You know how we're all about simple(r) building blocks instead of a big complex stack? here's some good (security) reasons for that methodology: https://twitter.com/fmarier/status/1004067098455302144

@fmarier
Why escalating complexity in both hardware and software is going to keep security people busy for a while: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/17bKudNDduvN-7hWv7S84MiHUj2AnOPNbwjTM8euDC8w/mobilepresent#slide=id.p1

[kevinmarks]: “This is one view” did you send a screenshot on Slack? Shared anywhere else?

can someone ping fireburn.ru? I'm not at home now and I can't reach it, wondering if something happened with it

oh it's alive now

Slide 24 on that slide deck makes a great point about software engineering

any good ways to make a dropdown menu in <nav> with fallback for no-JS users?
#
sknebel
oh fun, Content-Encoding: none is a thing too, despite not being in any standard
#
swentel
!tell [eddie] Your timeline returns a 504 (but maybe you know that already)

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

sknebel: who does C-E: none?

!tell swentel Uh oh! That's not good
#
[eddie]
Thanks
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
swentel
homepage is fine though
#
swentel
so it's something specific there
#
sknebel
Zegnat: random apps apparently. e.g. Grav

Zegnat
Huh. Link?

#
[eddie]
yeah hmmm something happened to some of the saved webmentions on my server
#
[eddie]
It couldn't find them and was breaking
#
[eddie]
so multiple issues: 1) a missing webmention file shouldn't break the page
#
[eddie]
2) what the heck happened to my webmentions?!?!
#
Zegnat
sknebel, well, that’s weird.
#
Zegnat
Thankfully I don’t think we have to worry about it for the actual requests
#
[eddie]
like, how do JSON files just dissapear?!?!
[jgmac1106] joined the channel
#
Zegnat
Hmm, sknebel, so if I understand it right, if we tell curl to handle compression for us and it isn’t a new enough version, it may fail to retrieve Grav sites completely? That might be a problem afterall
#
sknebel
maybe?

Grav has unfortunately moved from Slack to Discord, but in any case I don't feel competent to ask anything on behalf of real developers.

jeremycherfas: this is probably a question they wont have the answer to either, unless they have tested querying Grav sites using different versions of curl

Possibly not, but it might be something they are not even aware of.

I have an alt txt bext practice question. I have a student who is working on trying to start a club on campus for blind students. She is doing are photo challenge and put an image description in each photo caption. Would it be best to leave alt="" blank to reduce screen reader repetition?
jgmac1106 and [jgmac1106] joined the channel
#
Zegnat
jgmac1106, I think caption and alt serve different purposes. I like the example used here, where the alt describes the imagery and the figcaption the context: https://dequeuniversity.com/presentations/html5-nfb/figure-figcaption
#
Zegnat
Though to be fair, asking the blind students might give better answers, which we would then love to see pop up on a blog ;)

do y'all go about making useful user agents for your sites?
#
jacky
I'm beginning to consider making one for Koype
#
jacky
something like "Koype/{version}; (https://faq.koype.net/user-agent)"
#

heh. don't overthink it. that looks great

I will admit to having used one that just said it was curl <.<

that and to be friendly to peoples' logs

Still thinking about updating the external fetch code in php-mf2. But every time I think I figure something out a new rabid hole opens (compression, encoding, file size limitations……)

wasn't there a project for a indie app store of sorts?
#
jacky
what is h-x-app
eli_oat joined the channel
#
Loqi
h-x-app is a proposed microformats vocabulary for marking up data about software applications https://indieweb.org/h-x-app
#
jacky
what is store
#
Loqi
A store (or marketplace) is a service for discovering and then installing applications https://indieweb.org/store
#
jacky
so I'm doing some questioning with people for koype
#
jacky
and one thing is since that I'm not going to ship it with a way to "edit" content in itself; 'discovery' is going to be needed
#
jacky
(discovery in itself is a whole different convo)
#
snarfed
jacky: can you elaborate? i don't really follow the problem or question
#
jacky
I think I'm rambling a bit lol
#
jacky
but like let's say you set up an account on micro.blog
#
jacky
you can post from your own site using wordpress or something
#
jacky
but the project I'm working on doesn't have an editor component like that
#
jacky
and it's not really explicit about _where_ to go
#
jacky
I might just point it to Quill for now

got it. figuring out product design direction. ok.

right

starting with quill sounds fine
