My in-laws somehow managed to get "year of free ice cream" cards from their local franchise for the last 2 years.

Lars-Christian++ nicely done! What kind of archive UI do you have for navigating them?

Thanks @[tantek] just a simple yearly table of contents at the top https://lars-christian.com/posts/
#
Lars-Christian
Been thinking about something tag based like Rach Smith does https://rachsmith.com/tags/ but in my experience nobody ever uses anything other than a chronological archive ^_^
#
[tantek]
oh nice! and then a flat list of posts grouped by year sections
#
[tantek]
what is archive
#
Loqi
archive in the context of the indieweb refers to date-grouped (often monthly) sets of posts (AKA personal historical archives, a common form of temporal navigation), but can sometimes mean archival copy, a copy of a web page made (often by someone other than the author) at a particular point in time https://indieweb.org/archive

[tantek]: That question I asked yesterday... you weren't around, but do you have any thoughts? That's usually the sort of thing you gave thought to. Different ways to present lists/directories

Sounds a bit abstract. Do you have a specific use in mind?

I'm looking for some design inspiration
#
sebbu
i have lots of lists, but they're usually simple in design, the most important thing is being complet, up-to-date, and easy to update (preferably automatically)
#
sebbu
complete*
#
jeremycherfas
If entries aren't too long, I like to have two columns if the container is wide. Especially if they are links.
#
GWG
I just think simple bulleted lists are visually overdone
#
GWG
Wondering about other designs, even table style
#
sebbu
it also depends how simple or complex what you're listing is
#
sebbu
ie, for novels, i want to read the reading position, which can be in multiple part (volume, chapter, part)
#
sebbu
s/read/store/
#
sebbu
also i have several reading list depending on state (currently reading, plan to read, completed, dropped, stalled, paused)
#
GWG

#
sebbu
https://sebbu2.github.io/LN-backup-sync/#listings thoses onesaren't up to date, but they were complete (and most important, automatically generated by me)
#
jeremycherfas
No visible bullets
#
GWG
Hmmm...
#
sebbu
the first link is for www.royalroad.com, which hosts stories before books gets published into amazon (kindle unlimited)
#
sebbu
I recently subscribed to a few dozen newsletters of book authors, and i end up getting giveaways / advanced reading copies on one of 2 sites : storyoriginapps or bookfunnel
#
[tantek]
GWG, a follow(er|ing)s list and a list of acquisitions are quite different use-cases! the information you might display (or not) in each case is quite different
#
[tantek]
what sebbu said and jeremycherfas that'd about "depends how simple or complex what you're listing is"
#
GWG
Yes, I'm looking to improve all my list type displays
#
GWG
I can show you an active example
#
GWG
I like the timeline list but.... could be better
#
[tantek]
great example, a list of places benefits greatly from a map overview display
#
GWG
I want to do more types and trying to study examples for inspiration
#
[tantek]
I think it's ok to start with a "simple" unordered list with default styling of plain text items, and then progressively enhance from there
bterry1 joined the channel
#
[tantek]
maybe we can collect examples of different types of lists on wiki pages and go from there
#
[tantek]
I agree with jeremycherfas example/point that depending on the list (or items therein) no visible bullets may be needed
#
[tantek]
GWG, you can also search Wikipedia for examples of lists of various kinds of things, and see what aspects they include. they often use tables for this
#
jeremycherfas
Thanks [tantek] I use the indentation as a way of indicating the "depth" of each item, and the truth is that there are very few days with more than one entry, so perhaps not needed.
#
sebbu
todo lists !
#
sebbu
groceries lists (you just need to be able to check items on the list while walking through the shop with your smartphone)
#
sebbu
(todo lists works too for that, just mark products in the cart as completed tasks)
#
sebbu
recipe list (contains ingredients and a list of steps)

There’ll be one next week GWG. As tantek indicated, “all list type displays” is large and not really “solvable”— I think if you brought some specific lists we could brainstorm a lot of the ways to work with them. From bullets, metadata, spacing, typographic aspects, interactivity aspects. So highly encourage you to bring some lists of items to style.
#
GWG
I would
#
GWG
But not sure I'm available
#
GWG
I'll have to check
#
[Joe_Crawford]
I’ve not adjusted the times for FrESH in a while. I’m up for adjusting the one after next.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
I’m vaguely up for a pop up that’s list focused
#
jeremycherfas
I'm up to switch lists from horizontal to vertical for larger and smaller screens
#
GWG
I'm happy to propose a pop-up about it

#
Lars-Christian
@GWG for https://david.shanske.com/2024/12/18/map/ I think just removing the bullets would clean it up a lot. The timestamp doubles as the item marker.
#
jeremycherfas
I really need to crack on with my ground-up redesign; fixing the dark mode stuff has made my site much less attractive than it used to be, at least in light mode, which, of course, is where I spend my time.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
GWG and [jeremycherfas] if you two can agree on a time weds or thurs I’m in
#
jeremycherfas
This week? Going to be very difficult for me. Thursday I have an online lecture at 6pm CET and Wednesday I'll probably be baking around that time.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
How about Friday? Or Saturday?
#
jeremycherfas
Possible, although to be honest I'm happy to wait for the next proper FrESH

#
Lars-Christian
Here's another example of how I do "list" on my site, with books I've read: https://lars-christian.com/logs/reading/
#
Lars-Christian
Quite different from post lists
#
Lars-Christian
I think the most important consideration is the nature of the information you're listing
#
Lars-Christian
For my books list, I try to vaguely evoke the feeling of each entry being a book in how I list them
#
[Joe_Crawford]
It’s a super rich topic. For me, the goal would be to try to enumerate why it’s such a rich topic. And then try to articulate why to have slightly different presentations of different kinds of lists.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
If it’s not a pop-up, that’s fine. And yes, I think it will be an evergreen topic for a front end study halls.

#
GWG
I wonder what other pop-ups might be possible
#
GWG
I miss them
#
[tantek]
consider for example a "list of photos" which is so specialized it has evolved into many ways of presentation
#
[tantek]
what is a photogrid
#
Loqi
photo grid is a visual display of a series of photo posts, typically 3 in a column, where only the photo of the post is visible, omitting the text https://indieweb.org/photogrid

re: reminder system, I think it's like choose your own calendar system then subscribe to the ICS?

I'm interested in setting up a simple application that regularly pulls in a json file, parses it for updates, and then shoots off a simple HTTP GET/POST request to ping ntfy.sh based on some states. What would be the best way to do this? I could probably do it all in Python?
#
xgpt
I'd also like to add a webUI to turn the service on/off. Basically just a big switch to say "run/don't run"
#
gRegor
Hi xgpt, that's probably a better question for our #indieweb-dev channel
