Hi all, nice to meet you.
#
kuzkuz.
I have a website and I would like to move away from the current hosting. It would be great to move onto an independent server.
#
kuzkuz.
By looking at the documentation of the Getting Started area on the website, it seems the suggested setup is to get an account on AWS. (https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started)

I understand indieweb to be **independent**. So, I was expecting to see instructions on how to setup your own server and how to expose it online or somethign similar 😄

#
kuzkuz.
Did I get it wrong?
#
kuzkuz.
Should I reconsider my expectations?
#
kuzkuz.
I'm currently interested in a static website hosting. No need for anything fancy.
#
[snarfed]
...but having said that, we don't push self-hosting or "independent" hosting specifically here. we focus on using your own domain and having usable access to your data. beyond that, we're open to the range of managed to self-hosted options

Oh, right. So it's not about the hosting, but it's more about the content of the website: the data ownership. 🤔
#
kuzkuz.
You see, I need to have a better understanding before I ask any questions 😄
#
kuzkuz.
I just came across indieweb in the last hour or so. Apologies for the dumb questions.
#
capjamesg
No questions are dumb!
#
capjamesg
And welcome!
#
capjamesg
It’s more about owning your own data than using a specific tool / set of tools.
#
capjamesg
If you have a website, you are on the indie web!

capjamesg++ yup. and kuzkuz you're obviously welcome to work toward owning more of your hosting too! lots of people here will be interested, especially in #indieweb-dev. it's just not the central focus of the community

I have a static website hosted on AWS, with the domain on Route53 and the website's files being loaded straight from an S3 bucket.
#
kuzkuz.
The reason why I chosen AWS in the first place is because is the cheapest I was able to find at that time (a few years ago).

Now my situation has changed and my dislike for AWS is stronger than money!

kuzkuz.: I don't mean to be a bother, but AWS seems like a better conversation for #indieweb-dev
#
kuzkuz.
I would like to move my website somewhere else but I have no clue about what hosting is good in terms of quality and reliability but also good in terms of "doing good for the betterment of the community rather than the most value for the shareholders". That type of good 🙂
#
kuzkuz.
I'm not an expert, though.
#
[snarfed]
yup! following up in #indieweb-dev

Hi! Figured checking with the Discord would be good! Currently working on static site using 11ty, also have a site through omg.lol but in the process of redoing a few things. Glad to be here c:

...but why does everybody have a "bot" tag next to their name? They seem to be genuine comments from humans 🤔

The chat is spread across irc, slack, discord, and maybe other places, and "bot" means a bot has copied the message written by a human from one of the other places to where you are
#
[tantek]
And in Slack, messages from other places have "APP" next to the chat names

I pushed myself out of my perfectionist procrastination zone and published three little paragraphs – nothing significant, I'm just trying to build some momentum to post more than once a year. https://www.claudinec.net/posts/2024-03-17-spring-summer-edition/

"blogging my way out of an argument" is a good motivator. Sometimes "blogging my way into an argument" happens as well...
#

Usually "blog to make it make sense" is my reasoning for 2/3 of my musings though. Thinking out loud (and sometimes yelling at clouds)

#

I love your AI usage disclosure.
#
.cidney
Thanks! Not a fan of Discord but have to use it all the time for gamedev things... so less friction this way.
#
capjamesg
We have a Slack and IRC, too, if either of those platforms are preferable!
#
.cidney
Haha; just added one today. Figured it was time. :p
#
.cidney
I use Slack and IRC even less... haven't really used IRC since I was a kid.
#
capjamesg
If you set up Webmentions on your site, let me know and I'd be happy to send you one as a demo.
#
capjamesg
I keep meaning to send to2ds a webmention too!
#
capjamesg
(I think I promised in HWC to2ds. I haven't forgotten!)
#
capjamesg
It's above "taylor swift lyrics bot" on my TODO list 😄
#
capjamesg
(Weird thing about our chat: to mention someone joining the chat from another platform like Slack / irc (who will have "Bot" next to their name), you can't use the @ in the same way. So to2ds is a user, but not in Discord; mentioning the name should be enough to trigger a mention.)
#
.cidney
That's my next project when I have a block of time to work on my website... could definitely use help there. I tried installing the Jekyll webmentions plugin but no clue how it's supposed to send them.... and the documentation is mostly "install it and it should magically work".
#
capjamesg
The folks in #indieweb-dev will be able to help with that!
#
redblobgames
I tried the IRC for a while but I wasn't using it (or slack) often. But Discord I use every day (for gamedev), so I ended up coming to the indieweb discord.

capjamesg - Thank you. Inbound webmentions are sort of working, though far from refined at this point. starrwulfe helped me debug the other day when my reply didn't include the actual reply :)
