i might use "slips" but haven't fully decided on it
#
[tantek]
what is a status update
#
Loqi
📔 A note is a post that is typically short unstructured* plain text, written & posted quickly, that has its own permalink page https://indieweb.org/status_update
#
ulhar4409
i want to save "notes" for anything closer to how I'd use a notebook i think (or, alternatively, anything involving my friend Note 🐱)

[aciccarello]
I didn't see a section on that page about the naming of notes but I thought we had something
#
[aciccarello]
It comes up often enough
#
[tantek]
it does?
#
[tantek]
what is a toot
#
Loqi
toot was a humorous term for a note post in Mastodon that had its origins in a 2008 Twitter joke by Merlin Mann, suggested for adoption in Mastodon by Hbomberguy & officially adopted by Mastodon into its user experience in 2016, and finally removed in 2021 https://indieweb.org/toot
#
[tantek]
what is a tweet
#
Loqi
A tweet is a note (or reply) posted on Twitter https://indieweb.org/tweet
#
[aciccarello]
What are thoughts?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "thoughts" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "thoughts is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[aciccarello]
I know I've seen that too
#
[tantek]
what are deep thoughts?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "deep thoughts" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "deep thoughts is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
ulhar4409
i forgot about toots
#
[tantek]
what are skeets?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "skeets" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "skeets is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[aciccarello]
Justin Searls uses (🔥) takes 😆
#
ulhar4409
if i call them "slips" i could frame it as a song quote ~~although a singular word probably doesn't count~~
#
[tantek]
certainly if they were Freudian
#
trwnh
i try to use the language closest to the content model, so for my indieweb-adjacent bits i'm thinking about "entries" for both shortform and longform. what i do after that is create "feeds" using hugo taxonomies (kind of like categories). an entry can belong to zero or more feeds.
#
trwnh
i don't actually find the difference between "post kinds" to make much sense to me, it's rather arbitrary imo
#
trwnh
what is stream of consciousness
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "stream of consciousness" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "stream of consciousness is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
trwnh
what is monologue
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "monologue" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "monologue is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
trwnh
yeah i didn't think there would be pages for those xD
#
gRegor
what is ptd
#
Loqi
Post Type Discovery specifies an algorithm for consuming code to determine the type of a post by its content properties and their values rather than an explicit “post type” property, thus better matched to modern post creation UIs that allow combining text, media, etc in a variety of ways without burdening users with any notion of what kind of post they are creating https://indieweb.org/PTD
#
gRegor
It mostly matters for that, in my experience ^
#
gRegor
monologue could be /tweetstorm, haha
#
trwnh
some other words that might strike your fancy: brief, transient, fleeting, ephemeral, short, snippet, log
#
trwnh
shortform *text* vs shortform *video* is, well... it's up to you if you wanna disambiguate there
#
[tantek]
trwnh, explicit post types/kinds are primarily there because of AS explicit object/activity types
#
[tantek]
There was deliberate explicit harmonization
#
ulhar4409
right now my micropub server just tosses everything in (data)/posts/
#
ulhar4409
well, "everything" being posts
#
[tantek]
And you're right they're rather arbitrary and reflect a state of the social media world circa 2008 when AS1 was designed
#
ulhar4409
[tantek]: AS?
#
gRegor
what is activitystreams
#
Loqi
ActivityStreams (AKA AS) is a standardization effort to define common types of objects and actions (verbs) taken on various social media sites that eventually produced Activity Streams 2.0 https://indieweb.org/ActivityStreams
#
trwnh
well i don't agree with the AS types being Note and Article either lol. they're all html-style <article> to me
#
[tantek]
lol well that's why we have them
#
trwnh
i get the sort of desire to differentiate between "twitter" and "medium"/"blogger" but eh
#
gRegor
storage can be separate from post types (also Loqi might nudge depending on terms here haha)
#
[tantek]
trwnh and this why in practice I've ended up posting mostly notes even long ones with paragraphs
#
ulhar4409
maybe "posting with longform intent" gets its own category instead
#
trwnh
more in the sense of what a person sees in whatever reader they're using -- it makes sense why ptd arrived at *gestures vaguely* that, but you could also have a reader that just shows you entries
#
Loqi
hey ulhar4409 trwnh: it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (Micropub, PTD)
#
trwnh
trying not to talk about the actual thing accidentally triggered the thing. ah well...
#
gRegor
wipes off the chalkboard and writes a "0"
#
gRegor
no worries
#
trwnh
i think in practice i use my feed reader to just read entries, and i don't care too much about what kind of entries they are, but having features to filter does make sense
#
trwnh
inoreader is fairly good at that
#
trwnh
(i wish it could fetch "full" content for feeds which only include partial content...)
#
trwnh
they do display title-less entries more like social media posts though
#
ulhar4409
My posting is probably going to be (in order of frequency) a), microblogging, b) art, c) long-form posts
#
trwnh
and yes ulhar4409 i would generally recommend just making a feed for categorizing specific entries if you can -- you can make feeds for types if you really want to
#
trwnh
it is in fact not a technological issue but hardest problem number 1, naming things
#
ulhar4409
B and C will have titles usually, so the URL picker could use that for a slug
#
trwnh
as long as you understand your own naming scheme, and as long as your audience can understand it, it's probably good enough
#
trwnh
(lots of churn in my naming scheme, trying to figure out which bits are stable and which ones aren't is hard!)
#
trwnh
even just taking notes as plain text files
#
ulhar4409
oh there's also "reposts" and social interaction stuff
#
trwnh
reposts are still posts imo. i call them "shares"
#
trwnh
what are shares
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "shares" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "shares is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
trwnh
uhhhh would that be /share (which probably links to /repost)
#
gRegor
what is share
#
Loqi
share is a watered down verb that's used on the "social web" (and other platforms like Google's Android) to mean pretty much any action https://indieweb.org/share
#
[tantek]
Ya share as a term is way too overloaded to be useful as a specific term among a set of terms
#
[tantek]
AS has an even more obscure term for a repost
#
[tantek]
What is a boost
#
Loqi
♺ A repost on the indieweb is a post that is purely a 100% re-publication of another (typically someone else’s) post. The act of reposting is an umbrella term that covers the general practice of republishing another post typically on the same service or silo, and sometimes across sites https://indieweb.org/boost
#
trwnh
that's a mastodon-ism actually
#
trwnh
or, rather, people on tumblr used the term "signal boost" for their "reblog" and gargron thought "boost" sounded okay
#
[tantek]
Oh yeah sorry that was a no sequitor
#
trwnh
you may be thinking of Announce
#
[tantek]
I don't remember the AS term for repost
#
[tantek]
Yes that may be it
#
[tantek]
Like that's not what announce means lol
#
trwnh
it sounds very formal haha. "i have an announcement to make. this thing exists. please look at it, maybe"
#
[tantek]
People announce things all the time that have nothing to do with what someone else said
#
[tantek]
Should have just called it a shoutout
#
trwnh
i believe gnu social / pleroma used "repeats"
#
trwnh
repeat, announce, share, reshare, repost, ...
#
trwnh
reblog, renote, re-wahtever
#
[tantek]
We need a Genz lexicon. Dislike can be skibidi
#
trwnh
s/wahtever/whatever
#
ulhar4409
i also want to maintain a place for art for/featuring me, but not necessarily by me; might be good for friendgroup site though
#
trwnh
"make sure to like and subscribe" -> "make sure to rizz and skibidi"

