So GitHub added support for recognizing the `/@username`-style Mastodon URLs in the new profile edit page. Anyone tinkered with this and figured out what GitHub is actually doing the Mastodon check? Can’t seem to get it to be happy with Micro.blog’s ActivityPub.
#

i just tried editing my profile and i see it made a request to /.well-known/nodeinfo.json on my domain
#
aaronpk
so it's probably looking for "software":"mastodon" there or something

Blah. I return 404 for that.
#
[manton]
I was expecting it to just do an json+activitypub request.
#
[manton]
Thanks, though. I don’t want to advertise myself as actually Mastodon, so sounds like a GitHub feature request.
#
aaronpk
what does github do when it recognizes a link is mastodon?

oh it looks like it changes the icon to the mastodon logo?
#
aaronpk
so really the feature request is for arbitrary logo support? sounds like favicon
#
aaronpk
haha confirmed, it just checks for the software name in nodeinfo
#
aaronpk
i'm just gonna leave it like that
#
aaronpk
it also caches it so i can switch the name back now
#
[manton]
Ah, nice.

You should ask them to add a micro.blog icon too https://xoxo.zone/@KevinMarks/109792522554067365

[preview] [Kevin Marks] @derekprior @film_girl If you're going to gather icons for multiuser sites that support rel=me yourselves, micro.blog is one to add to your list.
#
[KevinMarks]
I told them to use the Google favicon proxy eg https://xoxo.zone/@KevinMarks/109792515936508234

[preview] [Kevin Marks] @derekprior @film_girl When we built the rel-me stuff into Google Profiles favicons worked OK, but I do get that any way for others to inject images into your pages is a concern - that's why the Google favicon proxy exists. eg https://www.google.com/...

Thanks for mentioning Micro.blog. I like the idea of falling back on favicon… Interesting that they considered it but decided against it.

looks like bluesky's AT(X?) thing a bit

I hadn't, interesting. At least they tell you up front about keys "If you lose your private key your Nostr account is lost"

Seems like it's destined to be for devs as a result though

Eek "If all the relays that you have used in the past go offline, all your posts will be unretrievable."

<capjamesg#4492> The Mastodon comparison doesn’t seem fair.

Because of this, users are subject to the despotism of a single person, which is often worse than that of a big company like Twitter, and they can't migrate out.”

Yeah, instead rely on despotism of a handful of people maintaining relays? heh. It seems very "remain uncensorable" as their primary focus, but it feels like there's easier ways.

"Should I run my own relay? For most people, no, it's not worth the hassle. That said, if you're technical and want to ensure that your speech is absolutely uncensorable, then you can and should run your own relay."

<capjamesg#4492> I read a ridiculous LinkedIn post that tried to invoke “open standard” as an argument why a blockchain solution would solve a problem.
#
IWDiscordRelay
<capjamesg#4492> They pointed to the history of success of open standards like HTTP and TCP.

You know, that's kind of the same problem even with the IndieWeb homepage or projects that center "ethics" (or their morales) as the crux of the project (I guess in this case, the IndieWeb operating as a community makes that more sensible)

yeah, there are SPOFs, definitely not perfect

I liked tantek's post highlighting some of the tensions / trade-offs http://tantek.com/2023/026/t1/indieweb-priorities-balance
