If you have any questions about websites, we're here to help!
#
capjamesg
Do you have a website already?
#
SleepyJ
yeah :) nothing fancy yet
#
SleepyJ
is this mostly targeted at newcomers and small projects?
#
capjamesg
SleepyJ any plans for your site?
#
capjamesg
My main thing is to update a calendar on my home page 😅
#
SleepyJ
I guess I wonder, what are the bounds of "indie web"? When does a project no longer classify as "indie"?
#
SleepyJ
Eventually I would like to make a business out of a website, but it is quite the long road to get there
#
[snarfed]
SleepyJ good question! it's not really about indie vs big, the emphasis is more on the web part
#
[snarfed]
ie, you're indieweb if you're http://sleepyj.org, or even http://janescookies.com, even if you're huge
#
[snarfed]
...you're not indieweb if you're http://facebook.com/sleepyj 😁

What is not indieweb?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "not indieweb" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "not indieweb is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
not indieweb is /silo
#
[tantek]

any tips to make a business from websites?
#
[tantek]
What are business models?
#
Loqi
business models are ways to offer indieweb products and or services that users pay for both for their own benefit, and in support an open indie web https://indieweb.org/business-models
#
SleepyJ
the difficult thing is to compete with the popular corporate offerings
#
SleepyJ
for example, if I make websites for people, I either charge them for the project and hand them off, or offer hosting and charge monthly fee
#
SleepyJ
monthly fee is probably better MRR in the long term
#
SleepyJ
but then that means competing with things like squarespace, wix, wordpress
#
SleepyJ
which seems rather intimidating
#
GWG
I don't think anything about what we believe as a community is against business in general. Certainly, against bad corporate behavior, but not against making money.
#
GWG
A good example would be micro.blog, which is a commercial endeavor, but incorporates a lot of the community philosophy.
#
SleepyJ
so as a community, do you about the business side of things?
#
SleepyJ
do you care*
#
GWG
Not as a community so much as individuals in the community. We're, admittedly, a bunch of hobbyists for the most part.
#
SleepyJ
Yeah that microblogging subscription model looks nice for the business owner
#
GWG
There are people in the community who are creating personal websites as a form of self-promotion.
#
SleepyJ
personal brand is a good point to start going into more serious sites for sure
#
GWG
But not as many looking to monetize on services. We've had a few other than micro.blog. Like withknown, which tried a commercial effort that didn't ultimately end up panning out for them.
#
SleepyJ
Got it
#
GWG
I wouldn't say I speak for everyone, but in general, the community isn't against commercial endeavors, or against people who want to try for one, but it isn't a community goal.
#
SleepyJ
the microblog site is giving me ideas
#
SleepyJ
Got it
#
SleepyJ
yeah there's a bit of a difference in the information when taken from a hobbyist perspective vs when it is taken from a entrepreneurship perspective
#
SleepyJ
both are good, but it is good to know where one stands
#
GWG
I think, if you had a business idea and wanted an opinion if it meshed with our community thoughts, we'd probably weigh in.
#
SleepyJ
nice ty :)

[chrisaldrich]: daring to call something StreetPass, I would assume that Nintendo has trademarked that term ;) It does look interesting. Especially when it just builds a list in the background while you browse.
#
Zegnat
Makes me wonder what other lists my browser could make for me. Maybe just in general how often I have read posts on different blogs, so it may surface blogs that I should subscribe too 🤔

Have updated the placeholder for planning IWC in Brighton for March 9/10. We have booked The Skiff, which has a capacity of 30 people. This date falls the weekend after Patterns Day (which is on the Thursday beforehand).

There is an IWC happening in Brighton?
#
[Paul_Robert_Ll]
Looks like it. Finding a venue was the blocker, but with that in place, planning can commence, I think.
#
capjamesg
Yay!
#
Loqi
yay!
#
capjamesg
I'm not sure if I will be able to make it, but I will try!
#
GWG
I just got invited to a wedding in NJ on the 12th. Darn
#
GWG
Not sure I can make that work, but will see.
#
GWG
What is the best way to get to Brighton?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "best way to get to Brighton" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "best way to get to Brighton is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
GWG
Oops
#
sknebel
LGW if there's useful flights there for you, then only a short-ish train ride down to the coast
#
sknebel
hm, going to be in the UK in May too, that's kinda annoying to do the trip twice so close to each other (but kinda too long to stick around the UK for). will have to think about options
#
Zegnat
March is coming up soon. I might have other work travel that conflicts, but will definitely start to have a look
#
Zegnat
Though I am sceptical of taking a train this time around :P

Zegnat: ferry via norway?
#
sknebel
(although that'd involve a bunch of train inside the UK then...)
#
capjamesg
Yeah. I think I have a work meetup around then; it depends how much of a buffer I would have between that and the IWC.
#
capjamesg
sknebel The Scottish rail network is great.
#
capjamesg
100% recommend.
#
capjamesg
(if a ferry was taken)
#
sknebel
huh, there are no UK-norway ferries anymore
#
sknebel
could've sworn there was one out of Stavanger
#
Zegnat
That would have been kinda fun
#
sknebel
seems that ended a decade ago. (might restart in 2026)

jeremycherfas
Good news about Brighton. I hope I can swing it, though travel will have to be air.
#
GWG
I love trains, but there isn't one from NYC to Brighton. And if there was, I think I'd have to leave a week early.

ooh, UK IWC?
