Yeah, just an open-ended excuse to ban anyone he doesn't like and claim it was because of this rule
#
[chrisaldrich]
What is a dictator?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "dictator" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "dictator is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
[chrisaldrich] does it have IndieWeb relevance? Or is there a larger pattern like parallel with Zuck/FB?
#
[chrisaldrich]
I can be the dictator of my own site, and you yours, but there's a major inequality and lack of freedom for people stuck in a silo run as a dictatorship like Twitter now and FB to a lesser extent.
#
[tantek]
not sure it's the right term for that? I mean similar problem with Masto instance admins
#
[tantek]
btw [chrisaldrich] ping/reminder to upload those fab IndieWeb cards / promo images!
#
[chrisaldrich]
Is escaping a dictatorial silo experience a new reason /why Indieweb? We had a freedom sort of framing but we've not seen this sort of silo experience at this scale before beyond silo deaths.
#
[tantek]
there are several I'd love to put up as hero images on a handful of pages
#
[tantek]
we do have account suspensions in the /why page already
#
[chrisaldrich]
I've got most of them in a folder with alt tags written. I'm waiting for good wifi while traveling with the family to do a bulk upload.
#
[tantek]
oooh we also need a gift for today!
#
[chrisaldrich]
I'll try to get them up tonight at the hotel when the family sleeps

I keep forgetting to check on the awesome topics up here... but I have a bit of a pickle, and I figured that you guys might be the best ones to discuss it with. What do I do with my short domain, which I sort of fell in love with, at this point, considering Twitter is dying, so there's really no point in using it on the Fediverse for POSSE, since most admins of most fediverse servers frown upon that, some calling it malicious. I
#
cambridgeport90[
think that a few of us on here have short urls; tantek definitely comes to mind.
#
cambridgeport90[
My basic question is, for those of us who do have them, how can they be used outside of a POSSE scenario?
#
[tantek]
cambridgeport90[, what is it exactly that "most admins of most fediverse servers frown upon" and is this a documented thing or an undocumented common practice?
#
[tantek]
what are short domains
#
Loqi
short domains are commonly used on the IndieWeb for personal short URLs, or clever domain names https://indieweb.org/short-domains
#
[tantek]
plenty of uses there beyond POSSE
#
cambridgeport90[
In the documentation for Mastodon, in particular, it says that short links are not recommended. See here. Link shortening... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/libera.chat/f6a914369b222fec52caaa5bc0e8d1d3335900d2>)
#
[tantek]
huh, citation for that?
#
cambridgeport90[
Yeah, hence why I was confused. That's the only place where I can find that documentation guideline at all. My markdown did something weird, but I linked to the actual page at the bottom of the message. It was hard to see it, though, because it didn't get parced correctly.
#
cambridgeport90[
Other servers have ran with that; scholar.social being one, I think who explicitly bans short URLS anywhere, not even in your profile are you allowed to have one. Then again, they have other issues that make me wonder about them.
#
[tantek]
From the way that was written, it sounds more like URL shortener *services* are discouraged, and the author of that text was/is completely unaware of personal short domains
#
cambridgeport90[
dang. I sense a documentation edit... perhaps, or at least a talk with Gargron, because with Mastodon, you can't just submit a pull request to fix the documentation.
#
cambridgeport90[
I think you're right.

This is interesting, similar website finder: https://explore2.marginalia.nu/ entering my domain returns a lot of common indieweb sites
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, your like here: https://aaronparecki.com/2022/12/18/6/ is perhaps a good example / use-case for storing external reply-context information
#

I never thought I'd be so happy to have that feature on my website

It's almost like I've been preparing for the downfall of twitter for the last 10 years

i like the code of conduct! i think i may add this channel to my join list :3

virtue
tempted to purchase a domain instead of using a neocity purely so i can use php to automatically fetch all images in a particular directory instead of manually listing every single one
#
virtue
i have avoided making the art page on my neocity purely out of dread over having to manually list, link, and alt text every single one of the hundreds of photos ive taken

[KevinMarks] we need to draft a map for end of 2022!
#
[tantek]
What is social media map
#
Loqi
The social web map is a metaphoric map of social web sites, from fully indieweb to silos, representing their relationships, sizes, levels of IndieMark accomplishment (or site-death) and any other axes of interesting details we can capture https://indieweb.org/social_media_map
#
[tantek]
[KevinMarks] perhaps add those tweeted notable images directly to relevant sections on our wiki to start?
