# 06:41 perryflynn nice, you can use the xpath parser from freshrss to parse h-feeds (or any other item lists) if there is no rss.
# 06:41 perryflynn was able to add a website into my feeds which does not have rss or atom.
# 06:41 Loqi hey perryflynn, that's a lot of dev jargon! parse, parser, RSS, ATOM... can you move to #indieweb-dev?

# 07:21 cophee Wanting to start an indieweb club of sorts in Syd after talking to a friend today about wanting to make personal websites
# 07:21 cophee Any ideas on how I might do that?
# 07:24 cophee zachary_kai[d]: Tried it but the form errored out for me!

# 07:31 sarna hey, I'm setting up my website, and I wonder if there's any good way of setting up a multilingual one? I kinda don't want to commit to subdomains/paths
# 07:31 cophee Going to try to get a member list before booking 😃
# 07:32 sarna it's a personal site so it wouldn't be like a corporate site with everything mechanically translated into all langs
# 07:37 cophee sarna: @sarna are you using any frameworks for your website at the moment?
# 07:38 sarna cophee: I'm writing my own SSG, but I could use something like 11ty/jekyll if it was much easier
# 07:38 Loqi hey cophee sarna, would you mind moving this more technical conversation (frameworks, Jekyll, SSG) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!
# 07:38 sarna hm, is this a bot? 🤔
# 07:39 Loqi Internationalization (AKA internationalisation, i18n; localization, l10n.) is the process of adapting software/content to various languages https://indieweb.org/i18n
# 07:39 sarna then I won't listen for now :D
# 07:39 sarna ohh that's very neat
# 07:44 perryflynn sarna: I do that on svr.ls and have just language specific Indexes and name German posts just .html and English ones .en.html as extension. Also checkout the html, there are meta alternate tags to link them. Also the lang attribute is set correctly.
# 07:45 sarna honestly I really like the minimalist approach with flags
# 07:45 sarna this still leaves the issue of having the UI in one language only, but eh, not too bad
# 07:46 perryflynn Yea for the ui I was lazy, since almost any tech person in Germans can basic English.
# 07:47 perryflynn *in Germany can read basic English.
# 07:48 sarna perryflynn: oh lovely, I should be able to set up a static site like yours too
# 07:48 sarna not too complicated, and there's good UX for people interested in both languages! that's what I didn't like about subdomains
# 07:50 zachary.kai doesnm No worries! I've added you to the directory!
# 07:52 zachary.kai wingpang_com[d]: Thanks so much for spotting the error! Much appreciated. It's fixed now, and I've added your listing to the directory.

# 08:07 doesnm @zachary.kai did you send webmention to sites which you added?
[Jo] and kebokyo joined the channel
# 08:35 zachary.kai No, I didn't, as it didn't occur to me to do so! That's an excellent idea. I've marked up the page with the right formats and sent two webmentions. Let me know if you recieve it!

# 11:22 cophee wanting to find something easy to set up + customise at a low cost for ppl who are starting out
# 11:23 cophee maybe wordpress with indieweb plugins?
# 11:24 capjamesg Yeah. There aren't many all-in-one solutions with support for the various IndieWeb technologies.
# 11:25 cophee i'll dive into wordpress a bit then!!
# 11:27 perryflynn in the next 4-8 weeks my intercom project is also ready to be published and tested. it brings interfaces to add indieauth, webmentions, two-way syndication to mastodon and micropub to statically generated websites.

# 12:44 [KevinMarks] @sarna flags are a bad proxy for languages. Every country has multiple languages what does 🇨🇭 mean? Or, put another way, we are all imperfectly multilingual.
# 12:44 [KevinMarks] One approach I have seen is to have long posts in more than one language, each of which has summaries in the other language the blog is in.
# 12:45 [KevinMarks] Google has had a bad influence by assuming monolingual pages by default.
# 12:46 sarna [KevinMarks]: good point
# 12:47 sarna "...have long posts in more than one language..." -> you mean with 3 languages the entire long post would be translated twice (+ original language, so 3 posts), and also each post would have 2 summaries in other languages underneatch?
# 12:49 sarna "Google has had a bad influence by assuming monolingual..." -> not only google, just about everybody in sillicon valley/big corp :P
Owal joined the channel
# 13:04 [KevinMarks] No I meant for my (non-hypothetical) Swiss friend who would post in French and English the main post would be in whatever language made the most sense for the topic, and there would be summaries in both French and English to provide context. You could extend that further, but probably not to a lot of languages.
