m_ott++ great thread there!

#

did that just happen or is this the cron job catching up with previously missing tweets?
#
tantek
some of it was a few days ago?
#
tantek
Hey KevinMarks here's a fragmention opportunity for you: https://twitter.com/m_ott/status/905738704253329409

@heydonworks @inclusicomps Sorry, no deeplinking yet, the paragraph starts with “The IndieWeb approach to collecting reactions…” ;)

"no deeplinking yet" - no need, just support fragmentions for all your posts :)
#
KartikPrabhu
ha! I had the same thought!
#
aaronpk
cool, tweet searches should be handled a lot better now
#
aaronpk
no more twitter canoes, and won't be truncated here either
#
aaronpk
that was bugging me for a while
#
aaronpk
hope i didn't break anything too bad
#
KartikPrabhu
not truncated now

AFAIK this is the "made for tech press" version of that PDF from EthanZ

"The projects we examined are pursuing deeply exciting new ideas. However, we doubt that decentralized systems alone will address the threats to free expression caused by today’s mega-platforms, for several key reasons."
#
tantek
see /to-do for the abovementioned PDF
#
aaronpk
"Tools like Diaspora and FreedomBox encountered difficulties attracting a permanent user base, and it’s likely new platforms will, too. "
#
tantek
"platforms" sigh
#
KartikPrabhu
what is platform?
#
Loqi
A platform in the context of software/services is a collection of related APIs/protocols/formats that can be used to build sites/apps, and sometimes misleadingly used to refer to apps themselves, or suites of apps, to exaggerate their sense of importance, value, or impact https://indieweb.org/platform
#
tantek
not every open source project is a "platform"
#
tantek
perfect example of such exaggeration
#
tantek
!tell kevinmarks if you'd like a recent article to fisk, this WIRED one is ripe for the picking https://www.wired.com/story/decentralized-social-networks-sound-great-too-bad-theyll-never-work/
#

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
aaronpk
"The reality is that most people do not want to run their own web servers or social network nodes. They want to engage with the web through friendlier platforms, and these platforms will be constrained by the same forces that drive consolidation today."
#

Given how much they're all gushing over Bitcoin fluff, that is a bit much
#

I suspect that headline isn't theirs tbh
#

right, pretty sure the publisher picks the headlines, not authors

#
aaronpk
whoa mile-by-mila
#
aaronpk
i dont know why i can't type today
#
tantek
wow according to a few Google searches / results, 250w/page is a common print metric for books.
#
tantek
so that would be a 24 page booklet (!!!)
#
tantek
(25 since I had nearly 6200 words)
#
tantek
and that's not counting the pages needed for the photos
#
aaronpk
you should totally turn it into a little zine!
#
tantek
that's crazy. I suppose I could try producing a print artifact
#
Loqi
I agree
#
tantek
POSSE to print
#
tantek
are there services that will do that on demand with permission of the author?
#
tantek
like could I put a "Print & Mail me" button on the blog post?
#
aaronpk
yeah! lulu.com and createspace.com will print regular soft or hardback books from a PDF!
#
tantek
no way I'm going to bother with any tooling for a PDF

tantek
PDF--
#
Loqi
pdf has -1 karma in this channel (-3 overall)
#
aaronpk
HTML -> PDF isn't bad
#
aaronpk
my whole book is an HTML file
#
tantek
right, I want the service to handle the HTML+CSS -> print, not me
#
tantek
that's why you pay a service to make intelligent design decisions / tweaks like that
#
tantek
printing a PDF is basically dumb robotic automation
#
tantek
they should handle things like tweaking type, leading, photo chroma etc.
#
@EthanZ
@kevinmarks Yeah, there's that too. We could only fit a few complains into the WIRED word count.
(twitter.com/_/status/907411389391818753)
#
tantek
what is the WIRED word count?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "WIRED word count" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
tantek
KevinMarks: is that like having to fit into the Twitter character count?
#
@EthanZ
@kevinmarks That's always a safe assumption. I have an AI that A/B tests clickbait until I offend everyone I am trying to reach.
(twitter.com/_/status/907412109021118465)
#
tantek
I counted 1110 words in that article (select all, copy / paste to text editor, cut page header/footer / ad crap)
#
tantek
WIRED word count is a limitation, like the [[Twitter]] 140 characters limitation, placed upon writers by the WIRED.com online publisher as noted by @EthanZ https://twitter.com/EthanZ/status/907411389391818753 that appears to be approximately 1200 words (The article that tweet is about is ~1110 words long).

jeremycherfas: i used the indiepub plugin. i had to make some changes to it before it would create audio posts. those changes were rolled into the main codebase, so they're in the master branch. i don't remember if a full release has been made since.

If I cloned a repo into the wrong directory, can I just move everything into the right directory, including all the git stuff, and it will work going forward?
#

yep just make sure to move the parent directory, you need that hidden .git folder for the git magic to work
