solonovamax
hey, I'm looking to add federation & comment/like/etc. support to my blog.
#
solonovamax
it could either be something which I have to add some additional code to my website for in order to save the comments to a database (i.e. it sends me a POST whenever I get a comment/like) or it can be an already fully-featured solution that allows me to fetch the comments/likes/etc. via an http request & handles the database for all this itself.
#
solonovamax
if nothing else really exists, I'll just use bridgy fed, and any good existing implementations for handling webmentions that I could use as a basis for mine would be great.
#
solonovamax
is there anything I could use, ideally, which I could host (so that my domain is used for the bluesky handle & for the fediverse domain)? (I don't particularly care about like nostr and whatnot. I primarily care about the fediverse, and then bluesky less so)
#
solonovamax
I'm thinking of using bridgy fed, however the webmention format is, how do I say this... kinda Bad. I do not particularly want to add a bunch more jsoup to my codebase.
#
osteophage
Not my area of expertise, but have you looked through the wiki? There are generally some tools and suggestions logged there.

also solonovamax I'm curious how the webmention format feels bad. you're using a microformats2 parser to parse bridgy fed's source pages, right?

hmm im struggling to enable SASL from my IRC client, this is indeed quite annoying
#

I'm using Halloy, how did you all enable sasl?

I don't know what SASL is, sorry. I'm assuming that Halloy is an irc client. I'm using Thunderbird/Ubuntu.
#
soham
SASL seems to be a way to authenticcate, i'm on thunderbird too, but unfortnately tunderbird cannot authenticate via SASL
#
btrem
Might be a good idea to ask about this in #meta.

soham
ah, good point

snarfed right now I'm not using bridgy at all. the only thing I'm doing html parsing for is I have smth that scrapes the minecraft.net page for all articles and generates an rss feed from that lol

solonovamax
@osteophage I took a quick look at the wiki but I didn't really find anything tbh

you don't strictly have to support webmentions to use Bridgy Fed, it's just a nice-to-have if you want replies to flow back and show up on your site.

what is webmention.io
#
Loqi
webmention.io is an open-source project and hosted service for receiving webmentions on behalf of your indieweb site https://indieweb.org/webmention.io
#
gRegor
There are services like that, too, if you want to delegate receiving webmentions to ^ Has a good API, too, so you can pull in webmentions and do whatever you'd like with them. I think there's some JS to dynamically display those directly. Others with static sites pull in those mentions and have it rebuild (parts of) their site to display them
#

what is webmention.js

[tantek]
thanks capjamesg! I edited and added a few more things! did your read get the update?
#
[tantek]
did your reader* get the updates
#
capjamesg
It seems not, but my reader only shows a preview of a post and links to the post itself so, in this case, where the first few words of the post (in place of the title) are unchanged, it doesn't matter:
#
capjamesg
But I really should have a mechanism for showing the most up to date content.
#
capjamesg
There are certainly times when I have amended the title of a post shortly after publishing it.
#
capjamesg
Thinking out loud (so as to figure out exactly what I need to do): my reader would need to compare the titles/post contents of every item in a feed when it is polled with what is saved in the database, and make sure the database always contains the most recent information.
#
capjamesg
A related issue that I have not yet solved is what to do if a post's slug has changed, which is hard since the URL for a post is considered a unique identifier. Sometimes people publish blog posts and change the slug (i.e. to fix a typo). If my reader already has an entry for a post with the original slug, it will create another entry for the post with the new slug.
#
[KevinMarks]2
a 301 redirect is supopsed to solve that, but you'd need to know to check the old post URL for one

A possible issue I noticed on the IndieWeb wiki: this shell one-liner to send webmentions (https://indieweb.org/webmention-implementation-guide#One-liner_webmentions) says 'rel="http://webmention.org/"' instead of 'rel="webmention"'. I tried the former and it doesn't work, while the latter does.

