SVG values for the `filter:` are indeed supported broadly but because the svg is itself a kind of program (like a shader in 3d graphics) specific programmatic transforms may behave differently across different browsers depending on what elements they apply to.
#
[artlung]
As far as that fun effect, it may be possible to ape that effect with another obscure semi compatible css trick: `-webkit-box-reflect` https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/Reference/Properties/-webkit-box-reflect plus some other hackery

[artlung] I think he said he's seeing the reflected text, but not the "dithered"-type outline distortion caused by the displacement map. (Zoomed here for effect.)

I don't see the distortion in firefox, and in Chromium it's there but nowhere near as good looking as that screenshot. Fun.

Chromium has quite a few additional SVG filer abilities to Firefox, but that doesn't explain why Kupietz is seeing it in Firefox on macOS (unless that's somehow become Safari under the hood, like on iOS/iPadOS ๐Ÿ˜„)

anyone use emacs for their site? looking to start using emacs and I hear org mode is good, and I see hugo can render that as well alongside my existing markdown
#
[artlung]
what is org mode?
#
Loqi
Org mode is for keeping notes, maintaining todo lists, planning projects, and authoring documents with a fast and effective plain-text system https://indieweb.org/Org_mode
#
[artlung]
bubblybumble org mode has been mentioned a few times as core to working style by a few community members at homebrew events

The other IndieWeb angle here is that it seems like requiring Web sign-in / IndieAuth is enough of a barrier to avoid the tens of thousands it bot accounts problem. Feels like there's a story here
#
[tantek]
Also a way to pushback against all the folks saying "domains should be free" bc the cost of domains is likely what's stopping them from being overwhelmed by bots
#
[tantek]
Or to flip it around to a positive, a way to do "free" domains is for governments to grant each person who has an id card (DL, passport) one free domain with some provisos for changing it like you can change your legal name.

[Murray] Nope, haven't heard anything about Mac Firefox being based on safari ๐Ÿ™‚ The difference is strange, and viscerally disturbing to me on an OCD level... I'd sure like to know what the difference is, but I can't find anything, the few reports seem to go the other way, things that only work in Chrome. I recently had a cross-browser compatibility problem with a WordPress performance plugin, of all things: Firefox was ok with
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
LiteSpeed Cache's javascript optimizations and Chrome wasn't and I didn't know until someone reported a site issue to me. On one page, jQuery, which is required for the core WP audio player, was loading too late and breaking the player, but only on Chrome. So that sort of unpredictable browser variation has come to feel like a bit of a personal bugaboo.
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Wait, sorry, I was unclear, "only work in Chrome" isn't "the other way". Haven't had caffeine yet ๐Ÿ™‚

Heh yeah browser engine diversity is simultaneously the largest asset of the open web and its biggest encumbrance ๐Ÿ˜„

bubbybumble[d] i do use emacs to manage my site, Tramp (for remote file access+editing) and SLIME (basically a repl for Common Lisp) are pretty handy
#
bubbybumble
Oh neat
#
bubbybumble
I'm considering doing my own half-evil mode to remap hjk and l to b n p and f but still require that you hold control like emacs defaults
#
bubbybumble
Ig there's too many collisions I'd have to deal with as a noob tho
#
ulhar4409
as for org mode, i do like the syntax but it's hard to find code that supports it well, outside of emacs
#
[tantek]
[Murray] i'd argue engine diversity debates are short term vs long term for developers. The "encumbrance" or testing/support cost is purely short term
#
ulhar4409
i thought of doing similar keybinds but i should mention C-h in particular is the help key by default
#
[tantek]
The long term advantage of engine diversity is that's the only way you get a long term supported open web. If there were only one browser engine then web standards would be irrelevant and that one engine would break support for web pages just like every bigcorp controlled OS (iOS Android Mac windows) breaks old apps
#
bubbybumble
Heay and isn't c-k delete line? That would be a yikes
#
[tantek]
Is that a UI you support on your website?
#
bubbybumble
I just think the movement keys are weirdly spread out but I get it's senantic
#
ulhar4409
something like that, i don't use that keybind though :P
#
[tantek]
If it's random emacs chat maybe that's better for #indieweb-random ?
#
ulhar4409
oh true
#
[tantek]
Or are people actually impmenting emacs keys as UI on their sites?
#
[tantek]
implementing*
#
ulhar4409
I'm certainly not
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Heh. You know I've got my CLI front end which has sat fallow for a few months... maybe emacs bindings are next....
#
ulhar4409
Some particular keys like Alt-X (or M-x in emacs notation) to open command bar would be tempting to implement but Emacs keys are kind of antique and would conflict with "sane defaults"
#
ulhar4409
C-p for previous line would conflict with default print hotkey
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Truth, but, I've already got websites I use regularly that hijack default keystrokes, and the idea of "sane" and browsing a website through a CLI in a browser aren't exactly simpatico to begin with
#
ulhar4409
If the user configures their browser to do it, at least that's their choice
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Good point. Well, I could make it an option. Already have a lot of configurable settings. See https://michaelkupietz.com/cli.html and type `help` at the prompt. There's a settings section at the bottom, and a lot more settings as easter eggs.
#

Oh, wow. Slack actually renders a screenshot of the page as a preview. Neat. I thought it used image thumbnails, but that page doesn't have one.
