[tantek]starrwulfe++ +1000 that is an amazing, and brilliant, and incredibly well-written post. Thank you for writing it. Best write up of the recent dust up that I've seen. And I certainly wasn't expecting to be quoted π
[qubyte][capjamesg] number 14 (image map of something like a desktop) is a great idea. Iβve been looking for an excuse to use a `<map>` longer than I can remember. Reminds me of the old web, and perhaps also point and click adventures.
[tantek]Bit more for #indieweb-dev: I wish we could fix the map tag to scale and work with responsive styling and images (to #indieweb-dev for follow up)

[Joe_Crawford]The map element is hidebound to a predetermined pixel width. It doesn't accommodate alternate units to start with. Add to that you can display an image in a container and have parts of it hidden in an overflow none context, you can have height and width attributes set but also override them, including dynamically, with CSS, and you can explicitly set object-fit now, hiding parts of the image. If the part of the image with the map is
[Joe_Crawford]hidden, should the area element get removed from the tabbing context? And that's just brainstorming. Would be great to get a modernized map element!
[tantek][benatwork] real talk: this feels like the nth time you've pulled away from or quit various "social media". Would be interested in seeing a retrospective about that *cycle* and perhaps some insights into why it keeps repeating
[Joe_Crawford]I keep thinking of 90s Gibson books. I think it's in Virtual Light that Chevette Washington's mom (part of a religion there they believe TV is god) goes on a "Media Fast." I think the way we give kids "no screens" days or decide to spend days offline means that it's sensible to consider whether a formalized retreat from social media is something everyone ought to consider. In 12-step groups they talk about taking a continuous "personal
[Joe_Crawford]inventory" about ones own behavior. I think considering daily whether the phone, a particular app, a particular notification, social media setting is still working for you is worth doing. I know I do it. It's vexing because the big silos seem to adjust those notification settings without much regard for prior user decisions. (and... uh, forgive the spew of unsolicited response, please)
[tantek]to2ds no pressure to perform? clearly I need to incorporate capjamesg's 100 things to do on/for your personal site into IndieMark and make a ranked grading system of it π
[tantek]mahboubine, a few things. Your site should be setup to bring you joy. If something is not bringing you joy, it's ok to leave it out. Second, maintaining Webmentions within WordPress is an extra hassle, even for folks familiar with WordPress, so if displaying Webmentions / cross-site interactions are a goal, then choose something other than WordPress, unless tinkering with WordPress is a hobby that brings you joy.
[tantek]also wm != pingback != bridgy != wmio etc. you can have "plain" webmentions without any of the rest of those, and using those as an excuse to get rid of webmentions shows a lack of understanding of webmentions
