mblaney so (in PHP) dns_get_record requires following redirects but supports ipv6. gethostbyname will do the resolution for you but is ipv4 only.

mblaney I tried to find a better solution and found curl_getinfo does both of the above when requesting CURLINFO_PRIMARY_IP

mblaney but that basically means leaving the loopback test until after I've already curl'd the endpoint.
