Hi guys, i've got a question. I'm making a blog using only html and css. I've noticed that there is this thing called HUGO that can use template, create lists and convert md to html. Is it useful? Do you use it? Got some alternatives?

scimmiarancia[d] Good question! Hugo, a static site generator, is useful if you're site is growing to several pages and you want to reuse templates/pieces of code across documents.
#
capjamesg
What is a static site generator?
#
Loqi
A static site generator or SSG is software that developers can use (typically requiring command line access) to setup a personal site that uses a set of text content files typically stored on a server, and transforms them into a set of static HTML files for a website https://indieweb.org/static_site_generator
#
capjamesg
That wiki page gives more context ^^
#
capjamesg
Hugo is among the more popular static site generators, written in Go. 11ty is another popular one, written in JavaScript.

capjamesg[d]: As i've read it's like a back-end engine, but in fact it only generates static pages based on the tempalte and stuff you give to it
#
capjamesg
Exactly!
#
capjamesg
I use one for my website so that I can use the same template across all my blog posts without having to copy-paste lots of code.
#
scimmiarancia
Do you write blog posts in markdown and then send it to your generator?
#
scimmiarancia
and what about for the Blog page? Does it create automatically the blog list?
#
capjamesg
Static site generators read all the files in a folder, then put them into a structure that you can use how you want. For example, you can create archive pages that list all of your blog posts, and even apply filters (i.e. show only posts published in a certain year/month).
#
scimmiarancia
capjamesg[d]: seems life-changing. I NEED it. I'm just created the homepage of my blog. I will implemented today so i can start publishing articles.
#
scimmiarancia
May i send it to you after finished it? I would love to have some reviewws and advices

capjamesg
Sure thing!

[artlung] a topic to potentially explore in the next FrESH is images that "bleed" outside of their parent container.
#
capjamesg
I was following https://www.joshwcomeau.com/css/full-bleed/ but that particular guide is limiting when you also want to have a sidebar at the top of the article.

the way you frame it is interesting. if I have a narrow column of text, what are my choices for making something *inside that container* that are wider than it but don't destroy the column.
#
[Al_Abut]
Negative margins usually work well
#
[Al_Abut]
I’ve seen Naz use it, Le,me see if there’s an example
#
[artlung]
a lot depends on how the column is made, and the problem is often we decide after a design is set we need wider things in it.
#
[artlung]
(and good lord, maybe this week's fresh ought to be a link clearing house session)
#
[artlung]
[Al_Abut]++ yes negative margins are a great (and unintuitive) option.

Finally read Keith's article. Actually agree with like 95% of it! Title is definite inflammatory 😆
#
[tantek]
Mostly it's a very accurate criticism of how awkward class name abuse (BEM, utility classes) has harmed developer experience and code readability, which i tend to agree with.
#
[tantek]
The data-x and custom attributes approaches are worth experimenting with to see how they work for folks for sure.

Kind of a niche ask, but does anyone have recommendations for preferably open source software for budgeting for a mutual aid group? I'm kind of thinking like You Need a Budget. I've been using https://budget.keithjgrant.com/ for most of the year which is similar to YNAB and generally working well, but looking for maybe a bit less manual.
#
gRegor
YNAB does have a "YNAB Together" thing to share with others, so I might try that first, just asking while I think about it. One thing I don't think YNAB will handle great is we'd like to track one-time vs recurring donors.
#
gRegor
what is budget
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "budget" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "budget is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
gRegor
Fair, just checking if we had it :)

capjamesg, I do the narrower column with negative margins to make images wider / full-bleed

[tantek] that sounds interesting, what article was this?
#
gRegor
The title is also funny since the solution still uses class attribute :)
#
gRegor
Ah there's a section suggesting custom tags
#
gRegor
Well, not sure how I feel about that, haha

No, towards the end they suggest custom tags, like `my-card`
