Has anyone ever posted IRC chat to their website? I've been discussing Drupal/iCalendar over in #dev, and thought maybe I should write up my problems. One easy way is to just paste my IRC comments.
#
btrem
I could own my own IRC chat! :-D

s/chat/chatter

I got a not insignificant way through implementing that idea and then ultimately decided against it

I think people appreciate some impermanence and also context? Nothing wrong with taking the content and reworking it imo but somehow lifting direct from a chat misses some context
#
[morgan]
I think it could be cool if you had headings that were styled like IRC chat in a blog post, and then had like blog commentary beneath it potentially. just my 2c

[morgan]: Good points. I was thinking an intro for context. Then the irc chat excerpts. I'd have to get permission if I wanted to include other contributions, e.g., questions posed to me, replies, etc.
#
aaronpk
I guess it's like the difference between reading a transcript of what someone says out loud vs reading something they wrote
#
btrem
gRegor: One step ahead of you. I went there for ideas on markup. :-)
#
btrem
aaronpk: I suppose. But chat is sort of like half-way between talking and writing, isn't it?
#
gRegor
I think a prose description of the issue and maybe summary of the others responding is probably more approachable for a reader. Can always link to the start of the chat logs if people want to read the full context
#
btrem
Aww, but it's really fun doing search/replace in my editor, turning chat into markup!
#
Loqi
hey btrem, that's a lot of dev jargon! markup... can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#
btrem
I knew that was coming. :-D Jeez. One word. *One* word. Ok, Loqi. Sorry to offend.

http://chat.indieweb.org is already marked up with microformats
#
[KevinMarks]2
so you could copy the html from there
#
btrem
Oh ffs. Why didn't I think of that? I've just been adding microformats to the markup copied from my chat client. :-D
#
btrem
Oh, that's brutal, that is.
#
btrem
TIL the chat archives have a form to change the time zone. Only available with javascript enabled, and I normally browse with it disabled. In fact, I only learned because I was copying the source code. Ha!
#
aaronpk
yes, javascript was the compromise for not using cookies
#
Loqi
btrem aaronpk: we try to keep jargon (JavaScript) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?

Do you guys think I should include webrings or badges on quietportal.com? It's starting to look kinda like a corporationish saas thing now, so maybe it would feel a bit too impersonal or like an imposition.

I want to agree, but nobody is really using it. Maybe the idea was a mismatch for what people want. most people moving away from big platforms probably already have the tools they need.
#
stillawakeat3am
I'm considering adding "portal packs", where people can make a custom list of websites they like to share with others, and the RSS update feature works on the pack, but again, not sure who will use it.
#
stillawakeat3am
I'll give this some more thought. If anyone here has ideas for how to make the site more useful, please let me know!

stillwakeat3am: i feel that adding a nice way to search via a search engine would be enough to convince me to make it my start page
#
stillawakeat3am
good idea. I'll do some reading and see if I can. quick question, which part of the interface do you feel would be the best place for it (not sure if you are on desktop or mobile)?
