# [Joe_Crawford] [mattl] how did DEADJOE files take down a server?

# [mattl] Apache configuration files were being edited and the resulting DEADJOE file was interpreted as a config file. Now Apache (on Debian at least) requires a .conf extension but back then it just took any old file. The server was restarted and it wasn’t spotted for about 15 mins. At which point joe was banned.
# [Joe_Crawford] HAH! That’s an awesome story. I was thinking it might be something like a .htpasswd or other dot file inadvertently exposed that revealed some secret.
# [Joe_Crawford] Joe was rightly banned.

# [morganm] I'm learning about PageTest, which was an early iteration of what is now WebPageTest, that ran on IE and AOL and such back in the day. It's only from 2009 but it feels ancient
# [morganm] Like talking about the old masters at work, but it's all within living memory
# [morganm] I have used webpagetest extensively on my personal site
# [morganm] I just happened as an aside to learn about it's history
# Loqi It looks like we don't have a page for "WebPageTest" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "WebPageTest is ____", a sentence describing the term)
# [morganm] WebPageTest is a web performance testing platform known for its incredibly detailed waterfall charts and number of options including scripting.
# Loqi ok, I added "[[performance]]" to a brand new "See Also" section of /WebPageTest https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=98674&oldid=98672
# [tantek] performance << tool/service: [[WebPageTest]]
# Loqi ok, I added "tool/service: [[WebPageTest]]" to the "See Also" section of /performance https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=98675&oldid=96617
# [morganm] I earnestly intend to do this sometime with downtime this coming week :)
# [morganm] WebPageTest is really cool and the people who made it are like solid gold standard contributors , the only downside is it got acquired and Catchpoint laid off most of the engineering team like I think in 2022(?) and it's been slow on updates and fixes it feels like since
# [morganm] It's still arguably the best freemium web performance tool
