acegiakInteresting thought today, about how the primary social media posting of so many of my friends is through instagram stories, which kind of fundamentally doesn't work in any kind of distributed or federated ecosystem because the enforcement of the limitations on the availability of the content just instantly falls apart. I think there's potentially a version where it's ok if people understand that bad actors could potentially archive
[schmarty]ah, i don't see aaronpk's example on there - he has (had?) a feature on his site for stories on his homepage. if he has recently posted one, his avatar gets a halo and clicking on the avatar brings up the ephemeral post.
[tantek]That kind of mismatch between feature and app is a clue that the app has incentive to hold your attention which likely means it is sending your real time behavioral data to various trackers
[tantek]one meaning of "unpublished" is "has yet to be published", a kind (state?) of a draft, perhaps private or perhaps shared with folks using an unlisted URL
carrvo"Draft" is a pretty standard term in writing for a shared work that has yet to be officially "published" so I don't see why you distinguish it here. "Beta testing" being similar for software but less appealing.
carrvoI think the semantic changes whether you are talking about a draft for the purpose of storing in-flight work, or a copy for review before official publication (shared with a limited audience).
[aciccarello]I typically think of unpublished as referring to drafts. While the work could make sense for removing content, I don't tend to use or interpret it that way.
gRegorIn ProcessWire it has an "unpublished" state, which is basically a draft. The post has a URL but it's not public on the site and would 404 if anyone other than a signed in admin accessed it.
gRegorAll new posts have that state by default. The UI has a "Publish" button and a "Save and Keep Unpublished" button. Once it's published, though, there isn't a "verb" button to unpublish it; instead under the post settings you can check the "Unpublished" box.
[tantek]if existing software/services already have "unpublished" as a literal label in their UI, that is reason enough to document a specific page for it with those examples to start with