#

Interesting - is that what the standard used to be?
#
[tantek]
It was an early proposal. There was a brief period of history where a small outspoken crowd tried to make all rel values URLs. Fortunately (for authors and developers), it failed

Moving a chat about NUCs, self-hosting, and carrier-grade NATs with WinnerWind over here...
#
WinnerWind
i forget what an NUC is
#
WinnerWind
gonna look that up rq
#
WinnerWind
OH THESE THINGS
#
WinnerWind
i think a thinkcenter is an NUC too
#
[rose]
yesss. Kinda like a Pi but better.
#
[rose]
And yeah the specs sounded nuccish.
#
WinnerWind
to be fair when i got myt hinkcenter i thought it was pretty weak for server stuff but then now that ive been using it for server stuff, its surpriginly loaded
#
WinnerWind
the CPU barely goes above 3%
#
WinnerWind
exception is when im streaming a movie
#
WinnerWind
ofc it spikes then
#
WinnerWind
[Rose]: i do have many pis, i got a pi zero which im gonna use to make an mp3 player and it takes 2 minutes to boot into linux headless 8=X
#
[rose]
Yeah! It's interesting seeing where they do actually hiccup. It's been interesting seeing how my husband's one has been. It has 4 cores, N250, and 16 GB DDR5 RAM. The latter means it's like any high-power PC most of the time. But on Fedora, Evolution (email client) would crash all the time adding attachments.
#
[rose]
I switched him over to Mint... first XFCE but he whined about the lack of nightlight and general prettiness he'd seen on his mum's computer. So upgraded that to Cinnamon, which does, in fact, run fine.
#
WinnerWind
oh that's odd, crashing to add an attachment is very odd indeed
#
WinnerWind
fedora uses gnome by default yeah
#
WinnerWind
gnome is pretty darn bloated
#
[rose]
Yeah I think that was the issue. He did like Gnome, but he's happy with Mint Cinnamon.
#
WinnerWind
mint cinnamon is pretty nice
#
WinnerWind
i use arch linux + kde plasma
#
WinnerWind
its a pretty nice setup, i spent forever making it look right
#
WinnerWind
unfortunately can't send photos here or else i would 100% do the i use arch btw thing
#
[rose]
I switched from Fedora to Ubuntu at the same time just cos I wanted to be back on a Debian system and have us both - plus my server - on the same basic system.
#
WinnerWind
ubuntu server is awfully cursed
#
WinnerWind
i made an ubuntu server for my dad using a thinkcenter
#
WinnerWind
while he doesn't use it much, i remember the first thing he did was install a desktop environemtn
#
WinnerWind
but debian is nice!
#
WinnerWind
my home server runs arch though
#
[rose]
I used Debian years ago.... Debian 7 was the last one I actively used to host things, if that gives you some idea of the last time I managed hosting myself. 😄
#
WinnerWind
part of me wishes i used debian because its super tough to find the niche server packages on arch, or you compilse it yourself, which isnt the easiest to do on a thinkcenter
#
WinnerWind
oh wow yeah that's a long time
#
WinnerWind
debian 7 is ancient
#
[rose]
Right - that's what got me pissed off with Fedora.
#
[rose]
Ubuntu is piss easy, you have literally everything.
#
WinnerWind
debian i presume isnt
#
[rose]
I only ever used it for a server.
#
WinnerWind
fair enough
#
[rose]
Back then, the early 2010s, debian was a good choice for servers.
#
[rose]
Ubuntu is nice. Access to all debian apps, but all the other convenience stuff that Fedora actually relies on, like flatpak, work too. Just have to avoid its preference for Snaps. Which, incidentally, Mint does automatically.
#
WinnerWind
isnt that also the case? debian being he meta for servers
#
WinnerWind
i remember when i first got a thinkcenter iw as told to set up debian for it
#
[rose]
I mean Ubuntu 24 seems to be the preselected default on a lot of servers now.
#
[rose]
But yeah back in the day Debian was always preselected.
#
WinnerWind
i cant tell why people would chuse ubuntu for servers tbh
#
WinnerWind
its so awfully bloated
#
WinnerWind
mmaybe that's just me but it just has too much for a base install
#
WinnerWind
sure that's nice but wow it's not great for a server
#
[rose]
Googling. 🙂 Newer software versions is the big thing, but also better hardware support.
#
WinnerWind
wdym by googling?
#
[rose]
As in I went and googled to see what the masses thought. Also to remind myself. Extended support was one reason, plus my host simply recommending it.
#
WinnerWind
fair enough!
#

