@benwerd
I’m committed to running my own personal website, and I want to go back to real blogging, but I’m sick of doing server maintenance / software upgrades. Just saw my DB is down again, ffs. Moving to static files before too long.

db has -1 karma
#
tantek
what is database tax?
#
Loqi
The database antipattern is the use of a database for primary long-term storage of posts and other personal content (like on an indieweb site), and is an anti-pattern due to the additional maintenance costs, uninspectability, platform-dependence, and long-term fragility of databases and their storage files, as documented with specific examples below https://indieweb.org/database_tax

#
dgold
how hard is it to get compass up and running on a server?
#
dgold
aaronpk/compass i mean
#
aaronpk
It's a PHP app, you need Composer to install the dependencies. It also needs a MySQL database. If you're familiar with those things then it's pretty straightforward
#
dgold
setting up a mysql database is not my strong point, sadly
#
dgold
hence my strong preference for flat files
tantek joined the channel
#
aaronpk
Yeah, it uses MySQL for user config stuff. The actual data is stored in files
#
dgold
i understand - but does Compass require a specificly configured mysql database for the user config stuff?
#
aaronpk
Specifically?
#
aaronpk
It should work with MySQL defaults if that's what you mean

i've gotten the sql set up; i appear to be failing (badly) on the nginx configuration
#
aaronpk
hm I probably forgot to include an example in there
#
aaronpk
Look for docs on nginx config for Laravel, that should work
#
Zegnat
If compass uses Laravel for the DB management you should probably also be able to run it on any other Laravel compatible database driver, right? E.g. SQLite?
