Loqi[James Gallagher] I am feeling this way about my quantified self data. I like to share it on my site but the goal of my site is to share my writing and thoughts with the world. I do love sharing quantified self data but it comes with a lot of overhead. I only show ent...
@vincentlistensIt turns out my bright idea to build my website urls based on date times was really really stupid. Don't ever do this and be me. It's a world of pain that means I'm going to have to rebuild almost everything from the ground up and alot of redirects to preserve the old urls :'( (twitter.com/_/status/1302532795068112900)
[tantek]my solution to timezones and EXIF was to never change the time in my camera when I traveled to different timezones, so when I returned home, all the times were "correct" in my home timezone (which matches up with my published times etc.)
[tantek]however, iOS gets this "right" so I have felt "safe" changing timezones on my iPod and not worried about it not working properly when I get home
[tantek]GWG, one "trick" I used to do is to use my camera to take a photo of my watch right after changing my watch's timezone to the local timezone (I was going to land in, usually I did this on the plane to wherever the timezone was different). That way I could check/verify the timeoffset between the visual time on my watch and what time the EXIF claimed the photo was taken
[tantek]as in long after the fact, when I had a collection of photos to go through, I could check these "timestamp marker photos" at the start / end of trips
[tantek]Thanks [jeremycherfas]. After one too many times of forgetting to set my Canon SD90 clock for DST, or getting confused about photo times & dates after returning from Australia, I found this to be the only way I could “reason” about what (local) time was it when I took the photo (which sometimes was in “the future”)
petermolnarfrom someone who tried to use EXIF as a meaningful storage: don't bother. It'll only cause you pain and suffering. If one insists, keep using the XML fields.
GWGJust created a URL that 302 redirects to my user photo so I can change my photos without changing the URL. Trying to decide what cache/expires instructions I should set.
