i need to remember the personal library event with [chrisaldrich] tomorrow, see if i can end up attending or if iโ€™d get too enraptured in reading at that time ๐Ÿ˜„

The tech side I think is covered andysylvester, but we can always use help with eyeballs in chat and on twitter with new folks who may be having issues, problems, or who may need help. It's hard to host and watch everything simultaneously.

[chrisaldrich]: You want me to start the Zoom and such?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
what e-snail said, except my personal library is usually a local coffee shop
#
GWG
[tw2113_Slack_]: I used to go buy a soda and sit somewhere, but I haven't really sat in coffee shops or such in the last 2 years.
#
GWG
It has really impacted my book reading
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
easy to believe, it's been a hell of a 20s
#
GWG
To be honest, lying on my couch is not as satisfying
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
if i was to buy any sort of furniture, it'd be a recliner
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
softer and more comfy than my office chair or bed
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
and a bit more reclined than a couch
#
GWG
[tw2113_Slack_]: Why not buy it?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
trying to be potentially move-ready though we're about to renew another year in our current apartment
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
plus i'll need to save up a bit
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
and not necessarily the space for one here
#
[chrisaldrich]
GWG, certainly feel free to start it if you're up and around early. My plan was to try to get things started about 20-30 minutes early if anyone wants to pop in and chat before we officially start.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Interestingly, I've got the third meeting of a book club just before the pop up.
#
GWG
[chrisaldrich]: I'm 3 hours later than you. I'll be up
#
[chrisaldrich]
We've been using a shared Obsidian Vault for taking notes and interacting. It's been an interesting model for a book club.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Anyone have any interesting topic ideas for tomorrow? Feel free to scribble them into the etherpad to serve as a model for others if you like.
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
has where to purchase items ever come up?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
for example using indiebound.org to find local shops
#
[chrisaldrich]
I think it's come up before, though from the perspective of how to sell things from one's own site (and potentially syndicate). It may have been in chat though and thus not logged. Searching the chat logs might turn up some other ideas.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I know that some have been using services that are not Amazon definitely.
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
just curious. i've been using my book data for a quick vercel/nextjs app to display recently read books and whatnot. and tonight i added links to indiebound.org permalinks for the books
#
[chrisaldrich]
https://bookshop.org/ has an affiliate program that helps to support local shops too
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
just append the ISBN to a permalink to hopefully get the book found there.
#
[chrisaldrich]
What is ISBN?
#
Loqi
ISBN or International Standard Book Number is a unique numeric commercial book identifier that began use in 1970 https://indieweb.org/ISBN
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
i think if i were taking reviews/logging as more serious in terms of trying to promote to others, i'd consider an affiliate
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
just logging for myself...eh no need for affiliates
#
[chrisaldrich]
[tw2113_Slack_] you should add your example use case to that page
#
[chrisaldrich]
I've been thinking off and on about relying more on Open Library in conjunction with my site instead of pushing business to Amazon.
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
hmm. I wouldn't likely add this nextjs app as an example, but would with my books on apiratelifefor.me since I do the same there
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
bookmarked the ISBN page to consider adding later
#
[chrisaldrich]
Rather than pushing for a more traditional build day following tomorrow's pop up, I'm going to suggest that folks interested in building something bookish together show up for the upcoming Create Day: https://events.indieweb.org/2022/03/indieweb-create-day-6noI0mYwJY3S

Never once can I recall a discussion with any Web colleagues about The ROAM Principles. They are a framework for Internet (and #Web) universality and we need them. We're too fragmented and without unity and discourse, we will lose what's left of the idealism and hope born of Web.

I wasnโ€™t aware of those ROAM principles. They do make a useful comparison with the EUโ€™s Digital Rights and Principles (pdf in English https://ec.europa.eu/newsroom/dae/redirection/document/82703) published last month which form the anchor of the full EU geopolitical positioning w.r.t. to digital and data. Goodreads feeds are huge and their markup is nasty enough that you're better off pulling from them as draft so you can clean up the markup before publishing.

Maybe a detail of having another field in a JSON, but marking some books as "featured" would make it possible to pick ones to feature on personal bookshelves vs. the 900 book list dump

Maggie: that's a good idea!
#
tracydurnell[d]
good idea @Maggie - right now I use Goodreads as a longlist of "to read" and manually make a shortlist of books to read next on a "want to read" list on my site
#
tracydurnell[d]
so not manual would be great ๐Ÿ˜‰
#
Maggie
ha, agreed. I end up adding only select books to my public bookshelf both as a way to only mention meaningful books, but also less work with my current rubbish manual process. Being able to add the full lib for discovery/social cross-referencing but also curate a top picks selection is ideal
#
gRegor
I used to keep an "up-next" short list on Goodreads with a handful of books to read soon vs the full want to read
#
[tonz]
I have a long list of books to read (and to track where I have them, paper, kindle, epub, pdfs which device etc. if not Calibre), but over time I select from it based on a running list of topics Iโ€™m currently interested in.
