CrowderSoup Working on a new thing inspired by the caw pages: https://crowdersoup.com/blog/post/indieweb-ink/
#
Loqi [preview] [Aaron Crowder] Earlier today I made a caw page that was a coloring page of a raven that you could download to share on your own website.
Building that inspired me to build something...
IndieWeb.ink
This is a screenshoot of a test I did of indieweb.ink. It's a new #... https://crowdersoup-blog.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/image/2026/02/83fb056a-b4d6-4db3-ba6d-c2e0ef5b7bd9.png

CrowderSoup That’s just my local testing UI that I use for fun lol

CrowderSoup capjamesg: thanks! I'm excited to launch it. I want to give myself time to make sure there's not any glaring major bugs. Plus, if I wait to launch it my girlfriend will have time to create the first coloring page for us!

AnaOlivia Thank you tantek for your comment :]
#
AnaOlivia Im not sure why my post published twice. I tried to remove the one where the hyperlink does not work and it is still live.
#
AnaOlivia Thank you much, capn' !
#
theboeh Any recommendations for an RSS reader?
#
rgbivvv When I was on Fedora (GNOME), I really really liked newsflash
#
rgbivvv But now I'm on mac and I can't find anything as good
#
rgbivvv So I'm going to try to build my own in Rust
#
deathcomestotime i used to use freshrss, didnt have issues with it
#
capjamesg theboeh[d] If you're okay with one that only updates once per day, I run https://artemis.jamesg.blog/ for free (invite code "coffee").

theboeh yeah, that's one that I haven't tried and will definitely check out. Thanks!
#
fnhipster_ I've been using Reeder as an RSS reader. I ended up paying the premium version so I can post liked post directly on my site using their public JSON feed.
#
fnhipster_ I believe Reeder is only for mac and ios
#
theboeh rgbivvv: ^
#
fnhipster_ [edit] I've been using Reeder (https://reederapp.com/) as an RSS reader. I ended up paying for the premium version so I can post liked posts directly on my site using their public JSON feed.
#
fnhipster_ Loqi let loose. It's Friday 😛
#
theboeh Understood, apologies, I'll re-calibrate what I call tech, no worries

#
fnhipster_ that's ok. it's a fine line.
#
bubbybumble weird rule IMO, but has there been an issue with people getting intimidated by acronyms?
#
fnhipster_ for somebody who is new to indieweb, where should I start? what can I do? 🙂
#
bubbybumble hard for me to answer without jargon but for a specific tool, maybe check out hugo
#
bubbybumble also I call shenanigans isnt your site that one with the ascii livestream?
#
fnhipster_ me? yes
#
fnhipster_ 👍
#
bubbybumble capjamesg[d]: ok, it makes sense to keep the channels on topic
cotsuka joined the channel
#
fnhipster_ bubbybumble[d]: I didn't mean how to create a site. I mean, how can I contribute to the community? posts? etc
[marksuth] joined the channel
#
theboeh Yeah my thought was, that most indieweb sites have an RSS feed so I bet those guys/gals/pals would have some good recommendations.
#
bubbybumble carlos, on your site I wonder if you could set up an audio broadcast from your turntable since you have a fairly extensive vinyl collection. still might not be what your asking
#
fnhipster_ I thought about it. I'd love to stream what I'm playing. I also got concerned with copyrights, etc 🙁
#
Loqi 🌱 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started
#
bubbybumble I am new here too, I'm not too sure either but RSS might be place to start based on what that is
#
fnhipster_ capjamesg[d]: thanks
#
fnhipster_ sounds good! I wanna write a blog post about the community and link. I thought I saw a webring. I want to check that out.

#
Loqi 🕸💍 Indiewebring is a webring across IndieWeb sites and blogs, part of the great rebirth of of webrings powered by #IndieWeb technology that made 2018 the year of the webring https://indieweb.org/IndieWeb_Webring
#
bubbybumble I am not sure what else to do with my site, maybe I will add a place to download music for free and skip the bandcamp links. I am wondering about making music all royalty free, but reserving the specific right to sell it in its primary music form (so allowing people to use it in videos or games or art projects, but not sell it as a standalone music track)

#
bubbybumble webring is a good idea
#
fnhipster_ I've been going around IRC servers lately. I remember the time when sites had chats, and I thought: what about a chat plugin that websites could embed and theme that connects to IndieWeb? Like a way to connect visitors from personal sites to a shared chat room with the same community? A syndicated chat.
#
deathcomestotime fnhipster how do you do your ascii stream? it's so cool
#
fnhipster_ I'll answer in #indieweb-dev 😉
#
[tantek] For whoever asked, the answer is yes, people have seen the technical talk or focus on technical terms, jargon, in the main channel and been intimidated or felt discouraged from joining because that's not what they want to focus on. They want to focus on the actual personal, human, user benefits of being independent on the web. None of that depends on specific technology, or technophilia, or making technology your hobby. Hence we encourage those
#
[tantek] I just saw a blog post the other day that characterized IndieWeb as being focused on the technical, standards, protocols, and whenever this kind of chat comes up here, that reinforces that misimpression. So we nudge it, encourage it to move to #indieweb-dev because that's not the point of IndieWeb at all.

