Protomaps looks really interesting. I’m hoping we can have a general mapping/GPS session at DUS.

Not sure I see the advantage over using leafletjs and existing tile formats

[Murray] I am using Micropub with a syndication target.
#
[capjamesg]1
I am using Benji’s https://sparkles.sploot.com as my client.
#
[capjamesg]1
I can check a box to submit a bookmark to IndieNews:
#
[Murray]
Ah nice, yeah that makes sense, make it as easy as possible. This is one of those SSG issues: I often bookmark things and then don't end up rebuilding for ages. So I've never added syndication, because I don't want to flood it (and because most sharing feels time sensitive). Really need to fix that.
#
[capjamesg]1
Yeah. The flow currently is: create post in Sparkles, which creates a request to my Micropub endpoint, which is parsed by the endpoint to create a file with the microformats2 JSON data, which is used to build my site.
#
[capjamesg]1
After my site is built, webmentions are sent for syndication if applicable.
#
[Murray]
So you automatically trigger a build whenever the micropub endpoint is hit? My issue with that is my builds take 1-2 minutes, and during that time the site goes down (another thing I need to fix 😅)
#
[Murray]
Now that I'm off Netlify and don't need to care about build minutes, I should probably just write a cron job to do it every night at some period with low traffic
#
[capjamesg]1
Yep! It takes ~10s for my site to build.
#
[capjamesg]1
I would like to make this shorter but the amount of work to do that is too high right now haha.
#
[Murray]
honestly, given your site's size, that's pretty impressive. I'd be surprised if I had more pages than you do
#
[capjamesg]1
I am using a custom-rolled generator. I might open source the code at some point but I’m not sure I’m ready to maintain it as open source.
#
[capjamesg]1
Following up on the bookmarks discussion from yesterday, the permalink structure is now https://jamesg.blog/2026/03/31/846a21, where the bit at the end is the first six letters of a SHA hash representing parts of the post content. I’m happy to have everything in the same namespace as my posts.

I want to build an art-related Micropub client but I’m not sure what to make yet haha

The Met in NY has a terrific API…
#
[capjamesg]
(and several other museums do too!)
#
[schmarty]
i have hugo compile into a separate folder from where my site is actually hosted. then i use a local `rsync` to copy over changed files. that keeps the site up during compilation.
#
[schmarty]
i also have `rsync` spit out a machine-readable version of the list of changed files, which is used to decide what pages to send webmentions for.
#
[schmarty]
capjamesg: very excited to hear more about your micropub client ideas! i'm still (very) slowly marinating on "Micropubkit" - a PHP micro-framework for banging out micropub clients. it powers all the little clients at https://bayside.pub/ (and some retired ones like Kapowski)

I think my idea is a client that lets you post public domain artworks to make a gallery page on your website.

The Met specifically has various works labelled as CC0 under their Open Access programme.

I've had a few special pages I've wanted to have a quick micropub posting process for. I've thought about (ab)using tags to indicate when I want some special logic but haven't implemented anything.

Anyone have any idea why Bridgy Fed might randomly not syndicate posts? I have several posts, all with
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
`<a class="u-bridgy-fed" href="https://fed.brid.gy/">Fediverse</a>` in the h-entry, and I can't see any rhyme or reason to what got syndicated and what didn't. It seems random.
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
All the microformats stuff is inserted on the server level, so I know it's consistent from post to post.
#
[aciccarello]
Do you have logs of the mention to http://fed.brid.gy? Some web mention receivers provide some feedback or a URL for checking the mention processing. I can't remember if bridgy does that.
#
[aciccarello]
Also, if you log into http://fed.brid.gy you should be able to see a list of activity including posts it saw you post
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
My access to BF's info seems minimal... I have a page at https://fed.brid.gy/web/michaelkupietz.com that shows the posts that have been syndicated, and not much else. Also, I just changed the skipped post's type from a WP custom "blog post" post type to a regular post, and suddenly it syndicated, even though "blog post" posts had previously syndicated.
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Oh, and, apparently, it re-spammed Indienews with another mention, which I'm not crazy about...

[Michael_Kupiet] happy to look if you have an example post that didn't work
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
And apparently BF is redirecting all links from Mastodon posts to my latest syndicated post, regardless of what the link actually is too... oy vey. https://michaelkupietz.com?p=33140 points to the correct post, but https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://michaelkupietz.com?p=33140 points to a different post.
#
[snarfed]
also I think [aciccarello] meant that you can click on the "X minutes/hours ago" links on eg https://fed.brid.gy/web/michaelkupietz.com to see the raw logs from each post
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Ah! Thanks, didn't realize that. Let me have a look.

I noticed it was showing the WP post ID permalinks in Bridgy Fed, which seemed odd, unless maybe your posts are marking those up as the u-url?
#
gRegor
or maybe just loading slowly... browser still trying
#
[snarfed]
yeah down or just consistently slow. [Michael_Kupiet] BF uses a default HTTP fetch timeout of 15s; if your site consistently exceeds that, you'll have a bad time 🤷
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
[gRegorLove] I have to look and refresh my memory but that may very well be... it does use the ?P= links for permalinks in most places.
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
re: slowdown Yes, my server has been doing this lately. Once or twice a day it chokes for a few minutes. Haven't figured out why yet. I think my opcache gets flushed and it's rebuilding my navigation menus. You all happen to be trying to hit it at the exact time it's happening.
#

Eventually got a cloudflare error, 524

[Michael_Kupiet]
[snarfed] basically whenever I'm updating the site, you get a minute or two of slowdowns as the cache flushes and rebuilds everything. The cron job that sends the webmentions runs every 5 minutes... I suppose if I submit a post update at 4 minutes 50 seconds, and the webmention gets sent at 5 minutes, it might still be rebuilding the menu, and if BF tries immediately to fetch the page, it'll time out. So, for the record, BF doesn't
#

retry if it doesn't get a response?

[snarfed] Also, for sure, all posts syndicated to Mastodon have their https://fed.brid.gy/r/ redirecting to the post https://michaelkupietz.com?p=32703instead instead of the correct posts, even though the links in the Mastodon posts contain the correct ?p= IDs. See https://mastodon.social/@michaelkupietz.com@michaelkupietz.com for examples. All links in the same posts syndicated to BSky
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
https://bsky.app/profile/michaelkupietz.com.web.brid.gy are working as expected, and point directly at the correct articles on my site. Do the mastodon posts have to include that http://fed.brid.gy redirect instead of the actual permalink? I looked in the BF logs for the posts that are linking correctly from BSky and incorrectly from Mastodon and don't see any examples of wrong permalinks. Thanks!
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
In case you can't see the Mastodon posts... try https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://michaelkupietz.com?p=33149 or even a nonexistent ID like https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://michaelkupietz.com?p=98765 . They're all redirecting to post 32703. The site itself is handling the ?p= permalinks correctly if you enter them directly.
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Confirmed from both Firefox and Chrome... thought maybe it was a weird browser caching issue but it's not.
#
gRegor
I can answer part of that. yeah, Mastodon requires that the link in the post, it's part of the AP stuff being delegated to that domain
