20+ years ago I was working on my own metaverse project. The design inspiration was MUCKs, and the idea was that it’d be built in terms of RDF metadata sent over XMPP or the like, with all actions being in terms of high-level verbs instead of low-level position data updates, and I wanted it to also support, say, text-only clients, or different graphical frontends. But I spent so much time focused on the 3D renderer and never got very f

on making the actual network part.

I did built a prototype networking server but it was basically a standard MUCK only using Tcl as the scripting language (since Tcl seemed like the best fit at the time, nowadays I’d probably use Lua)

and then I needed to get an actual, y’know, job
#

I kept the idea in my back pocket for a while but then Second Life happened and that sorta took the wind out of my sails, because not only was there something Close Enough to what I was building, but it showed just how awful what I wanted to build would end up being

Cyberspace/Metaverse was always just a cool sci-fi metaphor for... being online. "How do I convey the experience of being connected to this mass of people/information? How about immersive VR?" The metaphor rooted the experience in a reality readers at the time could understand.

yeah that tweet is about right. Gibson wrote the Sprawl trilogy on non-networked devices. The trilogy, written in the 1980s, basically described cyberspace. He started it on a manual typewriter for the first volume, and IIRC, an Apple ][ for the last.

IMO the 3D rendering aspects of the "metaverse" are kinda the least technically interesting piece, or rather, the piece that gaming companies have already solved many times over. Doom, Unreal engine etc. The network and protocol pieces are the interesting bits, and making the 3D rendering work with a dynamically changing "map", with the data coming & going from a distributed set of sources (instead of "all in one database")

def a site that makes use of badges but like not in a gamification way (more like finding similar kin - could be really just tags)

"But creating a website takes a long time, is a pain to maintain and update, and the real icing on the cake? No one will ever find your website" [...] "new kind of professional social network" - I don't like that site, [jacky]
#
capjamesg[d]
I think it's missing the point of having a website.
#
capjamesg[d]
Mine is a pleasure to maintain and update.
#
capjamesg[d]
And you could reasonably create a website and get it hosted easily even without knowing how to code.
#
[jacky]
Yeah, that's marketing speak there to discourage one from doing so tbh

What is 100 days?
#
Loqi
A 100 days project in the IndieWeb community is a challenge to do or make something and post about it on your own site every day for 100 days https://indieweb.org/100_days

What is broadcast
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "broadcast" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "broadcast is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
Hmm, we’ve talked about it enough in the past week, its up/downsides, various unintended / unexpected consequences, that maybe its worth creating a page about it

This article provides a good long historical context, I feel like it’s the kind of stories that KevinMarks would tell us :) https://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/how-to-fix-social-media
