This is brewing inside of Meta. And other reports claimed it would have "ActivityPub" support meaning that in some ways would be "Mastodon-compatible" - who knows? https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/metas-twitter-alternative-barcelona-is-taking-shape/648482/

Piggybacking on Instagram identity seems like a good move to me. Things will get really interesting if this does use ActivityPub. (Not holding my breath.)
#
[KevinMarks]
I can see FB doing that so it can DoS mastodon instances deniably, then propose a protocol they own to 'fix' it. They could start in a relatively benign way by offering their cache of OGP previews to masto instances…

[KevinMarks] That is a scary but believable future.

I've been thinking about indieweb and fediverse handles/identities a bit from first principles. we like DNS domains because 1) people can use them to get to you directly, without intermediaries, and 2) you can fully migrate hosts, stacks, etc underneath them without changing the identifier that people use to find you
#
[snarfed]
ActivityPub currently has a weak, clunky attempt at 2) with account migration based on the semi-standard Move activity and Mastodon's post export and import
#
[snarfed]
and account migration also partially attempts to address 1) by auto-redirecting and migrating followers
#
[snarfed]
but it will always be limited because it changes your identity from user@domain1 to user@domain2, whereas if your identity is just a domain, it stays the same across host migrations
#
[snarfed]
[tantek]'s description of this as the "Little Chad's garage" problem is really evocative. https://tantek.com/2023/001/t1/own-your-notes
#
[KevinMarks]
you can also do co-operative account migration at the http layer too if you don't overthink it and support 301 redirects
#
[KevinMarks]
This is written into WebSub, for example
#
[snarfed]
on the technical side, yes! not on the social side though. if someone knew you and your web site 10 yrs ago, and thinks, I wonder what's up with Kevin, let me go check kevinmarks.com, that works even if you've migrated hosts. it doesn't work as well with fediverse accounts, and not at all if your old instance is down
#
[KevinMarks]
previously https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8465 (which links back to the WebSub and older mastodon issues)
#
[KevinMarks]
I agree that your own domain is best, but being able to migrate to your own domain or between domains is good too. That reminds me, I need to see if I can resolve the fingerpointing between Google and GoDaddy on unmung again.

Who is Chad?
#
[snarfed]
oh definitely. if you really want to change your identifier itself, it's nice to have redirects. but domain-based identity lets you decouple changing identity from changing hosts. ActivityPub tries to bolt migration on top, but it'll never fully hide the fact that your identity include someone else's domain, which you can't control

Loqi
hey [KevinMarks] [snarfed]: it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (WebSub, ActivityPub)
#
[snarfed]
yeah maybe. not sure
#
[snarfed]
(^ unless you do AP from your own domain!)
#
[snarfed]
[jeremycherfas] metaphorical "someone else's platform." Big Chad is Elon, Little Chad is your fediverse instance admin
#
[jeremycherfas]
And Hanging Chad?
#
[jeremycherfas]
I mean, I got the metaphor; I’m wondering whether there is any additional cultural baggage to Chad’s Garage that I’m not getting?
#
[snarfed]
afaik Chad in 4chan/redpill meme circles means a bro, jock, or otherwise strong admirable guy. I think. definitely not an expert on that culture
#
[snarfed]
there's also a famous ish internet comic about a company like Facebook advertising that you can keep your stuff in their garage for free. I think? don't have the link off hand

[marksuth] is https://github.com/IndiePass/indiepass the repo to use going forward? should the open issues on https://github.com/marksuth/indigenous-android be transferred and then that repo archived?
#
[marksuth]
I’m going to keep the indigenous-android repo active at least until I've done the first cross-platform release
#
[marksuth]
f-droid relies on the indigenous-android repo for detecting builds and updates, so would break things there
#
[snarfed]
oh ok, so just treating them as separate apps still, sure
#
[marksuth]
for now at least, when the new cross platform version comes out, I will most likely do it as a new listing to move away from the com.indieweb.indigenous identifier in the play store
