Json is valid yaml
#
[kevinmarks]
Yaml is the union of all text markup
#
Zegnat
[kevinmarks], are you saying a JSON Feed is also a valid YAML Feed? That’s not good.
#
ben_thatmustbeme
Wait what? Really??
#
[kevinmarks]
“The primary objective of this revision is to bring YAML into compliance with JSON as an official subset.” http://www.yaml.org/spec/1.2/spec.html

Interesting. PHP’s scandir() will return a filename with :: when the actual filename on macOS contains //

Zegnat: The actual filename really does contain "::" at the OS level. The Finder and other UI components display ':' as '/' for backward compatibility with classic Mac OS.
#
Zegnat
I figured, jjuran. Also because you can’t enter a literal : in a filename.
#
Zegnat
A little counter intuitive imho, but manageable.

NeXTstep did the same trick to deal with HFS disks in the 90's.

my AWS bandwidth bill is getting quite large, anyone know how to track down what in particular is contributing to my bandwidth line item on my bill?
#
eli_oat
you can download usage reports
#
eli_oat
(disclaimer, I've never actually used AWS. I've only had to look it up for clients)
#
tantek
aaronpk: that is a VERY good FAQ to add to /AWS
#
tantek
or presumably /S3 ?
#
aaronpk
i'm not sure it's S3 actually
#
aaronpk
that's what i need to find out
#
aaronpk
it's just billed as "bandwidth"
#
tantek
then definitely /AWS#FAQ "bandwidth bill" or something
#
aaronpk
wow those reports are way too detailed

I know some folks run into gotchya's with IPs and AWS...I think it is cheaper to have a private IP than a public one, maybe? I can do some digging
#
aaronpk
ah i figured it out, it's bandwidth for Glacier
#
aaronpk
my private dropbox backs up to Glacier, which apparently is now 80gb/month going up to Glacier
#
aaronpk
going to disable that since i have an alternative backup service now
#
GWG
You have a private Dropbox? Which? Owncloud?
#
aaronpk
Synology
#
GWG
Oh, a NAS
#
tantek
what is Glacier
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Glacier" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
aaronpk
what is Amazon Glacier?

I've oggled many a synology. I'm running a home-grown raspberry pi with a heap of ancient HDs. It is rickity, noisey, but so far is working pretty well.
#
tantek
what is a synology?
#
Loqi
Synology is a company that makes storage products which allow installation of apps, and can be used as a home web server https://indieweb.org/Synology
#
GWG
I used to build my own. Then it died and I bought a cheap QNAP
#
GWG
I don't remember why I went QNAP over Synology at the time.
#
GWG
I do recall it was a weekend and I ran to the store.
#
aaronpk
i think QNAP is cheaper maybe
#
GWG
That isn't always a good thing. Haven't had a problem with it though

GWG https://syncthing.net/ + random linux box with lots of disk
#
GWG
I just installed Owncloud on the QNAP
#
petermolnar
by the way, the best home server is an old thinkpad with 2 hdds, eg. a T500
#
petermolnar
built-in ups, built-in gsm modem - alert in case of power failure - small, silent
#
GWG
I have one of those, an old R61.
#
GWG
But I'm fine right now
#
petermolnar
mine is running under a chest of drawers, it's quite hidden as well
#
petermolnar
syncs everything to a remote rented server
#
petermolnar
so that's backups at different geolocations
#
GWG
I'm setting up sync to S3 right now.
#
petermolnar
too expensive
#
GWG
Also, I have a secondary location that is online 8 months of the year, and an option for another one that is online 12 months of the year
