Going to do a pop up event.

We have a HWC London / Europe meetup online next Wednesday.

Oh, I missed the pop up thing.

I could maybe join a pop up. When are you thinking?

Quick warning about the background colour on that page. It's very bright and I think it makes it hard to read the content.

[manton]: have you seen https://www.yelp.com/dataset? might be interesting for your project
#
jacky
I could see this being used for other indieweb projects too
#
jacky
it's quite restricted tho
#
jacky
> Currently, the metropolitan areas centered on Montreal, Calgary, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Urbana-Champaign, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Madison, and Cleveland, are included in the dataset.
#
[tantek]
what is Meridian
#
Loqi
Meridian is an open source project to provide a places database and API based on OpenStreetMap https://indieweb.org/Meridian
#
[tantek]
that project ?

yeah!

[tantek]: if you use Reeder for Mac (RSS reader), it lets you subscribe to Twitter accounts and uses Nitter’s rss feed. Means you can rather seamlessly subscribe by just putting in a Twitter username.

#
[tantek]
^ that's a reasonable feature request for any reader, e.g. Monocle (cc: aaronpk). E.g. paste any Twitter URL and have it hardcoded to subscribe via Nitter or Granary
#
aaronpk
yeah i like it

!tell [manton] is there a "How to transition from Twitter to micro.blog" post / help article somewhere? Do you have an in-progress draft that you could finish-up and post today?
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
gRegor
micro.blog imports https://indieweb.org/blog_archive_format, so would be cool to have a tool that took your Twitter export and made it that format.
#
gRegor
I requested my Twitter export to see what that might entail
#
[manton]
[tantek] Thanks! That video is a little out of date, but hopefully still captures the feel of everything even a couple screenshots and details have changed.

#
[manton]
We also used to have an actual “import from Twitter” feature, but I disabled it because it kind of created a mess if someone had 10k tweets. Most people regretted running the import. 🙂
#
[manton]
I know Twitter changed their tweets.zip format at some point in the last couple of years. It does have JSON but is mostly designed to be a standalone mini site that you could host as-is somewhere else or run locally.
#
[tantek]
Interesting, I wonder if that indicates a UX challenge for backfills in general

There's a common misconception that to follow people on Mastodon, you must be "on Mastodon" which is quite false
#
[tantek]
e.g. people have no idea that you can follow people on Mastodon from your micro.blog, so I'm sharing this article a lot: https://www.manton.org/2018/11/07/microblog-mastodon.html
#
[tantek]
oh now I'm curious if I already have an @@ "address" via my micro.blog or if I managed to set that up
[jeremycherfas] and geoffo joined the channel
#
[schmarty]
tantek: you can check from your account settings page. replies from you to mastodon users don't seem to work for non-hosted-at-micro.blog blogs at the moment because there's no 'in-reply-to'
#
[tantek]
[schmarty] I'm not even that far yet, I'm trying to see if Mastodon users can follow an @@ address from micro.blog for me
#
[schmarty]
tantek: for sure. that's where you need to check your account settings page. there's a section for "setting your activitypub name"
#
Loqi
[schmarty]: I don't mean to be a bother, but in-reply-to, ActivityPub seems like a better conversation for #indieweb-dev
#
[schmarty]
maybe, Loqi! maybe!
#
[tantek]
see I was trying!
#
[tantek]
we should be able to discuss this as users without mentioning AP
#
[tantek]
see #indieweb-dev for the AP-specific chat 🙂
#
Loqi
definitely
#
[tantek]
[manton] it says on https://micro.blog/account/mastodon that "Your username cannot be changed later without losing your Mastodon followers." — is that really true? What I mean is, doesn’t micro.blog have the ability to "forward" any requests to an @@micro.blog username to another domain?
#
[schmarty]
whoops non-public URL
#
[tantek]
I'm wondering if there's any downside to setting up @/t @micro.blog and then later trying to change it to @/tantek @tantek.com (ignore the "/" chars, there to stop Slack from over-auto-linking)

That Micro.blog warning is there because currently to rename the ActivityPub username, I have to delete it and create a new one. There may be a way to work around this in the future with new Mastodon features, but not totally sure yet.
#
[tantek]
I'm pretty sure that Mastodon has added migration protocols (in the past year) so it should be possible now
#
[manton]
Yes, I think so… I’m sure I’ll have to keep track of something extra. I don’t think Mastodon even lets you rename a username, but there is support for migrating between servers.
#
[manton]
[tantek] For your first question, yes, you can use the Micro.blog ActivityPub feature and it will forward any of the feeds you have set in Micro.blog to your followers. There are some limitations, though, like it doesn’t know how to handle replies from your own site.
#
[manton]
The change I made recently is to allow any account to have an whatever@micro.blog ActivityPub username. And if your domain is hosted on Micro.blog, it can also be you@yourdomain.com.
#
[tantek]
got it, so I could have @ t @ micro.blog for example today, right now, and people could follow my posts that way
#
[manton]
You could also have a “fake” hosted blog on Micro.blog, like micro.tantek.com or something like that, and then have t@micro.tantek.com. Might get a little weird.
#
[manton]
At that point, Bridgy Fed may be a better choice.
#
[snarfed]
for [tantek] and true power users, maybe yes. otherwise, I generally recommend Bridgy non-Fed
#
[manton]
Bridgy non-Fed needs an existing Mastodon account to forward to, right?
#
[manton]
Cool, just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything… Yeah, I think some people like having a “real” Mastodon account, and some people don’t.

[tantek]
what is real
#
Loqi
How do you define real? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.[1] https://indieweb.org/real
#
ash[m]
Can someone send a u-like-of webmention to any of the posts on acegiak.net from a source other than bridgy so I can see how mb.p is currently handling it?
EncryptedGiraffe and jacky joined the channel
#
ash[m]
Tack!
#
ash[m]
Interestingly that shows up in the current version as a webmention AND a like but then only shows you in the like list with the webmention list empty
#
ash[m]
And then it's also not handling likes and reposts from bridgy as anything other than just webmentions
#
ash[m]
Unless your site is also sending a like via the fediverse?
#
aaronpk
it might be doing that
tbbrown, geoffo and ren joined the channel
#
ash[m]
Ok cool that explains what I'm seeing
#
ash[m]
Ok so the webmentions aren't parsing the microformats markup atm
#

i thought my site would have only tried to send it one way, but i might be wrong about that
