If a lot of people are using WordPress, I'll use that. I want something stable and well-supported.

I feel like WordPress will be around for a while, but I think given the last year its had, I'm not sure I'd call it "stable" any more 😅
#
[tantek]
I'd say it's fair to say that WordPress the software is fairly stable, especially since the context is self-hosting
#
[mattl]
WordPress does have a fair bit of admin tax though.
#
[mattl]
Updates are very frequent, especially for plugins.

#
[tantek]
What is web design?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "web design" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "web design is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
Nope sorry, no web design here for you to steal
#
al3xaurus
well let me know if you spot one, they seem to be getting scarcer

i wouldn't trust WordPress as long as Matt is still in charge
#
immibis
he's subverted auto update mechanisms to insert his own code into plugins for example

WP is far more secure than it was, say, 10y ago
#
[snarfed]
but it's an ecosystem, you do have to pay a bit of attention, as with anything you self-hosrt

Year in Review is a feature on some silos (like Facebook) as well as being a special kind of article on some IndieWeb sites that summarizes important aspects of the past year, sometimes on specific topics like books read https://indieweb.org/wrapped

Oh yes, I wrote it all today too.

This isn't really new, so probably not a gift (?), but the indiebookclub year in review started updated for 2024: https://indiebookclub.biz/review/2024

[tantek], my site https://bluehome.net/csh/ currently runs on the GNU Guile Scheme static site generator Haunt, but I worry that it won't be featureful enough to support POSSE and IndieAuth, or do backfeed. I'm considering moving to WordPress.
#
Kolev
I also need to get a domain. And then there's the question of hosting at my house vs. a VPS.
#
[tantek]
for POSSE and backfeed, you can build both on top of Webmention sending/receiving support and Bridgy
#
[tantek]
for IndieAuth, depends on what you mean by "support IndieAuth" — what is the use-case you are trying to solve?
#
[tantek]
(like there are easier / harder answers depending on your goals)
#
Kolev
I've never used IndieAuth, so I'm not entirely sure on what it does, but it sounds awesome: It does single sign-on, right?
#
[tantek]
for the combination of "just" POSSE, backfeed, IndieAuth, you don't really need WordPress. Plenty of people with SSGs do all that just fine without WP
#
[tantek]
correct, IndieAuth is a single-sign on protocol built on OAuth. the question is, which part(s) of single-sign-on do you yourself want or need to support with your personal site
#
[tantek]
there are at least three parts
#
[tantek]
with varying use-cases for each, which is why I'm asking
#
[tantek]
as in, most people do not need "all" of IndieAuth
#
[mattl]
Kolev: Oh you know jxself 🙂
#
Kolev
I don't know what I want, but I want something that will adapt in the future.
#
[tantek]
That would be called PHP 😂
#
[tantek]
Only half-joking. The most adaptable IndieWeb sites are all built on PHP, most on custom PHP (aaronpk is a prime example here). I would put myself in a distant secondary category of that.
#
Kolev
[mattl], yeah, jxself has graciously enabled me to avoid getting my own domain, but now the JMP.chat people keep asking me, "Where's your domain?" I think it's finally time to get my own server...
#
[mattl]
or at least your own domain name. my site http://1800www.com has some tips on getting your own site on your own domain name with omg.lol which is $20 a year for static publishing plus whatever your domain name fees are.
#
[mattl]
but maybe you just need a domain name and have Jason put your site under that.
#
Kolev
My dream is to have a single address across the whole internet: caleb@example.net on all the things.

tanktek, what do you mean by custom PHP?
#
[tantek]
what is custom PHP
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "custom PHP" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "custom PHP is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
what is custom PHP?
#
Loqi
A content management system (often abbreviated as CMS) is software used to create, enter, edit, update, delete content on websites; some CMSs are used for IndieWeb sites, see the tables on this page for current usage https://indieweb.org/custom_PHP
#
[tantek]
^ now linked 🙂
#
Kolev
[mattl], yes, that's a good start, but I'm afraid that won't let me have xmpp:caleb@example.net with Snikket web UI at chat.example.net.
#
[alanm]
Weird. I interpret the phrase custom php to mean some sort of language extension.
#
[mattl]
Do you have an initial, Kolev? Just trying to find you a cool domain name.
#
[mattl]
looks like http://caleba.org is available for example
#
Kolev
[mattl], I was going to do "$firstname$city_initial.net" so calebkc.net, which has been available for a while.
#
Kolev
[mattl], so, a transition step is getting a domain name and having it direct to my stuff on jxself's server, both web and email.
#
[mattl]
yes, you can do some forwarding too, but coordinate with him on that but you can buy it now.
#
[tantek]
alanm that's reasonable. Perhaps handwritten (typed?) PHP would be a better description
#
[mattl]
bespoke maybe?
#
[tantek]
more likely betyped but maybe
#

artisinal PHP

Zeldman used to call it "handrolled", i.e. https://tantek.com/log/2003/04.html#L20030423t1659 however I have since avoided due to the smoking implement implication

Porkbun has some holiday discounts on domain registration (first year only): https://porkbun.com/event/holidaysales Some silly TLDs in there, but there's a discount on .com and some others that community members have used (.xyz, .blog)
#
[mattl]
https://dumbdomain.store seems to offer much of the same via Namecheap.
