GWG
What should the button to lookup location look like?
eli_oat and renem joined the channel
#
schmarty
GWG: map apps often use a compass icon for a button that zeroes in on your location
#

https://github.com/dshanske/simple-location/pull/57 - This is what was presented at IWC Baltimore.

So, @kingkool68 noted that my icons didn't make it clear what the action does

#
schmarty
the words are much clearer than icons
#
GWG
schmarty: But the size of the box doubled.
#
GWG
I'm trying to find a middle ground
#
schmarty
fair enough. i might suggest collapsing some of the layout to be side-by-side, to use less whitespace overall.
#
GWG
How so?
eli_oat joined the channel
#
schmarty
there are several ways you could lay out the forms or possibly reduce the size of some elements before converting the text on the buttons into icons.
#
schmarty
for example, the weather detail boxes could be on the same line as the "Get the Weather" button.
#
schmarty
depending on the number of available options, the Show: select box might work better as a couple of radio buttons without a label.
#
GWG
Well, I'm going to be getting rid of the button. If you retrieve location, weather will come with it.
#
GWG
I've already taken it out
#
schmarty
that's neat
#
schmarty
i also feel like the free-form "Location" box could be smaller, and the related buttons could sit on the same line.
#
GWG
What is a really good example of a location box?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "really good example of a location box" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "really good example of a location box is ____", a sentence describing the term)

Location tends to be either a Google maps inverted teardrop or gunsights
#
Zegnat
Interesting question to ponder, re TinyLetter not having an export function for previous newsletters: if GDPR allows me to request a overview of all my social media posts, would it also allow me to request all my previously sent emails from TinyLetter/MailChimp?
#
Zegnat
jeremycherfas++ for the follow up btw!

[kevinmarks] do you have any idea what the origin of that “inverted teardrop” is? Was GMaps the first to use that?

@manton How does crossposting from http://micro.blog to twitter handle the syndication? Will the webmentions be pulled back to the post on website? I realised Bridgy didn’t send a webmention for the activity on twitter.

The icons are now openly reusable as part of material design
#
dgold
[kevinmarks]: but isn't that _just_ as part of Material? Any use of the icon outside that scope would be litigatable
#
[kevinmarks]
“The icons are available under the Apache License Version 2.0. We'd love attribution in your app's "about" screen, but it's not required. The only thing we ask is that you not re-sell these icons.”
#
dgold
so it has the usual patent-strikeback clause
#
dgold
You can use these, but if you annoy us, then you have to pay us
#
dgold
that's a great clause to use as a vendor, but not great to use as a consumer
#
Zegnat
I thought the Apache clause was more of a “you can use it as long as you do not try to sue us” thing?

tantek it is a goal but I haven’t gotten there yet. I do star repos with a micropub like but its hacky at the moment. I haven’t tackled the micropub syndicate-to yet in WordPress
#

obligatory: https://silo.pub/ posses to github
#
[miklb]
I’m using a shell script and curl to send to silo.pub and shpub to send the like via micropub in WordPress
#
[miklb]
that’s what I’m using to do the stars, but not as part of a micropub syndicate-to action
#
aaronpk
I've started replying to issues and opening new issues from my site (using silo.pub) but I still find myself replying natively on github occasionally, probably due to habit

if you reply by email, you can use quill's email to micropub gateway to simulpost (assuming you have micropub)

Currently my POSSE (besides micro.blog) is all manual. I do have a goal to use silo.pub to add Twitter/Facebook/GitHub POSSE to my site this year
#
[eddie]
Well semi-manual. I use Bridgy Publish, but since I have Jekyll, I have to wait for it to rebuild, and then manually send my Webmentions to Bridgy Publish. Having essentially a micropub forward mechanism through silo.pub will streamline things and allow me to utilize syndicate-to targets to automatically POSSE which will be AWESOME. GitHub is definitely a priority there
