cambridgeport90 The conversations over at https://reddit.com/r/blogging are breaking my heart.
#
cambridgeport90 Every other post up there is related to commercialization.
#
osteophage Not sure if this has already been brought up, but I just found out that Yay.boo, a small web host by Good Enough, is shutting down. https://goodenough.us/blog/2025-11-03-we-re-shutting-down-yay-boo-and-ponder/
#
osteophage No, quite the contrary, unfortunately.

[Al_Abut] One thing I noticed about the Generations page that may or may not be answered more recently is that the first 3 generations had convincing and tactical answers to why people should make a website, but the 4th and final mainstream audience didn’t, it only had a focus on how to go about doing it.
#
[Al_Abut] This feels like a familiar gap that we talk about all the time, don’t mean to beat a dead horse, it’s just me occasionally noodling on the same “indienewbies” session from the first IWCSD to see if I can find a different answer

cupparex As a newcomer to the IndieWeb, but not to the concept of owning your own online content, I liked the generations concept. One of the questions I've had since I found this space recently was "where do I fit in" and the generations concept does give some structure and answers in that regard.

slowerloris Does anyone have a good approach for marking up an h-entry for status/rich presence?

slowerloris I also have a personal site, but how do you mark up entries for things like: playing <game>, listening to <spotify-song>, watching <series>
#

#
Loqi A post is content published at a permalink, usually with an explicit published date in contrast to a named page, or the act of publishing that content, typically publicly, sometimes to a limited audience or even privately like a draft https://indieweb.org/post
#
[Al_Abut] It wouldn’t load for me. Is it up?
#
Loqi h-entry is the microformats2 vocabulary for marking up blog posts on web sites https://indieweb.org/h-entry
#
capjamesg That article has a bit more detail if you want to enrich your post with microformats. https://microformats.org/wiki/h-entry explains more too.

bwnton hi, i’m benton! i’m a digital culture strategist who spends a lot of time scrolling and reporting on emerging trends
#
bwnton recently, i’ve become increasingly conscious of my need to reinvent my relationship to the internet, invest in my own space online that isn’t (directly) controlled by billionaires, and engage with spaces building the digital communities i want to exist in, rather than just the overstimulating, brain-rotted ones we are all dissatisfied with

bwnton i’m currently in the process revitalising my website and transferring everything to github/microhosting, but i’ll definitely need some advisement on best practices for indieweb sites when i’m at that stage

[morganm] Hello bwnton, welcome, I think many of us relate strongly to the sentiments you share about avoiding brain rot

[morganm] The website you linked, yes. You yourself are still welcome, but it seems worth to explain what this group is about and what is intended for discussion here

node1 ok
#
[morganm] Some people here run commercial websites or sell stuff or services but that's very much a secondary thing and very limited in scope in terms of what's discussed here. Being very honest and transparent, people want to know who they are dealing with first before promoting anything related to that at all, and you are newer here. I encourage you to keep working on your website and consider a less business focused approach including getting rid of

cupparex [morganm]: I'd like to ask you about your comment on the GDPR compliance popup. I have that on my personal blog, my online identity. What is it about that popup that scares you away? It is a requirement if you deal with visitors from EU. While I understand the above site doesn't fit with a personal or online idenity blog, I don't understand the problem with gdpr compliance.
#
[artlung] I suspect morgan's opinion may not be unanimous. But I will say on the computelabs site there is a "Deny all" button that in Safari, when I click it I am prompted to answer again. This doesn't seem to match the spirit or of GDPR regulation. As to personal sites with cookies and cookie/privacy/security disclosure, that's not at odds with indieweb values to my way of thinking.
#
cupparex [artlung]: ok, thank you with your thoughts. as a newcomer to this space, I was curious if this was against the community. I try hard to keep up with compliance and accessibility to the best of my ability. I just tested mine and it allows for clicking the x to take the box off an choosing deny all, as well as to customize preferences.

#
cupparex Thanks for weighing in @tantek I can completely understand that viewpoint (I only put analytics on my site a couple days ago because I was curious about traffic as I build my blog). I am coming from an internet marketing background, so the GDPR compliance was put on there when I was using the domain for a more professional purpose. (But something never felt right about having my name blog be a professional hub instead of my online

[morganm] I definitely didn't mean to sound too harsh -- cookies can be just fine - this was responding to a business website apparently seeking to find customers

[morganm] I guess it's a dev discussion but I've had such mixed experiences implementing cookie banners. I like a web component approach to keep it separate and able to be easily removed or experienced with
#
[morganm] Personal websites are a great place to experiment with cookies and banners and compliance
#
cupparex [morganm]: I totally understood the reaction that site, but as a newcomer here, who has every intention of attempting to stay within the ethos of the community and who has spent a lot of time reading about and learning about the community, I just wanted to understand what the general view is. My blog is a personal blog. I may at some point list my professional projects on a page once I decide where I'm heading with that, it's not th