What are appearances
#
Loqi
appearances is a page on some IndieWeb sites that lists external pages and media that mention or include the author or something they created in some form, by name, image or other likeness, an interview or quotes therefrom, photos or other media by the author perhaps as part of larger piece of content such as a news article https://indieweb.org/appearances

I often see these kinds of debates as the beauty of the indieweb, not just compared to silos but also to other decentralized social networks where you're still limited by the network, or your instance, etc
#
[snarfed]
everyone here gets to decide for themselves whether their site doesn't show any responses/comments/webmentions, or only wms, or only native comments, or everything but silos (via Bridgy), or also silos, or some manually curated subset of those, or anything else!

[snarfed] totally. And not so much a debate as me thinking through and puzzling it out aloud, even if it's a convo you've heard a thousand times before. Comments without moderation is a form of hell, which I called Tragedy Of The Comments at least 20 years ago. Webmentions can have an approval loop before being shown - a Letters To The Editor mode

I have a loose approval system. First time comments need my approval before they show up, but once they have at least one approved comment, subsequent comments are approved.
#
[tantek]
[Al_Abut] curious how/why you see/feel a difference between showing replies on your posts on your personal site vs showing replies on your posts on a silo. Silos don't have "approval before being shown" so why do you feel you must have that for your personal site?
#
[tantek]
(like genuinely curious about your reflections / insights here, not trying to be snarky)
#
[snarfed]
silo reply controls have definitely developed a fair amount! a number of them do now give you much finer grained control, both for who can reply and for removing individual replies. I don't know of any that have approve-before-display style moderation queues though
#
[tantek]
what is moderation
#
Loqi
Moderation is the process of holding comments for review by a human, and sometimes a source of frustration when a comment is written on another site that the commenter has no control over, and thus a good reason to post a reply on your own site and POSSE it to that other site https://indieweb.org/moderation
#
[artlung]
YouTube channels have two settings (overridable on individual videos). Comments can be "on" with moderation set to "Hold All" which would be a moderation queue.
#
[artlung]
(Have not tried that)
#
[snarfed]
[artlung] re why (I) bridge, thanks for asking! I don't have a particularly deep or insightful motivation, mostly just the usual indieweb motivations: wanting to own my own presence online, preserving the conversation around my posts, etc. https://snarfed.org/2012-07-25_why_i_have_my_own_web_site
#
[artlung]
YouTube also has checkable setting for "Hold comments with hashtags and URLs for review" and settings for moderation that are "basic" and "strict" which moderate comments based on black box evaluation by YT on suitability/explicitness/content.
#
[snarfed]
oh interesting
#
[artlung]
Given the volume of comments some posts get, they are incentivized to provide some tools. 3 month old Taylor Swift video for _Fate of Ophelia_ has 117,861 comments.
#
[artlung]
Gangnam Style has 5.4 million comments.
#
[artlung]
So, comments are doing some *other* kind of thing there, right. GS is 13 years old, and still open to comments.
#
[artlung]
Any general theory of comments, moderation, interaction, community ought to be able carve out what the hell is going on in that set of responses.
#
[tantek]
maybe. or maybe on the smaller scale of typical indieweb sites we can procrastinate on mass celebrity use-cases
#
[tantek]
I think we have a page on most responses somewhere
#
[artlung]
What the hell is a comment and why? is a very rich subject. we get into reactji, hearts, bookmarks, GIF replies, reposts, etc. It's all happening on the indieweb, 🙂
#
[artlung]
so if I were Taylor Swift, and I wanted to "preserve that conversation" to my own site, PESOS them, could I?
#
[tantek]
Taylor Swift can pay a team of people to figure that out
#
[tantek]