CrowderSoup That's something I think is easy to forget, IndieWeb is about the people not the tech (though the tech _is_ important)

#
bubbybumble [tantek]: I get that, it just seems like an inherently technical thing to do, with some options available to avoid that kind of stuff. I get it though, if that's how we do things here it's fine with me I just wasn't expecting it
#
bubbybumble now that I think about it, maybe linux would benefit if some of their channels took a similar approach...
#
theboeh on god (am I allowed to say that? I'm and old)

#
bubbybumble your pfp looks below the threshold lol
#
bubbybumble i think its legal still
#
fnhipster_ I'm curious about what conversations work best in this channel. I understand IndieWeb is all about folks building personal sites, which can get technical at times, and I appreciate that there are dedicated channels for deeper dives.
#
fnhipster_ I'm pretty new here and still learning the rhythm of the space. Would love to understand which topics and discussions tend to thrive here. It'd help me (and maybe other newcomers) contribute in ways that add value to the community.
#
fnhipster_ I'm getting the sense this might be more of a general/lobby space, but I've also noticed that when newcomers ask questions, they're often pointed to the bot or wiki. I wonder if there's a way to balance that with more direct community engagement? Some of the warmest communities I've experienced find ways to welcome questions while still keeping conversations manageable and going.

#
bubbybumble this channel seems like what you were asking earlier, the end result and features to add and high-level concepts rather than the nitty gritty
#
fnhipster_ In instance. We've been chatting about the importance of inclusiveness by avoiding overly technical topics... but it started from a simple, generic question about RSS reader recommendations.
#
bubbybumble yeah lol, and I didnt know what that was so I looked it up, so I am glad I was exposed to an acronym like that. but I get it's about building perception to people. same thing with linux, the perception of it being a technical thing done by meganerds has done damage to it
#
bubbybumble IDK though, with linux for example and using the terminal I tell people I know "it's just like using minecraft commands" and it makes it way more accessible that way, I guess the technical stuff of making websites is a lot harder to do that with though
#
fnhipster_ I think the most inclusive community are those that are open and eager to answer and teach
#
capjamesg fnhipster_[d] This channel is ideal for any non-technical web talk, for example: things you're doing on your website (i.e. new pages you're adding, experiments with different content types), sharing ideas for things you'd like to see in the indie web, discussions about podcasts / events / other things that have mentioned the indie web, etc.
#
bubbybumble speaking of which, I'd love ideas for what to add that is music related to my site. But I feel it has most of the components I sought out to add. Maybe I can set up the webring
#
bubbybumble an audio visualizer page would be interesting...
#
bubbybumble I made a post as to gear I use
#
bubbybumble or the keyboard and why I picked it
#
bubbybumble I could make one about software as well
#
fnhipster_ understood. thanks.
#
bubbybumble is it considered indieweb then to make content using, say, a cms?
#
bubbybumble like squarespace or something
#
bubbybumble what is cms
#
Loqi A content management system (often abbreviated as CMS) is software used to create, enter, edit, update, delete content on websites; some CMSs are used for IndieWeb sites, see the tables on this page for current usage https://indieweb.org/CMS
#
bubbybumble well that answers my question
#
bubbybumble i know thats jargon sorry but it's really the easy way of doing these things
#
bubbybumble I see, cool. I was under the impression even things like that were not considered part of the indie web but my mistake
#
bubbybumble bubbybumble[d]: wordpress I thought was the exception to this
#
Loqi 💬 Join #indieweb discussions via Discord, Slack, web chat, or IRC, (they are all bridged!) with focused channels for developers, events, meta topics, and WordPress! Please keep chats brief and relevant to the IndieWeb community https://indieweb.org/discuss
#
bubbybumble lol I didnt even notice that. thanks for the info, it is clear
#
bubbybumble for a class I had to learn wordpress and it was ironically a tricky part of that class for me haha
#
bubbybumble yes I understand haha, sorry I am not trying to be a contrarian
#
bubbybumble I like the ascii feed too, and I really like the trend of putting command line emulators in your website to navigate parts of it, it's creative
#
Loqi terminal green is both a specific shade of green (#4AF262) and a design aesthetic based on that or a similar bright green on black (usually monospace) text as a nod to 20th century (1970s) green phosphorous monochrome computer terminals, used on a few personal sites, and sometimes as a site theme, or a temporary blog theme https://indieweb.org/terminal_green
#
bubbybumble it has its own hex code?!??! I assumed if it did it would be only the green channelt (so like, #00FF00 or something, the 2 middle numbers being the G in RGB and F being the highest digit in hex)
#
bubbybumble I use a terminal a lot and I made mine light theme like an insane person. I have a lot of love for old builtin themes nobody uses in a program called vim that edits text in the terminal. they are suuuuper vibrant, almost eye bleeding but it's really a cool aesthetic to me now. not quite as far back as the original terminals.
#
bubbybumble ahh sorry I thought that would be ok
#
bubbybumble it's just a tool, specifics dont matter. old program that has funny colorschemes by today's standards that are so bright they feel like they would be the colors of a retro game or something, not a developer tool
#
bubbybumble here's what I assume is actually an indie site that has a screenshot of them https://justinjoyce.dev/every-built-in-vim-color-scheme-with-screenshots/
#
bubbybumble lol, it's like clippy if clippy was actually useful
#
bubbybumble interesting thought though, having a search engine on a website dedicated to a topic with no ulterior motives gives better results than the entire internet being searched does...
#
[Trevor_Morris] I've just added colours to the cURL response on my website. Locally I have it streaming, but that isn't working on production for some reason!
#
Loqi Moderation is the process of holding comments for review by a human, and sometimes a source of frustration when a comment is written on another site that the commenter has no control over, and thus a good reason to post a reply on your own site and POSSE it to that other site https://indieweb.org/moderation
#
bubbybumble [tantek]: I've seen that as options in browsers, interesting that it actually works a lot
#
bubbybumble too often I am searching for urls or sites though
