with that person

Density of users is key for these local reuse networks. My friend runs Freegle and they have more and more competition from Facebook sharing groups, simply because Facebook has the biggest network of people.

(hmm, think my previous message didn't bridge to the main chat... sending again)

[tantek]1: re: reuse platforms, have you looked at Freecycle? That used to be the big one. In the UK we have Freegle, I've had great success with giving away items on that before when I lived in London. Now I live somewhere much smaller, I have less success, but still some.

Is Freecycle no longer a thing in the US? As doubleloop says, it's still actively used in the UK (at least in London). We've also had good success in our friend group with Gumtree, which is mainly "for sale" but often has "free if you pick it up".

unsure, it's been a long time since I've heard even a casual mention of it
