Great article, though... It's seriously making me rethink running an ActivityPub server for my group. If I do one, though, it will be more than likely Friendica or Pleroma. The latter don't have the weird discrepancies that Mastodon does.

Those URLs are weird. That's the name of the docker instance, and then they've also got tries listed as zero.

Definitely in over my head again.

If anyone has used microblog.pub I'd love help otherwise I'm sure I'll muddle my way to a solution eventually

AshMcAllan[m]: I wonder if microblog.pub needs a HOST variable set somewhere (and since it has none, it uses the default one Docker provides)
#
AshMcAllan[m]
Yeah that makes sense. Just need to figure out where 😅
#
AshMcAllan[m]
That's correctly configured thanks to the setup wizard

This might be my weekend challenge going through and trying to follow the code

[[chrisaldrich]] tantek, I recall a few articles about the shadow site phenomenon a year or so ago. iirc, the general scam also perpetrated by some of the restaurant and delivery services like uber eats, open table, and the like to draw visitors and click through ord...

It's a real thing which I discovered when I was doing the website for a restaurant that used Open Table for reservations.

[[chrisaldrich]] They've set up things which increase their kickback percentages for referring traffic to themselves over traffic that the restaurant may drive themselves. Many restaurants and their developers forget to custom code their referral links properly. Exam...

Google is a prime offender.

This is worth writing up, actually. Maybe I’ll explain the scam (strong word, but that’s how I feel about it) on my little website.

It’s a bit complicated to explain in short irc messages.

I would be very interested.

Ok, in that case, I’ll put it on my todo list. Can’t get to it right away because I broke my website 11ty chain. (Intentionally, in order to make adding images easier.)

what is a shadow site
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "shadow site" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "shadow site is ____", a sentence describing the term)

[tantek]
shadow site is a either a copy of an actual independent web site, setup by a third party hoping to intercept searches for the original site, and insert their own business model (like a food delivery service) that bypasses or charges more than the original site. E.g. https://blog.rankingcoach.com/en/lieferando-makes-shadow-sites-of-listed-restaurants
