[tantek] FB is not going to build the metaverse, they're going to hype the market, and get VCs to invest in startups that are "VR worlds but not FB!", and then overpay for the most successful one. Part of that may involve building just enough of a bad metaverse to inspire entrepreneurs to build much better ones, hence fodder for the VCs.

j12t I recently got myself a Quest 2, to understand what FB is up to in the metaverse. Some of what they built is done exceedingly well. All the billions invested do show. (Other things are clearly "not ready" but then they didn't say they were)

j12t Worth it? It depends. I bought it for market research reasons, and that was worth it. There are ton of collaborative workspace apps, most of which are useless IMHO. Some novel experiences that are worth it just for the novely. And lots of games (which I have not really spent any time with).

[Ed_Beck] I really have no interest in googles, being prone to migraines, but would participate in virtual events if I could use my monitors in some kind of hybrid setup.

j12t Agree. IMHO the metaverse is undersold as an idea if all we talk about is VR. For me, it's a single "information space" organized along spatial principles, accessible with all devices.

j12t IMHO the geometry of the metaverse needs to be a combination of Euclidian 3D (in local neighborhoods) and globally a graph (like the web, but probably with bidirectional hyperlinks). A single Euclidian space as in Snowcrash or Decentraland has far more downsides than upsides.

[tantek] yeah it's not clear what UI advantage the global surface allocation had, other than an artificially constrained resource (real estate) that could be "sold" to support the "running" of the backbone or standards development etc.

[KevinMarks] a unified co-ordinate system helps with the Earth aspects of it, but doing AR needs a tight local enrivonment mapping, and you don't want to share that for your own indoor spaces
