[tantek]
capjamesg, what service/app do you use for email?
#
[tantek]
do you mean you don't understand what an Outbox is or what a Universal Outbox is? "purpose" is covered to some extent in my post, like "a source of material to blog"
#
[tantek]
and "publish such common ideas, concepts, points once, with a permalink, and then cite that permalink rather than retyping the same thing repeatedly"

<capjamesg#4492> The app has “Sent”.
#

<capjamesg#4492> My point being is that perhaps I may not be the only one who struggles to understand this term.
#

<capjamesg#4492> On the idea, now I think I get it, I like it.
#
aaronpk
frankly "outbox" is a pretty dated term in email too, since it's basically meaningless with any cloud-based email client
#
IWDiscordRelay
<capjamesg#4492> I would like a “universal search” that indexes my messages, blog posts, wiki pages, etc.
#
IWDiscordRelay
<capjamesg#4492> “a computer folder for outgoing email messages that have not yet been sent” what does this mean? 😅
#
aaronpk
exactly haha

when you had to dial into your email service to download and send email, but your email client would let you write and queue up messages while offline
#
[snarfed]
maybe phone email apps would register a bit more, they do the same thing now. but still most people probably don't think about it
#
aaronpk
even the gmail app on my phone abstracts away the outbox term
#
aaronpk
it says "offline, will send when online"
#
[snarfed]
no it's in there, in the drawer
#
[snarfed]
at least on Android
#
aaronpk
I have "Sent" and "Drafts" but nothing called "Outbox"
#
[snarfed]
interesting. maybe an iOS-ism
#
aaronpk
and if i hit send, the message actually shows up in my sent folder with a little spinning circle around the profile photo

[tantek]
yeah there's the weird Outbox / Sent folder distinction as I noted above to [KevinMarks] that's a plumbing/network detail
#
[tantek]
The popularity of Mastodon/AP has increased usage/awareness of the term "Inbox", that's one of the reasons for using the term "Outbox"
#
[tantek]
also these days, most apps (read: all social media and frankly maybe even Micropub clients) would actually be improved by the presence of an Outbox rather than just "failing to send/publish" if you happened to be offline or in some place with poor network connectivty
#
aaronpk
Does mastodon use the term inbox anywhere in the UI?? I thought it was just the protocol thing
#
[tantek]
"dial into your email service" may be gone, however, poor network connectivity is not
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, I thought I had seen it maybe in the Searchtodon description
#
[tantek]
because it was literally indexing everything that came into your inbox
#
[tantek]
and people got upset about that
#
ross[m]12
hi all - does anyone know if there is a micropub client anywhere which lets you complete an 'mp-slug' field on an event post? Thanks
#
Loqi
friendly reminder [tantek], ross[m]12, it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (Micropub)
#
[tantek]
uh oops. not sure how we distinguish talking about Micropub clients to *use* (and features/limitations) vs protocols
#
[tantek]
ross[m]12, 'mp-slug' does sound like an implementation question that would be better for #indieweb-dev though
#
[tantek]
I don't think any client calls it that in the UI

#
ross[m]12
but there is one perhaps that uses it behind the scenes in the post?
#
ross[m]12
[tantek]: what if I try 'micropub-client'?
#
[tantek]
ross[m]12, for the #indieweb channel, the key is to phrase questions / topics from a user perspective, based on use-cases, tasks, user interfaces, avoiding underlying plumbing

<capjamesg#4492> [tantek] I still think Universal Outbox is unnecessarily confusing.

capjamesg, do you have a better suggested term? or are you still confused by the functionality?
#
[tantek]
by "unnecessarily" do you mean you don't think it's useful to you

Is "personal search" a subset of a "Universal Inbox"?
#
capjamesg
> you don't think it's useful to you - yes, and I think the word "outbox" is confusing more generally.
#
capjamesg
"unified Sent box" from your blog post is a great articulation.
#
[tantek]
yeah that's where I started, conceptually, because "Drafts & sent" is what Slack calls it in their UI
#
[tantek]
personal search and universal inbox are kinda orthogonal. they are complementary but they can also exist without the other
#
[tantek]
I liked "Outbox" because it doesn't require that an item actually be *sent* (which implies various network availability etc.)

When is HWC Europe?
