is the lack of CSS intentional (or is it a me thing 😄)?

Interesting thought today, about how the primary social media posting of so many of my friends is through instagram stories, which kind of fundamentally doesn't work in any kind of distributed or federated ecosystem because the enforcement of the limitations on the availability of the content just instantly falls apart. I think there's potentially a version where it's ok if people understand that bad actors could potentially archive
#
acegiak
I have no idea what you would call the equivalent on indieweb or fedi or ATproto. Intentionally Disappearing Posts?
#
Loqi
hey acegiak, that's a lot of dev jargon! federated, ATProto... can you move to #indieweb-dev?

not sure about a more descriptive name, but there are some good resources and examples gathered at https://indieweb.org/story
#
[schmarty]
ah, i don't see aaronpk's example on there - he has (had?) a feature on his site for stories on his homepage. if he has recently posted one, his avatar gets a halo and clicking on the avatar brings up the ephemeral post.

Still works! I just haven't posted anything in a while

And to be fair, Instagram stories are also easy to archive, just take a screenshot or screen recording

why we need stories in banking app?

if my bank brought in stories into the app, it would be enough for me to swap banks

That kind of mismatch between feature and app is a clue that the app has incentive to hold your attention which likely means it is sending your real time behavioral data to various trackers

We have a lot of mentions of "unpublished" in our prior chats (https://indiechat.search.cweiske.de/?q=unpublished) and a few mentions on the wiki, however we don't have a page for it
#
[tantek]
One challenge I see is two distinct uses (by folks here, in the wild, etc.)
#
[tantek]
one meaning of "unpublished" is "has yet to be published", a kind (state?) of a draft, perhaps private or perhaps shared with folks using an unlisted URL
alfiee joined the channel
#
[tantek]
another meaning of "unpublished"' is in reference to an action taken "unpublish" after the fact, i.e. site X unpublished posts by author Y.
#
[tantek]
I've used the first meaning myself, though I'm leaning towards the latter meaning, in the same way as "undo"
#
[tantek]
I wonder if there is an alternative/better term for the first meaning of "unpublished"
#
carrvo
"Draft" is a pretty standard term in writing for a shared work that has yet to be officially "published" so I don't see why you distinguish it here. "Beta testing" being similar for software but less appealing.
#
carrvo
Or "early access" is common for online.
#
capjamesg[d]
[tantek] I used "unpublished draft" to emphasise that despite having a URL, the post is not yet published as a full post on my site.
#
capjamesg[d]
Maybe unpublished is redundant, but maybe the nuance is helpful.
#
carrvo
"Undo" and "removed" are pretty good terms for the removal of published content.
#
carrvo
I think the semantic changes whether you are talking about a draft for the purpose of storing in-flight work, or a copy for review before official publication (shared with a limited audience).
#
carrvo
Oo, "expunged" seems like a cool word to use.
#
[aciccarello]
I typically think of unpublished as referring to drafts. While the work could make sense for removing content, I don't tend to use or interpret it that way.
#
[aciccarello]
In print "unpublished works" are usually content that was not yet published

In ProcessWire it has an "unpublished" state, which is basically a draft. The post has a URL but it's not public on the site and would 404 if anyone other than a signed in admin accessed it.

All new posts have that state by default. The UI has a "Publish" button and a "Save and Keep Unpublished" button. Once it's published, though, there isn't a "verb" button to unpublish it; instead under the post settings you can check the "Unpublished" box.
#
[tantek]
if existing software/services already have "unpublished" as a literal label in their UI, that is reason enough to document a specific page for it with those examples to start with
#
[tantek]
we may have to live with the term having two meanings, i.e. either before or after "published" (but not deleted)
