creating anything public is apt to get criticism. some criticism is reasonable. some less so. part of putting things out in the world is sometimes it comes in and it's hostile or unhinged and it's jarring when that happens. learning to give it proportionate appropriate attention _or inattention_ is a key.

heya! So today I went on a kick exploring smaller internet and I just found out about IndieWeb. So really silly question, what is it that y'all do here? Build personal project? Share websites with each other? I'm excited, just don't know about what yet
#
[aciccarello]
Hi ruslan! Most of us have personal websites and share about what we're doing with them.
#
[aciccarello]
We have a #indieweb-dev room for technical discussions, a #indieweb-cafe room for chit chat, and a #indieweb-random channel for sharing fun links
#
ruslan
okay I am even more excited! I've had my site rosipov.com for the past 11 years, just stumbled upon POSSE and getting excited about following the principles
#
[aciccarello]
Nice! 11 years is a decent age. I think I'm coming up on 8 years.
#
ruslan
nice! What are some of the cool things you do with your site?

I've probably put the most time into my blog posts, recipes, and photos
#
[aciccarello]
The sitemap page lists some more of the top level pages https://www.ciccarello.me/sitemap/
#
[aciccarello]
It supports displaying mentions from other sites and posting using Micropub apps
#
ruslan
oy are you in San Diego? I'm in North Park
#
[aciccarello]
Nice! We've got some other san diegans in the community!
#
ruslan
oh you all had a meetup in December a few blocks from my house!
#
ruslan
I love your site btw, really nicely organized
#
[aciccarello]
Cool! I was just about to mention that!

thanks! You're a great photographer! Those are awesome pictures - saved the whole blog

I didn't expect there to be folks from San Diego that's exciting

[preview] [Anthony Ciccarello] I’ve noticed a few people recently refer to their top-level pages as “slash pages”. Honestly my first reaction was “Aren’t those just ‘pages’?”, but I’ve come to find the term kinda fun. But when people started adding a /slashes sla...

[aciccarello]
Yeah, gRegor and [artlung] are pretty active in chat
#
[artlung]
Welcome ruslan! And yes, we intend to have another camp in December. That'll be our 3rd.
#
ruslan
woo! At the very least I'll drop by! I'll put my name on the wiki. When my newborn stops napping on me and I can move that is
#
[aciccarello]
I'd love to move to date-based pagination on my site, probably with a more simplified list. Your archive looks really clean

#
gRegor
what is San Diego
#
Loqi
San Diego is a city in California that started a Homebrew Website Club meetup 2019-12-11 and hosted its first IndieWebCamp on 2023-12-16…17 https://indieweb.org/San_Diego
#
gRegor
when is hwc?
#
Loqi

We have these virtual meetups on Zoom pretty regularly, show off things you've done on your site, discuss ideas, etc. ^The Americas one is on Pacific timezone.

oh that'd be cool. I'll check it out, although I'm a bit Zoomed out - I work remotely and I'd rather wait for an in person meetup even if it takes a year hah
#
[aciccarello]
haha, totally understandable
#
gRegor
Fair :)
#
[aciccarello]
HWC is pretty laid back if you ever decide to drop by. People come late or leave early and the conversation meanders through various topics.
#
ruslan
I'll be there! And oh man I'm deep in the rabbit hole, just found out about the carnival which is fun https://www.thingelstad.com/2025/03/27/renewal-indieweb-carnival.html and already found a thing I want on my website: "reply by email" - how cool is that?
#
[aciccarello]
Reply by email is great! I've gotten a few emails that way
#
ruslan
I've been thinking of overhauling the discussion on my blog. I've done different things (especially back when https://rosipov.com was a WordPress blog) and I'm currently using Disqus since I host a static site on GitHub pages... I've been considering making a Google group or something and embedding that in comments. You know, everyone has an email...

[aciccarello]: what's this respond from another site button I see under your posts?
#
ruslan
gRegor: how do you handle discussions?
#
[artlung]
the webmention rabbit hole ruslan. welcome to it!
#
[artlung]
add to that folks who use bridgy (which is what gregor does) to syndicate to mastodon and or bluesky
#
ruslan
[artlung]: what do you use?
#
[artlung]
and I do a hybrid approach, I do some backfill from mastodon to blog posts.
#
[artlung]
what is webmention?
#
[aciccarello]
haha, yep. It's a fun rabbit hole
#
Loqi
Webmention is an open web standard (W3C Recommendation) for conversations and interactions across the web, a powerful building block used for a growing distributed network of peer-to-peer comments, likes, reposts, and other responses across the web https://indieweb.org/webmention
#
ruslan
I feel like I have so much homework after this chat lol
#
[artlung]
for my blog posts, WordPress handled incoming regular comments (or trackbacks) and also webmentions. and when I link to my site on mastodon I backfill posts using jwz's perl script + php plugin on his hacks page.
#
[aciccarello]
bridgy translates mastodon posts to webmentions and http://webmention.io is what keeps track of the mentions
#
ruslan
I didn't know about the webmentions standard, reading
#
ruslan
[artlung]: Link to your site?
#
[artlung]
dig your site. I look forward to sending you a webmention at some point. 🙂

today I added a "now" page, part of the "slashpages" idea. https://artlung.com/now/
#
gRegor
ruslan, I have both local comments (for like a year after an article is published), or can receive webmentions at any time
#
gRegor
what is getting started

🎉 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started

[aciccarello]
[artlung]++ Cool! Does your /now page pull the latest of each post types?
#
Loqi

#
[aciccarello]
Speaking of San Diego, I need to head to Oceanside harbor
#
[artlung]
mostly it reads rss feeds to put that together dynamically.
#
[aciccarello]
Oh, that's smart
#
ruslan
[artlung]: loving your site! Saved!
#
[aciccarello]
My fear with making a now page is keeping it updated. Unless I start logging a lot more activities I'm afraid it would feel stale
