I'm confused how they got DMs in there. I know they aren't fully private but shouldn't be available to other servers

I don't know, but I long ago got the impression that mechanism for DMs in Mastodon/ActivityPub is so janky that I don't really trust it to begin with.

Does someone have a good guide to setup user chat authentication in owncast?

I have owncast setup and has authentication option. I add my own https site (would like that to default for users). But then I set user pass and it fails auth. Clearly missing something and owncast site just says it's and indieauth server but doesn't give any instructions how to use it

#

the indieauth option for owncast is only for chat, not for logging in to owncast itself
#

Fastly introduced a free tier today, which may be good for indieweb folks who want a basic CDN but don't want to be involved with Cloudflare. https://www.fastly.com/pricing

That's all I want it for. Chat. Right now they get random usernames. They can change the username. But can not use the authenticate option
#
aaronpk
there are two chat authentication options available: https://owncast.online/docs/chat/chat-authentication/
#
aaronpk
i'm not sure what you mean because "then I set user pass and it fails" suggests you're mixing up chat authentication with admin login

When I click the user box above chat I get option to change name or authenticate. Authenticate brings up a url field. I enter my own owncast site into the field. It then pops a user/pass field.
#
aaronpk
are you logged in to your owncast site?

I logged into the admin panel. I then joined the stream chat myself from the main site. I got a random chat nine like everyone else does. I changed the name to my name.
#
drizzt09
I used the authentication option and it auto logged in as my admin user and linked my chat user to my admin user.
#
drizzt09
I then opened the stream site incognito. Got another random name. Changed name to my middle name. Tried authentication to my site and did not use admin but I don't know what to use.

#
aaronpk
that makes sense, you need to be logged in to your owncast in order to use your owncast to log in to another
#
aaronpk
so in an incognito window you would see the popup asking you to log in to your site
#
drizzt09
I don't want to log into another. I want my viewers to be able to register and authenticate their own users.
#
drizzt09
I have another user that it random name. Changed to his name. I see him in admin and I set mod to him. He doesn't have mod capabilities. I assumed this is because he also is not authenticating.
#
aaronpk
they will need an account somewhere in order to authenticate, that account could be their own owncast server or their website that supports indieauth
#
drizzt09
Ya none of my viewers will have thag
#
drizzt09
[edit] Ya none of my viewers will have that
#
aaronpk
then i'm not sure how you expect them to authenticate
#
drizzt09
Well I thought the purpose of the authentication option was to create an authentication. Seems like a weird design.
#
dosmaen
I just verify myself using my mastodon account
#
dosmaen
It sends you a code in a private toot to verify that it's you and it works ok
#
aaronpk
oh right also mastodon
#
drizzt09
Are there other services that can be used beside mastadon to authenticate against?
#
aaronpk
the purpose of the authentication option is to allow a visitor to prove they are the same person when they come back to the site later
#
aaronpk
gabe didn't want to create a whole user management system inside owncast, which is why there are no local accounts for visitors
#
drizzt09
Which is what I want. But none of my users have their own indieauth, owncast or mastadon accounts
#
drizzt09
These are all facebook group members coming over.
#
drizzt09
Can they authenticate against facebook?
#
aaronpk
no, just indieauth/mastodon/fediverse/owncast
#
dosmaen
What kind of stuff do you typically stream?
#
aaronpk
you can read more about the design goals on the github https://github.com/owncast/owncast/discussions/440
#
drizzt09
dosmaen: What does this matter?
#
aaronpk
logging in with facebook or anything similar would require you as the owncast instance operator to go register for API keys at facebook/etc which also isn't practical which is why he doesn't want to add that
#
dosmaen
Just curious, but you're right it's offtopic. Please ignore.
#
aaronpk
anyway you might have better luck getting owncast support from here: https://github.com/owncast/owncast/discussions
#
drizzt09
Ok so can I hide the authentication option as it's just gonna confuse every single viewer. And how do I mod a member? As I mentioned a user was middle but he doesn't have the options.
#
aaronpk
i don't know, you should probably read the owncast docs or ask over in their github

aaronpk: Wait aren't you the one I am seeing people reference that puts the whole site behind authentication using nginx? Would that be a better option ? Would this create the ability for them to create their own user and login?
#
aaronpk
i don't think there is a way to tie that to chat accounts tho
#
drizzt09
Oh. Thats just to get into the site only?
