Howdy all! I'm not sure why my note showed up as a Comment and not an RSVP on this event page; I assume my markup isn't quite right, but I'm not sure how? https://events.indieweb.org/2020/06/online-indieweb-meetup-nyc-Vvg1d4IlQSKO

#
aaronpk
aha it's "Yes" instead of "yes"
#
jmac
aaronpk: I keep forgetting about all your checker-tools, embarrassed
#
aaronpk
looks like only lowercase is expected
#
[tantek]
case-insensitive!
#
aaronpk
ah it does say that
#
[tantek]
it literally says righ there "Case-insensitive values, normalized to lowercase"
#
[tantek]
gives up on spec writing
#
aaronpk
in that case i would suggest adding an example as such :)
#
[tantek]
only because you already edited the wiki since export
#
jmac
I changed my "yes" to a <data> value and it's still a comment, boo
#
aaronpk
hm and yes I'm looking at Meetable source and it looks like it should be handling it case insensitively anyway
#
aaronpk
strange, it's even stored as an RSVP internally
#
aaronpk
the plot thickens...
#
jmac
Is my note too long or chatty somehow? ISTR that caused some confusion earlier (when I tried to use a full-length blog article as my RSVP)
#
aaronpk
the length doesn't matter, but if it has a "name" then that might look weird
#
jmac
The entry doesn't, according to that MF2 parser output
#
jmac
(and my intent_
#
aaronpk
well your post looks right and is stored properly in meetable, so it looks like a bug in how it displays stuff
#
jmac
oops. "you're welcome"
#
aaronpk
welp guess i'll go deal with that right now
#
jacky
another data, another chance to find a bug in the mf2 parser I'm using :)
#
jacky
it doesn't support <data> elements (which would be super useful for things hiding an author or the likes)
#
jmac
I'm helping!

↩️ @ohhelloana this is inspired by one of your posts. Tried to send a webmention but found no endpoint. :)
(twitter.com/_/status/1270538790784778240)
#
aaronpk
that took me too long to debug
#
aaronpk
jmac: your post has no in-reply-to property! so there's no indication of what you're RSVPing *to*
#
[tantek]
does it link to the event at least?
#
aaronpk
yes, which is why it shows up under comments
#
aaronpk
really need an RSVP validator
#
aaronpk
it would have caught this immediately
#
[tantek]
comments or mentions? it should only show up as a comment if it has an in-reply-to!
#
aaronpk
it doesn't distinguish, i didn't think that was an important enough distinction here

My RSVP note from last month doesn't have one either, but I wonder if I also hit the on-page "I'm going!" button too and confused myself

This is how I’m thinking about displaying trackbacks, pingbacks, and webmentions. Although, truth be told, I don’t really get any. The entire item would be the link to the post which sent the ping, to make it easier.

been collecting some sites whose designs really stand out to me for inspiration as I read / skim "Refactoring UI" (by the Tailwind people) and "hello, startup"

one that really sticks out is https://signal.org/#signal

#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "design examples" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "design examples is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
hmm thought we had a page for that
#
jacky
It's also interesting how many sites use Inter https://rsms.me/inter/
#
jacky
it might be just the preferred "fall back" font for non-Mac devices
#
[tantek]
looks like we were only collecting actual personal indieweb site examples https://indieweb.org/design#IndieWeb_Examples
#

that makes sense (semantically)

Webmentions are strange, at least in how the WordPress plugin handles them, as they contain far less context about the pinging post — which is to say none whatsoever. Old-fashioned trackbacks and pingbacks at least include a snippet of the post which ... https://bix.blog/2020/06/10/webmentions-are-strange.html

plugin split strikes again 😭
#
GWG
[snarfed]: I am awaiting the last PR merge on the matter since December.
#
GWG
It is slow work
#
[snarfed]
4 years slow? 5?
#
[snarfed]
sounds like much of the delay is that pfefferle doesn't have much time available for wordpress plugin work? PRs wait weeks, months, to be merged?
#
[snarfed]
that seems...not ideal. remind me if you've asked him to add you as a committer, so you don't have to block every PR on him?
#
GWG
[snarfed]: He can handle small PRs, but everything with mf2 is larger
#
[snarfed]
sure. hence my q's
#
GWG
[snarfed]: I am, but merge requires a review
#
GWG
He's the only reviewer
#
[snarfed]
ah. sounds like you need to recruit another reviewer!
#
GWG
And when he's busy, I go work on something else till he's done
#
GWG
[snarfed]: Easier said than done
#
[snarfed]
or reconsider that policy, if it's causing this much harm to plugin development
#
GWG
Same problem for the other IW plugins
#
[snarfed]
i'd estimate that the slowness of development is more harmful than any benefit you currently get from reviews
#
GWG
I will make my next project cleaning up my outstanding PRs though
#
[snarfed]
ie, does he often have useful feedback in the reviews, that result in meaningful improvements to the PRs? or are the reviews usually rubber stamps?
#
GWG
I think I have one where I didn't do what he asked in IndieAuth
#
GWG
Mixed
#
[snarfed]
right. sounds like you need either another reviewer or to change that policy, or both
#
GWG
[snarfed]: I really want to finish the rewrite and get to feature changes people asked for
#
GWG
On IndieAuth I want to merge the remote endpoint code in and stop maintaining a second copy in Micropub
#
GWG
Etc
#
GWG
How do you recruit reviewers?
[pfefferle] joined the channel
#
[pfefferle]
I think it is not a good idea to change the policy! We had some serious issues with the indieauth plugin
#
[pfefferle]
I also do not think it is me blocking development.
#
[pfefferle]
It is hard to discuss basic design patterns for the re-write of the Webmention plugin
#
[pfefferle]
It is not the reviewing that blocks things
#
[pfefferle]
(In my opinion)
#
GWG
[pfefferle]: The design is hard, and the combination of work, timezones, etc...
#
[snarfed]
ok! thank you both for working on it. we appreciate it!
#
[snarfed]
you two know the details better than me. it just makes me sad that we've known for years that the plugin split is bad for UX, and agreed for years that we plan to merge them, and yet it still hasn't happened yet
#
GWG
[pfefferle]: I am not blaming you, just really wish we could figure out how to proceed
#
GWG
[pfefferle]: While you are here, since the mf2 pr is stalled, I may do some unit tests, which should help you feel better about the code
#
[pfefferle]
But it is not that easy to merge both. We did a lot of things wrong for the sl plugin (comment types, reactjis, ...)
#
[pfefferle]
It does not make things better if we simply merge them
#
[snarfed]
i think, net, it would definitely make things better for _users_. if it doesn't make things better for you all, that may be an ok tradeoff
#
[pfefferle]
Do you really think the two plugins is a big show stopper? I would argue that the issues and glitches are more frustrating than installing two plugins
#
[snarfed]
nothing here is a show stopper. but i personally think it's maybe the second most important thing to do to improve the wordpress indieweb experience overall

GWG
