I wrote a high-level overview of all the important bits someone needs to know when getting their first domain. Thoughts? https://harry.garden/devblog/domain.html

That's a pretty good intro - some TLDs have rules about what can be private, and some have residence requirements (.eu for example)

Good points. I'll add those in.

Tantek, the antimeme idea is related to privacy and audience. How might you post something on your own site (publicly) that you don't mind being seen by a smaller crowd, but if the post were to suddenly be slashdotted or suddenly go viral, what might your site do to put the brakes on the post and artificially stop the spread/distribution?
#
[chrisaldrich]
So maybe the idea of a negative feedback loop that does the opposite of what Facebook's algorithmic feed is doing (and designed for a personal site)? Having your site go down for too much traffic is one low-tech way of doing this on a broader spectrum of options.
#
[chrisaldrich]
[KevinMarks] that fragment I linked was about that very book. Did it have any suggestions about the technical implementation of such a thing beyond the base idea?
#
[chrisaldrich]
Is there a silo-version of a Goodreads for coffee/tea? Or maybe other collector/review sites like https://www.fountainpencompanion.com/ for fountain pens? cc: capjamesg
#
[chrisaldrich]
What is a review?
#
Loqi
A review is a post evaluating a product or service, usually involving a written description, sometimes with summary numerical evaluations, also known as just a rating if it’s just a single numerical value or iconic representation like stars (★★★★☆) https://indieweb.org/review
#
[chrisaldrich]
What is a collection?
#
Loqi
A collection is a type of post that explicitly lists and/or embeds multiple other posts chosen by the author https://indieweb.org/collection
#
[KevinMarks]
No, it was more of an eldritch horror story than a technical one.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Thanks [KevinMarks], that's the impression I got, so it saves the time tracking it down for additional context.

that antimeme idea reminded me of people fighting hotlinking pictures by replacing them

Good evening, I suck at IRC so please be patient. I have two questions...
#
digivonity
1. is this a channel where I can ask general questions about indieweb?
#
digivonity
2. Am I coorect that there is no language attribute in the microformats standard?
#
digivonity
Haha, i found the answer to my first question. I noticed my questions on the indieweb site chat.
#
nekr0z
digivonity: yes and yes
#
digivonity
nekr0z do you know of a reason that there's no language attribute?
#
nekr0z
html already has "lang" attribute that you can use together with mf2, no need to reinvent the bicycles
#
Loqi
hey digivonity, nekr0z, would you mind moving this conversation (Microformats, mf2) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!
#
digivonity
Thanks nekr0z - I understand
#
nekr0z
Loqi: may be right here for a change :)
#
aaronpk
there is a lang attribute in microformats, but yes that topic is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev

I find something very appealing about this user interface as a way to create a website: https://paperwebsite.com/.
#
[chrisaldrich]
A micropub client that could do this would be fascinating...
#
capjamesg[d]
There are quite a few OCR (Optical Character Recognitions) engines out there that let you do similar character recognition,
#
capjamesg[d]
Has anyone played around with them?
#
capjamesg[d]
I tried Tesseract earlier this year but found it was quite hard to configure. But I had never tried character recognition before so that was probably the issue 😂
#
capjamesg[d]
[chrisaldrich] I think that product expands the definition of what it means to create a website. I love it!
#
[chrisaldrich]
It's probably beyond my skillset, but I have to imagine that there are some creative folks who could do photo -> OCR -> micropub pretty easily. Could also be a great way for collecting quotes by screenshotting books or other text.
#
capjamesg[d]
Amazing ideas!
#
[chrisaldrich]
I was also talking to someone earlier this morning about voice-to-text memo apps for note taking. That could be another interesting route as well. Audio recording - > Voice-to-text -> Micropub (likely as a draft) -> some editing, then publish.
#
[tantek]
photo -> OCR is already built-in in iOS15. aaronpk and I were playing with it at btconf and it's pretty amazing
#
[tantek]
alternatively, handwriting to OCR is quite well supported (and fast) on new-ish iPads (past 3-4 years) with the Apple Pencil, e.g. into the Notes app
#
aaronpk
i've been using that feature quite a lot actually! I've been copying text from one screen to another by using the ios camera now 😂
#
[tantek]
is there a Notes app -> Micropub flow that anyone has figured out?
#
aaronpk
need to type a long password on the phone? type it on the computer and copy it using the camera app!
#
[tantek]
I really like the simple plain and undistracting text entry UI of the Notes app
#
aaronpk
Notes to Micropub should work with SHortcuts
#
Loqi
[tantek] aaronpk: we try to keep jargon (Micropub) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
[tantek]
borderline
#
[tantek]
I see "should work with Shortcuts" and I hear the distant sounds of [schmarty]'s recent frustrations with Shortcuts
ranuzz joined the channel
#
capjamesg[d]
I wonder if there is an SDK for apples OCR?
#
capjamesg[d]
Both those words should go on the jargon page.
#
capjamesg[d]
I’ll move to dev.
#
aaronpk
it's a toss-up between hoping that your Shortcuts keep working vs hoping an app developer continues to update their app
#
[tantek]
yeah I feel like we need an updated version of [schmarty]'s keynote from IWS 2019
#
[tantek]
that's the larger picture, and whether Shortcuts are useful in achieving a good mobile reading/posting flow or not
