Does quill.p3k.io behave strangely on anyone else's micropub endpoints? My DIY server keeps returning Bad Request but I can't tell at what point it decides to do that (in particular, if it does so for a valid reason)
#
ulhar4409
oh, it's sending the access token in headers *and* post body, apparently?

(I tried hooking it up to the micropub.rocks client tests and posting something, then saw the "Does not send multiple authentication methods (form-encoded)" test got a fail)
#
ulhar4409
i am tempted to do something on my end to compensate for this case by allowing double-token *if and only if* the tokens are identical, but i am not sure how bad of an idea this is :P
#
aaronpk
that's probably fine

implementing micropub was worth it i think
#
ulhar4409
i don't like fiddling with files much and my previous set up had a lot of that so i didn't like adding stuff to it
#
ulhar4409
should probably find some ways to simplify my code though, navigating hash tables and arrays gets verbose quickly if unabstracted

micropub++ I'm really pleased with the ability to post to my website several different ways.

This made me look into micropub again. But I see a lot of abandoned projects. Also a lot of server implementations, because I guess it really depends on your site's setup whether a micropub server can work.
#
itskalvaxus
How should I understand who micropub is for? Or more specifically how would it work for a non-technical person, because it seems like picking a mp server and hooking it up to your site is already quite a feat..

itskalvaxus the hooking it up to your site is definitely the hard part. I use indiekit as my micropub server run on a raspberry pi and updating the source for my static site. But there are also plugins for popular CMSes.
#
[aciccarello]
Once you have an mp server running, you can log into any mp client like quill to post to your site.
#
[aciccarello]
You also don't need to have all of your website features implemented via mp. For example I don't currently have editing via mp and I pretty much never post full articles from a mp client.

It seems all the Cloudflare disruption has to do with attempts to mitigate a 10/10 React vulnerability, explained here at The Register. This also affects Next.js, which is used seemingly everywhere. Credit to Computerbase for explaining the Cloudflare situation more clearly than other sources, albeit in German.

Computerbase, summarising the lot with inserted English-language sources, otherwise German: https://www.computerbase.de/news/wirtschaft/cloudflare-ausfall-viele-webseiten-erneut-weltweit-gestoert-und-nicht-erreichbar.95338/

And this is why we don't build around huge libraries with dependencies, people. 😂

Finally played around with adding some logos to the silo links on my links page. Used a sprite. https://artlung.com/links/ You can see (similar but not same) SASS code at https://codepen.io/artlung/pen/zxqLRoz

FYI for folks who implement various IndieWeb building blocks, especially the subset standardized at W3C, I just made this page which links to several of our "lists of implementations" https://www.w3.org/wiki/SocialWG/Usage
#

what is a PLC?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "PLC" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "PLC is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[artlung]
I hadn't heard this term. It's this. https://web.plc.directory
#
[tantek]
I am now reviewing those lists implementations to check for things being out of date, historical etc. but if you implemented an IndieWeb building block, please make sure your implementation is there!

artlung[d] Not sure if you automatically used these anyway, but for coloured logos, the best project to use as an icon source is: https://edent.github.io/SuperTinyIcons/index
#
rosesaysthis
I'm planning to create a sort of portal website (similar to what you suggested, tantek_com[d], re: that available domain), to refer to that project and my own Susty Icons project. Very similar goals, so it'd be good to increase visibility of both.

I did not use that source. I may do some redraws of the logos. I want them to be recognizable but also am not super glad to be sporting the logos of silos on my site (except http://libre.fm, him I like!)
#
[artlung]
Mostly I'm glad not to be using anyone else's thing as a dependency.

I definitely empathise with that (sorry, still me, different platform)
#
[artlung]
If this were for client work or commercial work I'd want to assure I was adhering to brand guidelines from providers. As it is, this is my own site.
#
[rose]
Yes, well, to some extent... The whole idea of those is that they are visually identical - indistinguishable. It's often simply a case of shrinking the size of the file by removing bloat, combining paths, reducing unnecessary decimal places, stuff like that.
#
[artlung]
As a CSS Battle / code golf player I appreciate code efficiency. It certainly matters when it matters. Though different people value different things.
#
[rose]
Indeed. 🙂 My bias is the sustainable dev focus. But I also like the satisfaction of speed.

