Is this a bridgy use case, or is he wanting something else? https://mastodon.cloud/@anildash/109463814243959011

[preview] [@anildash] Is there a service that will host a single Mastodon account for me (not an entire instance) but let me alias it to my own domain? I don't want to run an instance, but I would like to control my address/handle.
#
aaronpk
depends on how much of mastodon he wants
#
aaronpk
wow there's an old issue for exactly the feature https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/2668

[snarfed]2
[KevinMarks] sounds like BF yes?
#
aaronpk
not if he wants to also be able to follow people from that account and use mastodon to read their posts right?
#
[snarfed]2
everything except "use mastodon" in that sentence
#
[snarfed]2
so yeah if that's the strict req't list then true, no
#
aaronpk
what happens if you follow someone from a bridgy fed acct?
#
M3bob[m]
I wonder what he means by "I don't want to run an instance." Seems to me there's a broad gap involved between "I don't want to deal with any hosting aspects myself at all" and "I don't mind setting up _something_, I just don't want a whole mastodon instance just for me." Depending on what he's after, what he's willing to do, how thorough he wants the result to be... it _seems_ to me like he's got a range of options from
#
M3bob[m]
But I might be projecting a little bit since I've spent roughly the past three weeks pondering stuff like that myself after having spent roughly the last eight years not getting around to any of it. :D
#
[snarfed]2
aaronpk: not sure what you mean? you can follow via BF, and then BF serves a feed of your followings' posts that you can read in any reader
#
aaronpk
oh cool i must have missed that feature
#
[snarfed]2
yeah all in the recent sprint

snarfed has 48 karma in this channel over the last year (92 in all channels)
#
[snarfed]2
it's a much more complete experience for participating in the fediverse now. still requires a decent amount of IndieWeb - u-follow-of, webmentions, social reader - but definitely more fully usable now
#
aaronpk
totally! that's great
#
Loqi
snafed has 1 karma over the last year

gRegor
it's working pretty well for me so far! snafed++
#
gRegor
snarfed++ oops
#
Loqi
snarfed has 49 karma in this channel over the last year (93 in all channels)
#
[KevinMarks]
So, Anil could build that up on glitch?
#
gRegor
Minimal to federate is redirect some .well-knowns to bridgy fed URLs, mf2 in your post, link to fed.brid.gy, then send a webmention to fed.brid.gy

[jacky]
four things, that's not so bad

#
[tantek]
I think what anil wants is the whole UI for creating/posting to somewhere using his domain, that also interacts with Mastodon, but not having to admintax the install/backend
#
[tantek]
like a managed WordPress except with all the IndieWeb/ActivityPub plugins installed and setup with an IndieWeb friendly theme
#
[tantek]
At least he didn't say, what was the prompt? "Solve this for me?" or something like that?
#
[KevinMarks]
so he wants micro.blog then
mro joined the channel
#
[tantek]
goodpoint
#
[tantek]
that should literally be the reply. pay micro.blog for an excellent hosted experience, and get all the fediverse interop. However, does micro.blog allow you to follow random fediverse accounts?
#
[jacky]
That's a good question
#
[jacky]
I _think_ Manton mentioned some work around that
#
[tantek]
I think Anil wants to *read* others posts also as part of this "solution"
#
[tantek]
like he wants his own site as his integrated posting/reading experience (something we've talked about for many many years)

[preview] [Manton Reece] Following Mastodon accounts from Micro.blog almost feels like I’ve re-joined Twitter. It’s great to see posts from people I haven’t kept up with in years. The main downside: too many hashtags! Maybe I built Micro.blog just to escape from hashta...

[snarfed]2
manton++ cool!
#
[snarfed]2
yeah arguably micro.blog is the answer if you're ok with it being your web site, BF is th answer if you want to keep your existing web site
#
[tantek]
lol "too many hashtags"
#
gRegor
[manton] Did your homepage lose microformats2? I had subscribed in Monocle to the mf2 feed at some point and noticed I wasn't seeing posts anymore.

Can subscribe with another of course, just wanted to mention it

I made some theme changes recently and may have messed something up.

It does feel fun to follow people on Mastodon. Made me wonder if Follow Friday is/will be a popular thing again to help discover more people.
#
[jacky]
I have seen some facets of Follow Friday happening on there!

Two days ago my #BridgyFed followers crossed 8-bits: https://fed.brid.gy/user/tantek.com Signs of #TwitterMigration: my prev post had ~2x more #fediverse responses than Twitter, a ~500:1 difference per follower (having ~250x more Twitter followers). Many ... https://tantek.com/t5NC1

[tantek]
is BridgyFed a dev keyword? or is fediverse? (no way because we'd be seeing lots)
#
[snarfed]2
the existing bridgy/brid.gy keywords probably already pick it up
#
[tantek]
excellent
#
[snarfed]2
also whee, maybe I get to start thinking about scaling, BF delivered that post of yours to 78 inboxes
#
[snarfed]2
guess it still works fine though. the webmention trigger is high latency since it's synchronous, but otherwise maybe ok
#
[tantek]
that must be using sharedInbox tho right since BridgyFed says I have 262 followers
#
[snarfed]2
yup
#
[snarfed]2
yeah that original wm to BF to deliver to those 78 inboxes took almost 2m. kinda long

What happens when there are followers across thousands of instances?
#
aaronpk
yeah....
#
[snarfed]2
🙉
#
[snarfed]2
(ok ok fine yes the answer is an async task queue like Bridgy uses)
#
aaronpk
my followers are across 500 different sharedInboxes now

I'm having trouble running the python mf parser locally. The repo's README.md is missing some instructions, e.g., "install the dependencies: TODO". Is there any place I can get some help with this?
Seirdy joined the channel
#
[snarfed]2
Does pip install not install them automatically?
#
btrem
No. There are conflicts with requirements.txt. I am on the cusp of creating an issue, but I'm fumbling, so I don't know how valuable that will be.
#
btrem
@[snarfed]2: That is to say, the README doesn't say what to do. I tried `pip install -r requirements.txt` and got dependency errors.
#
btrem
There are other missing sections: "Start the server: TODO". :(
#
[snarfed]2
Oh I believe you
#
[snarfed]2
Ohh that's a web site, not mf2py itself. Ok then, I'm less familiar with that