@tantek The fitness totals are indeed from all of my Strava activities since I started using it. Wrote a function to fetch all activities and wrote them to Convex. I then ran another function to create a single table (stravaStatsCached) where all totals are calculated and stored in rows, so my website doesn't calculate 1000+ rows of data every load and quickly fetches the totals from the cached table.
#
Ekul
That table gets updated now only when a webhook is fired (create, update or delete) from Strava API. The code was custom-made using React, and the Strava integration uses OAuth for auth and webhooks. Happy to share more details if you are interested.
#
[rose]
@WinnerWind Curious about what you said about solo-ing, though. If you work, surely it's useful to be able to share and collaborate? I may be stuck behind my freelancing lens though.
#

i'm a student!
#

still in HS
#
[rose]
Ahh! Someone else is paying the bills! 😄
#
WinnerWind
yeah, its my father LOL
#
WinnerWind
no we have solar panels for the house
#
WinnerWind
so technically it costs 0$ to run the server
#
[rose]
lol, nice. good for you building some of your own infrastructure before it costs anything!
#
WinnerWind
yup! i just wish i could de-google my life
#
WinnerWind
i would make my own mailserver and recieve mail if my ISP let me
#
WinnerWind
"static ips are only for corporate clients", lets get an F for all the gamers in the chat who just want to play without NAT
#
[rose]
You may be able to apply. I set mine up and got right to the very end - all the other stuff sorted - when I realised the ports were blocked by the ISP and I'd have to ask for them to be unblocked.
#
[rose]
But you can still use more ethical options, like proton or mailbox org
#
WinnerWind
im using smtp2go + cloudflare to recieve sending / receieving mail respectively
#
WinnerWind
smtp2go is really too generous, 1000 mails a month for individual users
#
WinnerWind
i honestly am not a fan of our ISP
#
[rose]
American, unfortunately = not private.
#
WinnerWind
the speeds are good but they do a lot of backhanded behavior such as blocking sites and at times terminating connections in between
#
WinnerWind
i dont get why sites need to be blocked
#
WinnerWind
doesnt america have good privacy laws
#
[rose]
what sort of sites?
#
[rose]
US law frankly is irrelevant in the current administration. and no, it's shit even when abided by. they're allowed to read anything they think is in their national interest.
#
WinnerWind
well mainly piracy, but of late they have blocked VLC (because of something that happened in 2017) and opensubtitles (unknown why this was blocked)
#
WinnerWind
the vlc story is hilarious but im upset that the block hasnt been lifted
#
[rose]
ah, they don't wanna be held liable for copyright claims.
#
WinnerWind
yeah but it's upsetting
#
WinnerWind
luckily i can get around it using a VPN

lol 😄
#

[Rose]: ah yeah the US situation sucks tbh (offtopic) it sucks mainly cuz i half want to study there once im out of school but chances look grim for me
#
WinnerWind
the situation sucks so hard that ive alreadya pplied for a US Visa, but i can only really start college in 2027 april / may
#
WinnerWind
anwy this is kin dof offtopic for this channel haha
#
[rose]
You're Indian, right? Be careful whatever you do. Lots of places looking to exploit. In Russia, Indians got pulled into the military. In Germany, some applied via "assistant" programmes to private universities - only to end up in near modern slavery situations working for food delivery companies.
#
WinnerWind
yup, good guess, how'd you know?
#
[tantek]
WinnerWind, yeah, sounds like we're getting into non-indieweb topics that would be welcome in #indieweb-random channel!
#
[rose]
But yeah - the topic - this is why degoogling also ends up being de-US-ing in Europe.
#
WinnerWind
I think we could continue there [Rose] ^_^``
#
[tantek]
degoogling or de-US-ing your services is definitely on topic. probably split between main #indieweb and #indieweb-dev depending on what level you're talking
#
WinnerWind
died of channel switching
#
WinnerWind
how does one de-US their services anyway
#
[tantek]
Ekul, that's great! How many years? From the display it looks like a lifetime total which would be amazing (I mean there are probably babies wearing fitness trackers these days that will have that data)
#
[tantek]
WinnerWind, we don't have a specific page however depending on the service, e.g. email you can look there for non-US alternatives
#
WinnerWind
im curious about how it matters
#
[rose]
Well, can stay here on the de-USing topic. Basically - in Europe the focus is on digital sovereignty, hence Nextcloud and so on. I wouldn't have been able to move away from Microsoft so easily a few years ago - resistance and tolerance of MS and co has grown.
#
[rose]
RE: guessing you're Indian, the domain name and slow loading speed.
#
[tantek]
Ekul, the other thing I wondered is if you've used that data to create your own "year in review" of sports / physical activities? E.g. my very simple one I did by hand using data typed in from Strava's "Year in Sport": https://tantek.com/2026/004/t1/year-in-sport
#
[rose]
WinnerWind - I'll take the reasons for de-USing to random.
#
WinnerWind
[Rose]: oh right i remembered mentioning that my domain is slow cuz india
#
[rose]
Yeah don't think you mentioned India, but the TLD and and the speed pointed to it.
