[artlung] canonical for your own content is wherever you say it is, and you can choose to move it in the future! i.e. canonical ≠ where you created it
#
[tantek]
I believe that is the intent behind the original HTTP 30x redirect codes, to enable web site owners to move where they say is the current "canonical" URL for something, and redirect old URL to the "new" canonical location
#
[tantek]
in this case, since you can't move it, and can't put rel=canonical on the other end, I believe the best you can do is to indicate that the tweet copy is now secondary from your perspective. even if it was "before the fact", linking to the tweet copy with u-syndication indicates that you now consider that link to be the copy, and prefer the version on your own site
#
[tantek]
we could perhaps explore a link rel or other u-* property to express "originally created at" but I'm not sure of a consuming use-case for that so I wouldn't bother for now
#
[tantek]
thus even those who practice PESOS instead of POSSE, can reasonably link to their (original) silo copies with u-syndication IMO
#
[artlung]
appreciate the nuance there. thanks tantek. the more tweets I look at the more different rendering cases I'm looking at.

We wrote the spec carefully "By adding `rel="canonical"` to a hyperlink, a page indicates that the destination of that hyperlink _SHOULD_ be considered the preferred or definitive version of the current page." - you no longer prefer X, you change the designation.

certainly, wouldn't want to confuse it with rel="cawnical"

The site is really well designed.

putting in here bc of jargon but I have a raspberry pi id love to try hosting from but the idea of port forwarding terrifies me

#
capjamesg
I personally am not comfortable with port forwarding so I have erred away from self hosting.
#
ulhar4409
terrifies you for security reasons or for "how do i do this" reasons?
#
capjamesg
And the maintenance tax that I'd incur.
#
capjamesg
Oh sorry you may not have been asking me. Disregard !:D

ulhar4409
it was an open question tbh

ulhar4409[d]: security reasons
#

it looks simple to do but... even though I hear it is safe in theory it seems like a big flaw in your home network to introduce
#
ulhar4409
depends on what ports you open and what's listening to those ports i think

I have looked into self hosting multiple times and come away knowing exactly how to do port forwarding on my router but also fearing it. Managing a server that is on the same network as my sensitive info seems like bad times waiting to happen.
#
bubbybumble
yep
#

port forwarding looks like using a simple menu

I know firewalls exist but I also know how much of a pain keeping my hosted site up and reasonably bot free has been recently m
#

but doing it securely looks like the hard part

I read someone today talking about self hosting on mastodon and coming to the conclusion that even if it works out it's a lot of upkeep for one person and way more likely to be useful if you band together with a bunch of friends - presumably with a combination of spare time, knowledge and resources between them.
#
CrowderSoup
I've hosted my own mastodon server before. It _is_ a lot of work.

With the PKCE support it should now work with the Wordpress indieauth plugin
#
gRegor
Successfully posted my like with it, woo! https://gregorlove.com/2026/02/star-proud-to-finally/
#
gRegor
I also support PKCE, though don't require it. Might be time to flip that switch to required.
#
CrowderSoup
Yeah, when I was implementing my IndieAuth I thought about allowing non-PKCE but I didn't end up adding it
#
gRegor
Definitely think that makes sense for anything new in 2026
#
[aciccarello]
Wohoo. Glad it worked!
#
[aciccarello]
The Wordpress plugin has required PKCE for a while
#
[aciccarello]
And it has been in the spec for a long time. Probably worth requiring.

Proof Key for Code Exchange
#
CrowderSoup
what is PKCE?
#
Loqi
PKCE is short for Proof-Key for Code Exchange (pronounced "pixie"), a standard (RFC 7636) extension to OAuth 2.0 that is used by IndieAuth, that protects against intercepted authorization codes during the OAuth flow https://indieweb.org/PKCE

It looks like we don't have a page for "dog fooding" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "dog fooding is ____", a sentence describing the term)

what is use what you make?
#
Loqi
use what you make is an IndieWeb principle that encourages creators to use the applications, tools, libraries, code, designs, documentation that they create, in particular on their personal website, and the counterpart of the make what you need principle https://indieweb.org/use_what_you_make
#
ulhar4409
what is dogfood
#
Loqi
dogfood in the context of the IndieWeb was used to refer the software practice of metaphorically “eating your own dog food” in particular with using your own creations on your own personal site that you depend on, day to day, however the IndieWeb community prefers to instead use the metaphor “eat what you cook” for this encouragement https://indieweb.org/dogfood
#
ulhar4409
it would probably be better for "dog fooding" to redirect to "dogfood"
