let's take a look at the page
#
[tantek]
what is DNS
#
Loqi
DNS is an abbreviation for Domain Name Server (or Domain Name System) and often used to refer to the configuring thereof on a domain name registrar or on a web host https://indieweb.org/DNS

cambridgeport90, no one else is hosting their own DNS currently, would you like add your example as you noted in chat above to https://indieweb.org/DNS#IndieWeb_Examples ?

It's all there inside of CloudFlare, so maybe I should just leave it there?

#
[snarfed]
cambridgeport90 do you have a reason to host your own DNS?
#
[snarfed]
if not, we'd probably recommend that you don't. it's a complicated, technical thing to do, very high risk low reward to self host
#
[snarfed]
funny, on a related note, I may actually need to self host a bit of DNS (for the first time ever) for Bridgy Fed. not looking forward to that. https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/744

I love how I can follow Obama on Mastodon since he is on Threads.

That's good to see. Bets on how many years till the api is restricted to the point it is unusable?
#
[KevinMarks]
well, it's explicitly a roach motel api already - post and maybe replies to posts but no feed access so no client apps. Maybe a good fit for http://brid.gy though
#
[aciccarello]
So POSSE but no PESOS?
#
capjamesg
[KevinMarks] Is "roach motel api" a standardized term?
#
[snarfed]
yeah so far it looks like you can fetch a post's individual replies, https://developers.facebook.com/docs/threads/reply-moderation#replies
#
capjamesg
Why use the API vs. AP?
#
capjamesg
Or is the API for all Threads users?
#
[snarfed]
capjamesg many reasons, probably most important that AP is opt in for Threads users, which only a tiny tiny fraction will ever do
#
[snarfed]
yeah API is presumably for all Threads users
#
[snarfed]
would be odd if not
#
[KevinMarks]
the common phrase is usually 'Data roach motel' which is a reference to a US cockroach trap
#
[Joe_Crawford]
an absolutely ancient idiom dependent on tv commercials from... the 1980s? "roaches check in, but they don't check out" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKhGHxO-woc
#
[aciccarello]
What is a roach motel?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "roach motel" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "roach motel is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
gRegor
resists urge to redirect that to /Twitter
#
sknebel
and people thought hte dogfood metaphor was disgusting ...
#
[aciccarello]
A roach motel is a metaphor for a [[silo]] that accepts data but does not allow exporting to other platforms based on a US insect trap advertisement campaign "roaches check in, but they don't check out". The term was used as far back as 2007 by [http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/2007/08/21/FacebookTheSocialGraphRoachMotel.aspx Dare Obasanjo] to describe facebook.
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://flickr.com/photos/psd/2592742563/in/photolist-4X7u2Z" to a brand new "See Also" section of /roach_motel https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=94569&oldid=94568

Might be time to redo the xkcd comic about dependencies in open source but for obscure idioms and pop culture used in tech jargon
#
capjamesg
[Joe_Crawford] Challenge: write a blog post of those idioms.