Hi all. 16 years ago, I did the mistake to create a photo blog on Tumblr (yes I was younger and stupid) about classic cars I saw during my trip around the world or near my home. As you know what this platform became, I obviously lost credentials on my website. However, I want to build something super simple on my own domain.
#
ramenos
I was wondering if you could suggest me a CMS for this purpose: super light, no DB, simple to install via FTP with ease to publish from my phone or laptop as 1 post will contain the following: 1 photo + some text (brand, model and location of the photo).
#

I need to revive this fun activity of mine. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

fair warning, you should probably not use FTP (it's not very secure) but i get the idea
#

i don't have any experience with CMS stuff, but i remember looking at some before, hmmm
#
[tantek]
I assume when someone says FTP they mean SFTP
#
[tantek]
what is CMS
#
Loqi
A content management system (often abbreviated as CMS) is software used to create, enter, edit, update, delete content on websites; some CMSs are used for IndieWeb sites, see the tables on this page for current usage https://indieweb.org/CMS
#
[tantek]
what is SSG
#
Loqi
A static site generator or SSG is software that developers can use (typically requiring command line access) to setup a personal site that uses a set of text content files typically stored on a server, and transforms them into a set of static HTML files for a website https://indieweb.org/SSG
#
tantek.com
ramenos[d] ^ those two pages have a decent overview of a bunch of options that folks in the community have explored, and each option has its own page with IndieWeb Examples of folks actively using them in the community, good place to get an overview

I post photos to Flickr using their uploader or client app, then have PHP that accesses the Flickr API to embed flickr images by gallery as if they're hosted on my website
#
Kupietz
It was a bit complex to set up but very simple to use once it was: upload to flickr, the web page the gallery is n automatically updates
#
Kupietz
Ooops sorry meant to tag @ramenos
#
Kupietz
I'd give you the code outright, but it's WordPress, been a while so I can't recall if it depends on wordpress core functions
#
[tantek]
kupietz++ that's awesome! are you using Flickr as the CDN to serve the images or does your PHP use the Flickr API to copy the flickr images to your own server?
#
Loqi

#
Kupietz
Using Flickr as the CDN. I have so many images, the server drive was getting huge.
#
Kupietz
I replaced the wordpress [gallery] shortcode. I just grab the flickr album ID and put [gallery flickrid="12345"] in the post.
#
Kupietz
For realllllly huge galleries—something I try to avoid, but it happens—sometimes there's a little lag. But mostly it's totally fine.
#
Kupietz
Someday I will add pagination. Someday.
#

Speaking of WP, might as well mention, for anyone interested, my interactive CSS holiday lights from last year are now packaged as a small WP plugin. Just install & activate. https://github.com/kupietools/ktwp-wp-plugin-css-holiday-lights/
#
[tantek]
kupietz thanks for demonstrating Flickr as CDN for photo embeds is doable 🙏 it was a topic of discussion at IWC Berlin and I stated my intention to go in that direction because it made sense to me as the right set of trade-offs.
#
Kupietz
Sure. Glad to inadvertently contribute a proof-of-concept. It's been working well for me. I prefer to rely on as few 3rd party services as possible, but, flickr seems pretty reliable.
#
Kupietz
As you said, the right set of trade-offs.
#
Kupietz
If my gallery shortcode wasn't a huge complex spaghetti pile I'd post it. I still can, if there's interest, but it's a huge complex spaghetti pile. Owing to how image-heavy my site is, I have a lot of particular needs.
#
[tantek]
I feel "a lot of particular needs" describes a lot of us 😆
#
Kupietz

on another topic, I really like the organization of the information on https://indieweb.org/Micropub/Clients and similarly the Servers page, with the nice decorative green background overview nav column on the right
#
[tantek]
(In contrast to similar lists on /Webmention or /WebSub for example)
#
[tantek]
what do others think? I think we could use implementation documentation specific pages for both /Webmention and /WebSub with a similar styling, if folks think the Micropub implementations pages styling works
#
[tantek]
(I know it's more of a #indieweb-meta topic, however this is very dev-centric so I figured I'd ask here)
