aaronpk people overindex on the cost. free services are not always better, just look at /site-deaths

#
cophee Got it
#
cophee I guess the guide will need to redirect + convince people to get their own domain
#
cophee Ok! just asking since price seemed to be a big factor in why people don't adopt their own sites in the survey
#
cophee It's so true
#
cophee It's like 16/yr
#
cophee Just need to find a way to convince people
#
pcarrier looked into importing linktr.ee, and turns out they expose the page settings and links in a nice JSON that's super easy to extract
#
cophee pcarrier[d]: awesome!!!
#
pcarrier almost too clean. https://gist.github.com/pcarrier/606545b6e8049ca04515fcb9f04f4be4

pcarrier [edit] almost too clean. https://gist.github.com/pcarrier/606545b6e8049ca04515fcb9f04f4be4
#
pcarrier (see scrape.js at the bottom for the 10 lines of code…)
#
pcarrier we've got `pageTitle`, `links` sorted by position with their `title` and `URL`, `theme.colors`…
#
pcarrier not super interested in going further down the rabbit hole, virtualyl nothing to learn here, but if somebody wanted to tackle a static site generator I could provide some help
#
cophee Just talked to my professors about the premise of IndieWeb –– they seem very interested
#
cophee (Social Media Cultures subject is focused on the issues surrounding social media)

cophee aaronpk: I think maybe the easiest would be micro.blog then
#
cophee Yeah... Wordpress can get very complicated
#
cophee Ohno, trying to sign up for micro.blog to see what the user setup flow is like and getting this error
#
cophee Not sure if it's just on my side

cophee Weaving in some of the readings from class here! But trying to explain things as simple as possible
#
cophee And please feel free to leave comments + suggestions on this Figma!

#
cophee I want it to be as representative of the IndieWeb values as possible 😃
#
pcarrier thinking about how to get people started fast and for free. step 1: enter your email address on found.as, get a login link; step 2a: pick a handle you've already registered, 2b: register a new handle, here `pcarrier`; step 3a: import a linktr.ee, 3b: enter a few named links, some with `rel="me"`, 3c: edit plain HTML, 3d: redirect to your own domain; step 4: enjoy simple HTML being served as https://found.as/pcarrier; step 5: set up pcarrier
#
pcarrier Sorry 1, 2 are sequential, 2a, 2b are alternatives
#
[KevinMarks] The other quickstart is omg.lol which has a different vibe to http://micro.blog but suits some people a lot

#
pcarrier ha. step 1: enter your username, step 2: pay $20 😅
#
[KevinMarks] There's also https://github.com/indieweb/blank-gh-site which is free but more fiddly. That's the trade off.

#
[KevinMarks] I suppose there's also http://blogger.com for the full retro blog experience, that has somehow lasted 25 years without being killed by Google

#
cophee Thanks @[KevinMarks]!!
#
[Joel_Auterson] I use GH too but the issue with static site generators and Indieweb is the amount of work you have to do to get things like Micropub working
#
[Joel_Auterson] I used lambdas for it but it’s got to the point where I slightly regret not just having a server 😅
#
capjamesg We have HWC Europe online this evening at 7pm UK time: https://events.indieweb.org/2024/05/homebrew-website-club-europe-london-HJs8USwnq2Ie

[byJP] ↩️ I’ve had a lot of success with static site (hugo built in Github) and running https://getindiekit.com on a raspberry pi in my closet. But you still need to be comfortable setting up a linux machine etc; it’s definitely not beginner friendly eh‽

pcarrier capjamesg[d] thoughts on https://found.as/ ? everything should work but "publish" 🙂
#
pcarrier well, and password verification, because there's zero backend
#
pcarrier oh right, it'll put something online
#
[Joe_Crawford] capjamesg++ for co-hosting!
#
pcarrier you type the path, you pick a password to protect/allow writes, you pick the type and fill in the HTML/markdown/redirect URL, you hit publish, the thing you described is online?
#
[Joe_Crawford] [marksuth]++ for co-hosting!
#
pcarrier capjamesg[d] well, you shouldn't care 🙂
#
pcarrier how I store the page?
#
pcarrier it's gonna go into my minio cluster, an S3 clone, stored in plain text to be served over HTTPS at https://found.as/pcarrier or such?
#
pcarrier it's using crypto to avoid accounts and passwords passing over the network
#
pcarrier but not encryption, only signatures
#
pcarrier fair enough

[0x3b0b] If they're still taking sign-ups (I never got an email when I tried to check it out at the end of 2022, so...not really sure), "haza.website" might be another of the easiest and cheapest on-ramps. Seems "pine.blog" has a "we're leaving soon" banner but I didn't find a blog post or anything explaining why...
