[morgan] Im no help when it comes to emacs, or particularly any workflow relating to a phone as blogging still feels very much a desktop activity for me
#
[morgan] the main thing I can say is that I really, really like having a Sync'd obsidian on my phone with my desktop. I write and add notes like I described above, and then eventually it makes the migration across a chasm in the desert or something like that into my code editor
#
[morgan] Definitely consider having a sync'd setup, there are potentially a lot of options, honestly its just a nice feeling when you can keep the versions in sync of your notes and raw material, it just feels good, like tech should occasionally actually make one feel good hah
#
[KevinMarks] Talking of feed readers, I find it fascinating that atproto is fulfilling the TimBL dream of usimg your own store for app data and settings https://www.disnetdev.com/blog/2026-01-20-skyreader-a-rss-reader-on-the-at-protocol/

Loqi private posts refer to posts or portions of posts which are private to either the author or sometimes to a limited audience chosen or previously approved by the author (like close friends), the latter also known as a friends-only or protected post https://indieweb.org/private_posts
#
Loqi "journal" and "journaling" are words with multiple shades of IndieWeb meaning related to writing, both public and private, blogging and note-taking https://indieweb.org/journaling

[morgan] I mentioned obsidian before, I really like it because it adds some linking and graph functionality that gives a different kind of structure possible to the notes
#
[morgan] Im feeling very zen today and want to say "be free, release your expectations" hah. I dont have any consistentcy to anything I do and basically choose the simplest and 'dumbest' tools for everything

[morgan] I have an extensive paper journalling practice and like a particular brand of notebook, I have notebooks organized by approximately series of months from 2017-2024, with a lot of coding related stuff and diagrams and daily standup notes and stuff. Its a real memory refresher to occasionally look into them, its bad for reference generally but just its an artifact of how much work Ive done and that feels good. in my work I find it was a good
#
[morgan] release of energy to put things into notebooks. I usually have one notebook on the go / nearby. Im not special or unique but I basically write like a thousand words a day, into journals, notebooks, slacks, signal, obsidian... If I dont I feel Im not doing something I like?

#
[morgan] It feels like a constant gentle balancing act writing more into journals versus communication direct with friends versus occasional more public facing things. part of the rich tapestry of life. Also why I appreciate IndieWebCamp, it basically provides some good principles to balance a lot of stuff in this online world

aspizu thoughts?
#
aspizu (i still don't own that domain, so i might change that bit of the HTML code)
#
[morgan] @aspizu that reads like a pretty genuine human statement to me + has basically my favored rendition of the button. Im actually interested in one that goes even a little simpler like the Ban Sparkles icon and larger text that just says "FREE" like Smokefree basically, just like it doesnt need to even say 100% human, just like no gen ai was used

IWDiscord <aspizu>
#
[morgan] like I think its really subtle and powerful to directly riff on the sparkles icon for the meaning. All the companies are jamming the sparkles into all the apps to mean the thing, just flip it back
#
[KevinMarks] so the feed reader stores the subscriptions in my PDS and renders them in the browser https://atproto-browser.vercel.app/at/did:plc:kn4dz4f67maytvsbcnbry36k/app.skyreader.feed.subscription/mknd8qisdtqu4o

[jeremycherfas] @ulhar4409 For my main site, I have a template with bare minimum general front matter. I write away in Markdown, maybe come back later, and do a first proofread in Marked2. Then I have a script that generates a slug from the post title, creates a folder named $slug and moves the draft there. If I have images, I resize them and move them the $slug. Then I insert the code for the images. Final proofread in Marked2, change tags and published
#
[jeremycherfas] state if needed and upload.

[Al_Abut] [aciccarello] catching up on the Threads talk: it's a pretty insular community with a totally different vibe than masto/bsky/various twitter clones, but can be occasionally really worth it, especially for anything visual.
#
[Al_Abut] I usually cross-post there and particularly like how it does videos, like this one I took of a recent sunset:

[social] I turned off unread counts and notifications from most social apps

[artlung] Speaking of silos, Threads is rolling out ads. File under: _no happy user on this app wants this_. https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/21/threads-rolls-out-ads-to-all-users-worldwide/
#
[social] Thank you for a wonderful Homebrew session [capjamesg]++
#
[social] There once was a time when social platforms tried to do the right thing for their social platforms and allow for respecting user’s needs and desires rather than leaning into dark patterns.
#
[aciccarello] The advertisers are the real customers 😢
#
failxontour I got lost in Threads Silo for a couple of months in the addictive loop checking it each day as well someone probably would have when they first discovered facebook. I'm glad I opted out of that one now it's Twitter 2.0 from my experience in the good and bad ways.
#
failxontour for me well that has bad mental health this was hellfire you constantly opt for pointless discussions going back and fourth trying to reitarrate your original standpoint if you did not within the 1/3 top of comments you get abolished, canceled it's far from good. While I definitly liked the poltical climate I got presented on my feed more left-winged liberal it became more and more apparent that
#
failxontour the people on my feed got more extreme and obscure.
#
failxontour Well as is with all the bigger social silos the case. When you throw in a bunch of crazy folks into the mix.

[morgan] My experience of moving countries/overseas has had a big part of my sort of decades long experiences at times with social media. Something about the initial concept really hooked into my desire to keep up my networks with people in my origin/other culture. But basically at my age now Im ready to just sort of let go and let things stay connected if they really are valuable
#
[morgan] That damn linkedin notification icon while logged out would tap into thoughts like "What about some of my university classmates, maybe someone wants to get in contact who has no other contact means" and then everytime you actually log in its spam

failxontour FOMO and loosing connection are essential stoneage thoughts that kept us alive but that also affect our behavior on the web today. I can totally relate to that. But that's why I find maintaining your onw personal website is important too so you can share and really find confidence in your personal thoughts. Being controlled by fears and instincs is not what the web should be about rather about
#
failxontour personal expression how one might view that or express that is up to them right.
#
[morgan] Right on, definitely agree with that! Ive basically focused my personal website between two domains since 2018. The main thing thats changed over time in my time being a website hobbyist is how I approach the focus and engagement of the website and trying to do kinda two competing things which is making it more valuable for certain things in life and also reduce admintax and avoid all the kinda dark pattern stuff thats out there like above
#
[morgan] discussed some today 🙂

extinct61 Interestingly, the biggest drain on my mental health in the last couple of years has been reddit, which is not thought of as social media per se. I wish I had given it up years ago. There is just so much toxicity there. Everyone there is always on edge and ready to be as negative as possible.
#
extinct61 I have found that the bigger a platform gets, the less value you get out of it. I have been much happier with shifting my social media use to bluesky and a few small discord servers.

aspizu extinct61[d]: hey, lately I too have realized how much reddit (and surprisingly twitter) has been contributing to degrading my mental health. I went ahead and unsubscribed from all the negative sub-reddits, and I have a script that disable mindless-scrolling on reddit, while allowing you to use view reddit posts from google search.

Loqi 📔 A note is a post that is typically short unstructured* plain text, written & posted quickly, that has its own permalink page https://indieweb.org/notes
