valerieflynn Greetings from Colorado, USA. I'm an author, podcaster and learner. I found out about IndieWeb via Chris Aldrich's website by way of shared commonplacing interest.
#
valerieflynn I'm just in the learning phase now and I have my own websites.
#
valerieflynn Curious if there was any links to the "Domain of One's Own" concept/movement.
#
valerieflynn I think it's very cool what you guys are doing.

chrisaldrich Welcome valerieflynn 👋
#
valerieflynn Thank you tantek_com[d] & capjamesg[d] for the warm welcome.
#
valerieflynn That's a great wiki on Domain of One's Own. Thank you for that link, check out few of the links on the page too.
#
valerieflynn I'm curious does anyone in IndieWeb work on helping seniors or Gen X work on setting up their Domain of One's Own? I saw the great resources available on IW getting started page, but wasn't sure if there was more or different members were actively working to help the elderly?

#
chrisaldrich what is getting started?
#
Loqi 🌱 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/Getting_started
#
valerieflynn Thank you chrisaldrich[d] ! It's because of you and your kindness over on Reddit I'm here. Your website is very impressive!
#
chrisaldrich Thanks. Mostly it's a result of small, incremental changes over time.
#
chrisaldrich What is a commonplace book?
#
Loqi 📓 A commonplace book (or commonplaces) are a way to compile and store knowledge, usually by writing information into books, notebooks, card catalogs, or in more modern settings on one's own website https://indieweb.org/commonplace_book
#
chrisaldrich I often find that it's not so much age that is a differentiator for getting on the IndieWeb, but level of technical ability, and the amount of time one has to potentially donate to it.
#
chrisaldrich Do you have your own site valerieflynn?

#
valerieflynn Yes, I have multiple websites, one is my own domain of my personal name.
#

#
chrisaldrich have you tinkered around in the /DoOO space in the past?
#
valerieflynn Technically not in collage, I spent the 90s onwards creating websites for my Dad and my family when he was alive. I have had reseller hosting for quite a few decades, the host has changed over the years. So I kinda had our own Domain space for 30+ years. Still learning new stuff all the time.
#
valerieflynn So I was doing it, not knowing what it was called.
#
valerieflynn LOL, yep!
#
chrisaldrich I don't think that Jim Groom or Martha Burtis turned Domain of One's Own into a marketing thing until sometime after 2006 when the blogosphere was already in full swing.

#
valerieflynn Huh. Interesting. Never thought of it as a marketing thing.
#
valerieflynn So , I'm thinking of turning my podcast website into an Digital Garden/online Commonplace book. But I'm not that system/organizationally wired.
#
valerieflynn I do need to reread the WordPress index link you shared on Reddit. But what were some of the evolution of figuring out what worked for you?

[KevinMarks] They think because it's called a meta description it's Meta's job to fill it in.
