[tantek] age & resilience IMO jacky. it has helped to have a *practical* community around #microformats, not just a single (or oligopoly) of BigCos advocating it. there never was a "community" around microdata for example. and RDFa was primarily academic.

[tantek] there's always going to be a surge in whatever "API" a BigCo asks publishers to support for their own consumption use-cases. E.g. publishers support JSON-LD (nearly) only because Google drives folks to it with their Rich Snippets documentation.

[tantek] it's not clear how much their endorsement actually helps more "good data" show up on the web in contrast to fraudsters publishing spam

[tantek] because of the "black box" nature of whether or not any particular thing you add to your site affects any search ranking etc.

capjamesg[d] Indeed. There is no guarantee your adding structured data will actually do anything to your search results.

capjamesg[d] Rather, without structured data you are probably less likely to get any richer snippets.

capjamesg[d] I say probably because I would guess Google is pretty smart about information retrieval beyond what people think they can do.
