[Al_Abut] One of my new year’s resolutions is to get back to making custom layouts for blog posts, as an excuse to brush up on some design and css practice.
#
[Al_Abut] Sneak peek of what I’m working on tonight, related announcement coming soon:
#
[morgan] Nice👽
#
[morgan] I need to take a look at my Hugo setup and custom Css for some pages
#
[Al_Abut] It’s gotten so much easier to stack effects on top of each other, now that css does multiple background images on a single element. I look back on my custom layouts from the bootstrap era and shudder at the number of <div> elements.

[aciccarello] Looks like Omnibear's lack of PKCE support is impacting some users. I've created https://github.com/omnibear/omnibear/issues/140 but the issue is in the upstream micropub.js project.
#
[aciccarello] GWG, I saw https://github.com/indieweb/wordpress-indieauth/issues/292 made it mandatory back in November. Is there a config option to make that optional?
#
[Al_Abut] Thanks for the props, gang! Trying to implement it will probably give me some good CSS questions to ask for a FreSH session.

simpleauthority I'm overthinking about how I want to set up my blog with micropub support. For my frontend, I'm using astro, which is primarily a static site builder but has SSR support. One thing I'm thinking about doing is standing up a custom micropub server to receive posts, turn them into markdown, use a git library to commit that markdown to my site's
#
simpleauthority embrace SSR, use a database to store the posts, and do it the traditional way. The only downside with option 2 is managing a server deployment for my personal website. But, in a way, it also allows me to do more with my site by integrating some extra backend things since I'll already have a server to throw stuff on. Thoughts?
#
simpleauthority repository, and then the CI/CD will automatically rebuild the site and republish it, keeping it entirely static. However, if I integrate webmentions, I'm a bit worried that this could cause a rebuild storm if a lot of mentions come in since it will be one commit per webmention (and 1 static file per webmention). The other option of course is to
#

[Murray]2 @simpleauthority that's a classic conundrum 😄 There are definitely ways to handle webmentions without hosting your own endpoint (http://webmention.io is the usual answer, alongside some client-side JS to fetch and display without needing to build), but Micropub is a different beast
#
simpleauthority [aciccarello]: I've raised a PR to micropub.js to add PKCE support.
#
[Murray]2 There are services that will host that part for you as well, if you want to stay fully static, but if you're using Astro I can personally recommend looking into its SSR functionality
#
[Murray]2 Doesn't need to be full SSR, but a few server islands and some HTML streaming can do a lot
#
simpleauthority [Murray]2: Thanks for the insight! I'm thinking I might go with SSR instead of the static approach I was talking about before. It might add some infrastructure complexity, but overall it will make it simpler to implement hehe. Thanks also for the information about webmention.io!
#
[Murray]2 I have to say, I started with fully static, and I'm not on a hybrid approach running via a more traditional web host, using Astro. There are definitely some rough edges, but I do enjoy having much more capability at hand
#
simpleauthority Did you just manually make posts and manually POSSE (if you POSSE) at first?
#
[Murray]2 Yep. Tbh, I still use manual POSSE, because I've found that I prefer to tailor what goes where, and how; it all ends up on my site in some form (though quite a lot of the stuff on socials is currently private only, which is another advantage of having a server)
#
[Murray]2 I now use Craft CMS to run pretty much everything database related, with a few import options. Still use http://webmention.io, though Craft has recently had a new plugin that would handle webmentions directly that I've been meaning to check out. I also periodically ingest the http://webmention.io feed for my account, saving the data to my database
#
[Murray]2 What is manual until it hurts
#
Loqi manual until it hurts is an IndieWeb development practice of resisting automating something until you have manually done it enough times to really understand it, and know that it is worth doing and automating https://indieweb.org/manual_until_it_hurts
#
[Murray]2 ^ but I've always liked that principle, and largely stick to it 😄
#
simpleauthority Wahaha. I love that page. I do believe I am currently suffering the bottom image. I really should just get started and stop spending so much time in analysis paralysis

[Murray]2 Yeah, been there too 😄
#
[Murray]2 Honestly, this is something that I also like about having a back end and a front end. Mine are fully detached, though even when treated as a single unit, the fact that I can play around with one before the other helps me actually start. Like, I can nail down an editorial workflow on a new feature before worrying about how it will build, or inversely create a page with static content and then think about how to store it all later.

[aciccarello] simpleauthority, thanks for opening a PR!
#
[aciccarello] I don't have maintainer rights on that repo so hopefully Keith is able to review soon
#
[aciccarello] Regarding micropub servers https://getindiekit.com/ is what I'm using now.
#
[aciccarello] I know webmention support in on the roadmap but I don't think it's actively being worked on.
#
[aciccarello] http://webmention.io also has APIs for date based queries so you could incorporate mentions into a static site build and then pull in the latest mentions via client-side JS
#
[Sophia_wood] ↩️ Let me know if you get that working. I'd like to do the same eventually. - and possibly get a fancy mic
#
simpleauthority Happy to help! Thanks for the suggestions as well, appreciate it!

WinnerWind you know, i've been wondering how come there aren't any good HTML, i would say "libraries", kind of like how Godot has a beautiful UI system that works within godot
#
WinnerWind for the longest time ive always wanted to make a tool that works like godots' nodes system, but for HTML, but i couldn't be bothered haha
#
WinnerWind i mean something that abstracts away the need of writing raw HTML
#
WinnerWind my subpages like the old music browser, my admin page, and my startpage (that one is active at https://startpage.winnerwind.in) are all made in JUST HTML and JS and it takes awfully long and is painful
#
WinnerWind i just wished that there was a nice UI editor so that i never have to look at HTML and just focus on writing JS
#
WinnerWind i'd love to see your site
#
WinnerWind it is a nice project idea bu i have wayyyy too many projects right now, and school to deal with
#
WinnerWind sure, im logged in at both places rn

btrem [artlung] Sorry I missed your response yesterday (or earlier today, depending on one's timezone). I was at work. To answer your question, I dunno, I'd like to get a working, subscribeable ical. Here's a link to date_ical: https://www.drupal.org/project/date_ical
#
btrem There's a link to the repo there. It looks pretty gnarly to me. I've solved the subscription part (though my fix may introduce security problems; I don't know enough php to really know). But the module makes it impossible AFAICT to create an ical feed from two different content types unless they use the same field names. So that's another problem I'd have to solve.
#
btrem It also seems to be borked on the location property, too. If the location is a field in the content type, it works. But if it's an entity reference to a location taxonomy term, it will not show the address, city, etc. It insists on showing the entity reference title with a url in a property called `ALTREP`. I'm guessing that's an abbreviation for alternate representation, because it comes on the same line as the `LOCATION` pro
