unlisted++ (re private posts; imho unlisted can be 50-80% of the value with 5% of the work)

unlisted has 1 karma in this channel over the last year (2 in all channels)

My problem with unlisted is that *i* want to be able to find them again. So even if the post is just unlisted, I still need to make a search/browse interface that only I can see, and at that point that's most of the work of making the post also private
#
[snarfed]
maybe most of the work for yourself, but not most of the work for sharing it, AutoAuth (?) etc, right?
#
[snarfed]
grep until it hurts 😎
#
aaronpk
yeah i'm not sure what stage 2 of this looks like yet, but i think i have a clear enough path to private posts and private search that i'll get enough value out of that
#
[snarfed]
fair! yeah the real power of unlisted is in sharing them, not in creating or finding them
#

[snarfed]: I'm still tempted by Ticket Auth over autoAuth. It seems so much less complicated

TicketAuth makes the most sense to me as well

I'm going to bed, but would love a ticket auth chat another time,. perhaps in -dev

what's the old internet adage about how frequently the average group (mailing lists/newsgroups in that era) ends up talking about its own moderation instead of its topic? really hard to search for

Was that one of Clay Shirky's?
#
[snarfed]
Maybe! I vaguely remember a different name but not sure
#
[KevinMarks]
Geoff Cohen has a great observation about this. He said "The likelihood that any unmoderated group will eventually get into a flame-war about whether or not to have a moderator approaches one as time increases."
#
[KevinMarks]
> So there's this question "What is required to make a large, long-lived online group successful?" and I think I can now answer with some confidence: "It depends." I'm hoping to flesh that answer out a little bit in the next ten years.

all other citations I can find for Cohen's law quote Shirky

this feels worth wikifying, but I'm not sure where to put it to be findable again
#
[KevinMarks]
I could email Cohen and ask for a source I suppose.
#
[KevinMarks]
OK, I think that's enough for an entry
#

what is Cohen's law?
#
[KevinMarks]
what is Cohen’s law?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Cohen’s law" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Cohen’s law is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[KevinMarks]
Cohen’s law is "The likelihood that any unmoderated group will eventually get into a flame-war about whether or not to have a moderator approaches one as time increases."