or presumably call up Mullenweg and say hey can Wordpress handle this? and make Automattic solve the problem for her 🙂
#
[artlung]
Mind you tantek, I'm not expecting our wiki to answer all my technosociological questions
#
[tantek]
I'm not really worried about the problems of rich people for our use-cases, to be blunt
#
[artlung]
A person with a million comments on their youtube video need not be rich
#
[tantek]
and I think it's a distraction to attempt that degree of a 0.0001% solution
#
[artlung]
No no no, you mistake my intent entirely
#
[artlung]
I'm saying "how do we think about comments" already today we've got back and forth with a wide range of how folks approach
#
[tantek]
maybe a fun coffee/beer topic but not of much practical matter to folks here tbh
#
[tantek]

I think it only takes a little minute of chill reflecting on the word "viral" itself to really ask oneself if this is a thing you actually want
#
[Al_Abut]
@morgan fun fact - people use the word “viral” wrong
#
[Al_Abut]
Or more like a grammar nitpick. They really just mean “popular”
#
[Al_Abut]
The original use of viral was meant for a class of apps where the act of using the app made other non-users aware of the app. Hotmail was the first one.
#
[Al_Abut]
Because they popularized putting the email client in the signature. So a Hotmail email user made other non-Hotmail users aware of its existence. Same for “sent from my iPhone” in early iOS.
#
[Al_Abut]
E-vite was an other clever one
#
[Al_Abut]
I'm trying to think of a modern example of a truly viral app…
#
[Al_Abut]
[tantek] great question! I hold my site to a higher standard for replies than I do for social media for several reasons:
#
[Al_Abut]
1) precisely because I can curate on my site in ways that I can't elsewhere, so it's a good balance. One less place I have to worry about randos.
#
[Al_Abut]
#
[Al_Abut]
2) It's *my* site, so I feel a sense of ownership about my personal sandbox and want to express a clarity of thought. It's a place I want to look nice and be focused because I'm inviting others to my space to hear me out at length, so it's a “my house, my rules” vibe. As opposed to accepting that social media is like going to a shared 3rd space for group conversation.
#
[Al_Abut]
3) and lastly, but probably most importantly and least applicable to most people - my site does double duty as both a personal space and also a professional one.
#
[Al_Abut]
* most importantly to me
#
[morgan]
That makes a lot of sense, about the original usage of the word viral. It seems to have evolved, or mutated, in common usage to mean "hey someone discovered this and put it somewhere it gained some traction usually with bad faith involved somehow"

does linking posts from silos count as "user makes other non-users aware of an app" ?
#
[morgan]
Thats an interesting one because it feels very contextual somehow. Like its different being like "Hey, sorry for the instagram link, heres a potentially still awesome video that I dont see hosted anywhere else" to like "hey heres a link to some website youve never really heard of before asking you to log in or sign up" kinda things
#
ulhar4409
hmm true
#
[Al_Abut]
@ulhar4409 probably not, because it's an added extra thing you're doing to make others aware of another thing.
#
[Al_Abut]
E.g. if using a silo app meant new posts went out to new non-silo users then yes, by definition it would be.
#
[Al_Abut]
It's another dividing line between media vs something more interactive. Watching youtube doesn't make others aware of youtube.
#
[Al_Abut]
The closest thing I can think of in my life is making maps for group bike rides?
#
[Al_Abut]

#

The use of the term viral for online behaviors I believe comes from the memetic virality meaning
#
[artlung]
nobody has mentioned the 50 year history of computer viruses (and worms). there's a whole history of the term in fiction then in reality as the internet grew.
#
[KevinMarks]
I have a wbole seried of posts on that on my http://epeus.blogspot.com blog

Genetic memes is definitely another way to interpret it, but the loss of the hard-nosed technical definition is the one I was bemoaning
#
[Al_Abut]
There's a nice chapter on it in Founders At Work interviewing the creator of Hotmail as the OG viral app
