hi! am trying to get into indie web stuff and am kinda struggling a bit maybe? i don't really know what to write about for my website. so far i've just wrote a few posts about making a stat tracker for myself and moving to the indie web, but i'm kinda just struggling with ideas i think. is there a good way to come up with ideas?
#
gRegor
Welcome, [catgirlinspace]. Do you mean you're looking for writing prompts for the blog, or a general "What should I do next on my site?"
#
[catgirlinspace]
probably writing prompts i think.
#
[catgirlinspace]
also, is there a good way to implement other indie web features like short-form notes and outbound webmentions with Eleventy? so far i only have microformats and incoming webmentions with brid.gy
#
gRegor
Writing prompts can always be an issue. :) Really depends on what your interests are. Some people are doing week notes posts to help write more regularly and document life things. Or there's various challenges like 30 days of x, etc.
#
gRegor
what is week note
#
Loqi
A week note is a note post published at the end of the week that summarizes that week’s goals, accomplishments, events, posts, or other week-specific content the author wishes to share, similar to a monthly recap, yet for a week, and typically manually written https://indieweb.org/week_note
#
gRegor
what is 100 days
#
Loqi
A 100 days project in the IndieWeb community is a challenge to do or make something and post about it on your own site every day for 100 days https://indieweb.org/100_days
#
gRegor
(there's a lot on that page, lower down it has other durations)
#
[catgirlinspace]
oh cool, thx for the links!!
#
gRegor
For the indieweb features, that gets more into dev talk, so probably better for our #indieweb-dev channel (#dev in Slack)
#
gRegor
Our friendly chat bot Loqi will respond to "what is" questions with search results from the wiki btw
#
[catgirlinspace]
mhm, i think i saw something about that on the wiki but i kinda just skimmed over it

[catgirlinspace]: i just saw your twitter DM in my spam folder, sorry I missed it before! this post is one part of the answer to your question :) and welcome https://aaronparecki.com/2018/04/20/46/indieweb-reader-my-new-home-on-the-internet

I love the subject of writing prompts, what should I write about, why, when, etc. Ironically I've used that sometimes as itself a writing prompt 😂 and collected some things on the wiki: https://indieweb.org/post#Why

so if it helps at all, you're very much not alone in "don't really know what to write about for my website"
#
[catgirlinspace]
[tantek] thanks! is nice to know that im not alone in this struggle
#
[tantek]
literally every time I open a text editor for my blog
#
[tantek]
(and this is a great subject for this chat)
#
[catgirlinspace]
[aaronpk] it's ok! i kinda forgot about that dm. i've looked into it a bit more since and i think maybe i have a bit better of an idea of how to handle indie web things kinda?
#
[catgirlinspace]
(hopefully that's the right way to do mentions for irc people, idk)
#
[catgirlinspace]
also sorry abt slow responses sometimes. am a bit busy rn
#
aaronpk
glad you found this chat, it's a better way to get a hold of me and many others about these topics :)
#
[catgirlinspace]
mhm, i saw it a while back but irc is kinda scary in a way? im a lot more used to discord. am using slack right now though so it's somewhat familiar.
#
[catgirlinspace]
i guess when i think of irc i think of like, very old text chat and it just kinda scares me a bit in a way.
#
[tantek]
agreed [catgirlinspace], the Slack UI (to me) feels a lot friendly than IRC
#
[tantek]
friendlier*
#
[catgirlinspace]
some of it might also just be that like, im 17. i haven't grown up with anything close to irc lol
#
[tantek]
also, no worries about any response times, we often have major response / convo lag times here of hours or even days to "get back to something". people are pretty chill about it 🙂
#
[tantek]
in a larger sense, there's also this:
#
[tantek]
what is life happens?
#
Loqi
life happens is a summary expression of numerous things that people experience in their actual physical lives that suddenly take higher priority than nearly anything else (like participation in volunteer-based communities), and the IndieWeb community is here to acknowledge, accept, and be supportive of community members experiencing this https://indieweb.org/life_happens
#
[catgirlinspace]
mhm, im kinda just used to discord communities where chat is like, very real-time-y
#
[tantek]
that often happens here too, but in bursts
#
[tantek]
we do have a discord bridge too. I'm curious what the chat here "feels" like to the folks who regularly chat via discord (capjamesg, jacky?)
#
[catgirlinspace]
i saw something on the wiki about the discord bridge being broken

IWDiscordRelay
<capjamesg#4492> The only thing is that every few months the bridge can stop working for a bit.

IWDiscordRelay
<capjamesg#4492> I usually ask the admin via IRC and we can get it fixed relatively quickly.

!tell catgirlinspace you may have already seen it, but there's a page for Eleventy with some examples and tools linked. It's a bit light, but definitely possible to get a few things working 🙂 https://indieweb.org/Eleventy
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

ah nevermind, should have scrolled through in #indieweb-dev 😅

This is an interesting use of rel=me https://www.presscheck.org/
mro, geoffo and tiim joined the channel
#
sknebel
its a bit annoying that they overrode rel=me for that though, since thats not what it means :/
#
sknebel
but of course its what worked to get the effect they wanted...
#
aaronpk
i suppose it's an accurate use of rel=me tho, since each person gets a profile page on presscheck.org
#
sknebel
oh right
#
sknebel
didnt look close enough
#
sknebel
another thing like that had just one page with a list of links
#
sknebel
(also had a list of all people on it ready for download, presented as "you can follow everyone on this list easily by importing it" ... which quickly got turned into "oh hey they offer a blocklist of people who think twitter-style checkmarks are good" :D)
gRegor and mro joined the channel
#
[KevinMarks]
that is a correct use, I saw another one that was linking them all to the org page which is a bad idea. Linking to from institutional user profile pages is a good use.
#
[KevinMarks]
though they're doing the rel-me links to mastodon in the head, and not use rel=me on the profile links, so deduct some points
#
[tantek]
indiewebify.me could give more "points" to visible links in the body rather than invisible links in the head
mro joined the channel
#
[KevinMarks]
that's a good idea, especially as there is a clear explanation for it
#
Loqi
[Scott Kingery] Just realized a bunch of recent site edits I did whiped out the rel=me code in the header. Fixed it. ✅#Verified #Indieweb (https://techlifeweb.com/static/Note-2211222217.html)
